Based on the remote sensing investigation and monitoring results of existing glaciers and snowlines in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,this paper deals with the types of geological hazards and their distribution areas in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau caused by the change of existing glaciers and snowlines in the past 30 years.In addition,the formation mechanism of glacial geological hazards is explored preliminarily,and the development trends of geological hazards are predicted.

Basic studies for assessing the impacts of the global warming on the Himalayan cryosphere, 1994-1996
A three-year project has been carried out to obtain basic knowledge for assessing the impact of the recent global warming on the Himalayas, of which many glaciers and permafrost are considered very vulnerable to the warming. The field study was made both in the Nepal Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau from 1994 to 1996 under a collaboration between Japanese, Nepalese and Chinese scientists. It was found that many glaciers in the area were shrinking. Detailed process of individual glacier was also studied, in particular on debris covered glaciers for which the melting process has been poorly understood so far. Many of wood and snow/ice samples have been collected for reconstructing the recent climate change over the area.

The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau holds over 1000 lakes and accounts for roughly 50 % of the total lake area in China.Lakes on the Tibetan Plateau play critical roles in the water cycle and ecological and environment systems of the Plateau.A better understanding of lake variations on the Tibetan is important for evaluating climate change on Tibetan Plateau under global warming.The remote sensing technique is an efficient tool to analyze the status and variations of lakes.This study use topographic maps,aerial photographs,Landsat TM images,and compilations of other relevant data to set up one synthesis method using remote sensing,and uses the method to analyze the changes of the Yamzho and Chencuo lakes on the Plateau from 1970 to 2000.The results show using the method to study the lakes variation from 1970 to 2000 is feasible and all the Yamzho and Chencuo lakes shrunk with 6.78% and 2.6% from 1970 to 2000,but all the Yamzho and Chencuo lakes expanded with 2.92% and 0.78% in the period of 1990~2000.
