    Analysis of topographic and bedrock surface data from 41 sites 23.3 km2 (9 m2) within Midwestern areas glaciated during the Late Wisconsinan identifies an average drift thickness-maximum bedrock relief transition equation for the presence or absence of bedrock surface influences on topographic detail. For sites with average drift thicknesses between 15 and 35 m, the transition occurs when average drift thicknesses exceed 0.5 maximum bedrock relief + 10 m. This equation may provide a practical tool in searching for buried bedrock valleys.

    Glacial landscape forms are inherited by rivers following deglaciation. Hillslopes and valley floors configured by glacial erosion control the distribution of bedrock channels and potential sites for fluvial incision. The importance of ‘stream power’ parameters, channel slope and drainage area (discharge), in controlling the rate of incision is widely accepted, but the rate, timing and mechanisms of incision have yet to be quantified in these settings. The dual controls of glacially conditioned bedrock slopes and sediment supply set two of the key boundary conditions for temporally and spatially dynamic fluvial bedrock incision. Measurement of incision rates in these settings is key to understanding the influence of controls on fluvial erosion, and the role of the process in long-term evolution of deglaciated landscapes. In tectonically-passive, hard-rock terrains, such as the Scottish Highlands, incisional fluvial features such as bedrock channels, gorges and waterfalls are common on glacially carved valley steps. Here we report preliminary data on fluvial incision rates measured with cosmogenic 10Be. Our results confirm a postglacial age of bedrock straths in the NW Scottish Highlands and indicate a vertical incision rate of 0.3 mm/yr into resistant quartzites. Further work will explore erosion mechanisms and rates of incision across the Scottish Highlands, and assess controls on fluvial incision, including the potential role of paraglacial sediment.

    Progress in Chinese fluvial sedimentology, beginning with the initial issue of ACTA SEDIMENTOLOGICA SINICA in 1983, have been reviewed respectively from the aspects of classification of stream, modern present deposits investigation, fluvial facies and depositional models, fluvial deposits sequence stratigraphy, fluvial architecture element analysis and fluvial sedimentological simulation. The great achievements, which have been made in this duration by Chinese fluvial sedimentologists, including the application of the new concepts of anastomosing stream, architecture element analysis, lithofacies and facies assemblages, sedimentary structure research, outcrop investigation, physical and digital simulation of fluvial sedimentology and fluvial sequence stratigraphy, have been concluded in this paper. However, there are no our own new theory which has been known worldwide.To make Chinese fluvial sedimentology front rank in the world fluvial sedimentology, the organization of such research should be reinforced, achievements in geography and hydrology should be absorbed, the domain of the research should be expanded with the demanding of the gradual development of the social economy , international exchange activities should be encouraged positively.
