The experiments on the combination of different ridge and spacing distances of Eshu No.9 were conducted to explore the optimal ridge and spacing distance. The results showed that the yields of different ridge and spacing distance were significantly different. The optimal combination of ridge and spacing distance of Eshu No.9 in Xianning city were 80 cm and21 cm respectively, and the yield could reach 42 828.1 kg / hm2.

We report significant progress in mid-ocean ridge research in China since China joined the InterRidge, an interdisciplinary international science program, as an associate member following the 1st InterRidge workshop in China in October 2003. Two multi-leg expeditions were conducted on the Chinese research vessel “Dayang Yihao” in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Each expedition consists multiple 30-40 day long interdisciplinary legs to investigate ocean ridge hydrothermal vents. The 2005 expedition, which was the first around the world deep sea exploration by China, has surveyed the East Pacific Rise, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Southwest Indian Ridge, and the Central Indian Ridge. On the other hand, the 2007 expedition has investigated the Southeast Indian Ridge, Southwest Indian Ridge, Central Indian Ridge, and the Lau Basin back-arc spreading center.

Fundamental characteristics of tsunamis propagating over an oceanic ridge are investigated analytically based on the linear shallow water wave theory. The oceanic ridge model used has a triangular shape which is formed by the combination of a constant slope and a bottom of uniform depth. Wave pattern of on-ridge tsunamis varies depending on the obliquity of incident waves. Especially, standing waves are formed when the incident wave angle to the ridge exceeds the critical angle. Then no transmitted waves exist because of the evanescent waves. The present study is applied to the 1996 Irian Jaya tsunami which propagated over the South-Honshu ridge. The characteristics of on-ridge tsunamis observed at Chichijima and Hachijojima, which are close to the South-Honshu ridge, can be partly explained by using the solution derived in the present study.

Resistance on a ship penetrating a sea ice ridge is a key design parameter of ice breaking ships. The resistance of a ship in an unconsolidated ridge has been studied by using a three dimensional discrete element method. Ridges of equal depth but different widths were used and it was observed that the ridge width has a major effect on the ridge resistance: the ridge resistance increases with increasing ridge width, until the ridge width is of the same order as the ship length. The ridge resistance was decomposed into a frictional force and a deformation force. The deformation force is due to the ridge deformation by the ship bow and it was shown that the deformation force is related with the mass of ice blocks accelerated by and moving with the ship.

Twenty years after the discovery of the sea-floor hot springs, vast stretches of the global mid-ocean ridge system still remain unexplored for locating hydrothermal vents. In comparison to the mid-oceanic ridge systems of the Pacific and the Atlantic, so far the Indian Ocean Ridge system (IORS) drew less attention from the world researchers towards finding out hydrothermal deposits. But recently several investigations took place in this direction by investigators of about half a dozen countries including India. Among these studies majority were concentrated around the Central Indian Ridge and the Southwest Indian Ridge areas, while a few observations were made around the rest of the areas in the IORS. The findings of these studies are discus sed here.
