Abstract:
Keywords:

The Global Standard Stratotype-section and Point(GSSP) for the base of the newly proposed global Jiangshanian Stage(Cambrian,Furongian) has been ratified recently by the International Union of Geological Sciences. It is defined at the base of a limestone layer 108.12 m above the base of the Huayansi Formation in the Duibian B section that lies about 250 m northwest of Duibian,Jiangshan, western Zhejiang,South China. The GSSP is exposed in natural outcrops at a position 28°48.958'N and 108°36.896'E,coinciding with the FAD of cosmopolitan agnostoid trilobite Agnostotes orientalis(base of the A.orientalis Zone).Secondary global marker is the FAD of cosmopolitan polymerid trilobite Irvingella angustilimbata, which coincides with the FAD of A.orientalis at the GSSP level of the Duibian B section.

The Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Drumian Stage (Cambrian Series 3) is defined at the base of a limestone (calcisiltite) layer 62 m above the base of the Wheeler Formation in the Stratotype Ridge section, Drum Mountains, Utah, USA.The GSSP level contains the lowest occurrence of the cosmopolitan agnostoid trilobite Ptychagnostus atavus (base of the P. atavus Zone).Secondary global markers near the base of the stage include the DICE negative ! 13 C excursion, the onset of a long monotonic 87 Sr/ 86 Sr isotopic shift, and the transgressive phase of a eustatic event.Faunal turnovers close to the base of the Drumian Stage are recognized as the base of the Bolaspidella Zone (polymerid trilobites) in Laurentia, the historic base of the Floran Stage in Australia, the base of the Dorypyge richthofeni Zone (polymerid trilobites) in South China, and the base of the Gapparodus bisulcatus-Westergaardodina brevidens Assemblage-zone (conodonts) in Baltica and South China. The last occurrence of the cosmopolitan trilobite Ptychagnostus gibbus occurs in the lower part of the Drumian Stage, and the base of the Hydrocephalus hicksii Zone (polymerid trilobites) as used in Siberia and Baltica occurs near the base of the stage.

Terfelt, F, Bagnoli, G. & Stouge, S. 2011: Re-evaluation of the conodont Iapetognathus and implications for the base of the Ordovician System GSSP. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 227–237. In 2000, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) ratified the decision from the International Working Group on the Cambrian–Ordovician Boundary (COBWG) to place the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Ordovician System in the Green Point section, Newfoundland, Canada, at a point coinciding with the first appearance of the conodont Iapetognathus fluctivagus. However, a restudy of the conodont successions from Green Point shows that this species is not present at the boundary interval, and as a consequence the section does not fulfil the biostratigraphical requirements of a GSSP. The GSSP horizon as now defined is based on a level part-way through the range of I. preaengensis– a species with lower first appearance datum (FAD). The true FAD of I. fluctivagus is above the FAD of planktonic graptolites and well above the FAD of I. preaengensis. As a consequence of these problems, a restudy of the GSSP section and the other sections in the Cow Head Group is necessary. A redefinition of the GSSP horizon is suggested. The following four alternative horizons have potential as new horizons for the GSSP level: the FAD of Cordylodus intermedius; the FAD of Cordylodus andresi; the FAD of Eoconodontus notchpeakensis; and the FAD of the agnostoid Lotagnostus americanus. □Boundary, Cambrian, conodont, Global boundary Stratotype Section Point, Iapetognathus, Ordovician.

The International Union of Geological Sciences(IUGS)has recently ratified the Global Stan-
dard-stratotype Section and Point(GSSP)for the base of Paibian Stage and Furongian Series proposed by
a Sino-U.S team including Peng shan-chi from Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology
(NIGPAS),L.E.Babcock from the Ohio State University,Columbus,Ohio(OSU),R.A.Robison
from the Kansas University,Lawrence,Kansas,Lin Huanling(NIGPAS),M.N.Rees from the Nevada
University,Las Vegas,Nevada,and M.R.Saltzman(OSU).This is the first intra-Cambrian GSSP for
the Cambrian System, and the Paibian and the Furongian are known respectively as the first formal Stage
and the first formal Series within Cambrian. The stratotype section of Paibian Stage and Furongian Series
is situated near Paibi,a small town in Huayuan County, northwestern Hunan Province,South China. Its
geographic coordinates are latitude 2°23.37.37′N,longitude 109°31.54′E of Greenwich,England. The
Paibi section is approximately 35 km west of the city of jishou along the north side of the Jishou-Huayuan
highway(Chinese National Highway 319),and approximately 35km south of Huayuan. The base of the
Paibian Stage(also the base of the Furongian),is defined at 369.06m above the base of the Huaqiao For-
mation In the Paibi section, corresponding to the First Appearance Datum(FAD)of cosmopolitan agnos-
toid trilobite Glyptagnostus reticulatus(Angelin),which is within a continuous evolutionarg sequence of
Glyptagnostus species.
