The Status, Causes and Control of Desertification in the Ortindag Sandy Land to the North of Beijing
The desertification concept was introduced into China in 1977 when the United Nations Conference on Desertification was held Although much research on it has been done since then, the exact status and causes of desertification are still beyond researchers' understanding Over the past 50 years, the losing rate of land to desertification has been escalating Among the most severe desertified areas is the Ortindag Sandy Land, located in Inner Mongolia plateau and to the north of Beijing, which is a dust and sand source area that threatens Beijing and Tianjin regions It is experiencing severe desertification, whereas there is short of relevant studies on it at present The trend of rapid expansion of desertification was realized through researches on some local areas in this region The desertification status and trends in the whole region of Ortindag Sandy Land, however, are still unclear To date, knowledge about the causes of desertification is no more than a general understanding that irrational human activities such as overgrazing can induce desertification Human production system and land system interlace and interact There is a complex feedback mechanism between them It is vital to reveal the feedback mechanism for the understanding of the causes of desertification and control of desertification Finally, we advocate four key issues and research priorities relevant to desertification of the Ortindag Sandy Land, ie potential ecosystem spatial patterns, desertification trends and monitoring, desertification mechanisms, and land quality and land capacity assessments

Abstract Desertification in north China is ongoing despite the endeavours to mitigate it over the past 50 years. Overall examination of the context of desertification and defects of desertification‐combating programmes is a prerequisite for desertification control, which is now attracting general concern in China. The physiographic circumstances of north China, including the dry, continental, mid‐latitude climate, easily erodible soil surface and water shortage, provide the background to desertification. Climatic aridity and the evolution of land use and land management in recent decades have produced great stress on the land. The ineffectiveness of anti‐desertification measures ascribed to inadequate scientific involvement in decision‐making, neglect of the human dimension and the lack of a well‐organized desertification monitoring system are discussed in this paper. Gansu Province is located in the inner part of Northwest China. Because of natural and man made factors, sandy desertification lands are extensively distributed within the Province. Especially since the recent half century, the sandy desertification land areas have being rapidly expanded. and sandy desertification becomes extensive Ecological environment deteriorates and the social and economic development are seriously restricted. In the light of the cause of sandy desertification extention and the issues in controlling, controllng measures are put forward.

Desertification is encroaching the valuable living space, and endangering the existence and development of humankind, which has been paid much attention by the world. This paper systematically introduces the status quo of combating and controlling desertification in China from the different views of the historical changes of combating and controlling desertification, developing stages, the procedure and status quo of the research and practice, and discusses the technologies of combating and controlling desertification in China in new period when the desertification of China firstly turns to reversion trend, which is to promote the development of combating and controlling desertification of China.

Gansu Province is located in the hinterland of Northwest China. Because of natural and man made factors, sandy desertification lands are extensively distributed within the Province. Especially since the middle 20 Century the sandy desertification land areas have being rapidly expanded, and sandy desertification becomes intensively. Ecological environment deteriorates and the social and economic development is seriously restricted. In the light of the cause of sandy desertification extension and the problem in controlling, some countermeasures are put forward.

Desertification is land degradation, which is composed of sandy desertification, water erosion and salinization. Among of those the sandy desertification is a main process of land degradation in the North of China. Based on brief review of the studies and results on the definition of desertification in China and foreign countries and according to our researches and combating practices on land degradation in the North of China, we think that the sandy desertification is land degradation characterized by wind erosion mainly resulted from the in\|coordination between human impact and natural conditions in the arid, semiarid and some sub\|humid regions. We also discuss the time, space, cause, landscape, trend and disaster during the process of sandy desertification. We distinguish desert and desertified land from formation and evolution in different time\|space, causes, processes and utilization/combating, and note that desert was controlled by climatic changes and human activities should bear the responsibility for sandy desertification.
