    Abstract:
As a important subject of pedology, soil micromorphology was setup in 1930s' and solved many questions of pedology. Though soil micromorphology started latter in China, some good study results have been gotten. This paper summarized its development from basic concept ,research method and appliance.

This paper, based on the analyses of various literatures, summarized and reviewed the advances in and prospects of soil micromorphology from the observation method, quantitative measurement of micromorphological unit, describing term and appliance.

For studying the soil micromorphological characteristics under different land use modes, showing the micromorphology indicating significance of land use change, this paper choose loess tableland around Xi'an as a study region. The paper studied the soil micromorphology characteristics on different land uses, found the relation of soil micromorphology and land use, and the accurate interpretation of micromorphology to land use change instructions. So, this study is of importance and relevance significance. The innovation of the thesis are as following: make out the soil micromorphology composite index and access methods, and explore human activities and natural factors effect on the soil micromorphology. And describe the specific characteristics of soil micromorphology in response to land use change.

The history of applying soil micromorphology in archaeology in Russia and abroad is overviewed. The main objectives of soil micromorphological analysis of archaeological objects are specified. The possibilities offered by this method are illustrated by the example of a micromorphological study of a cultural layer of an Early Medieval settlement. The prospects of archaeological soil micromorphology development are outlined.

Soil micromorphology is a discipline to interpret the development of soil based on its microscopic features. There are two advantages of its use in archaeology, one is to analyse the relationship between environmental change and cultural development, the other is to analyse the characteristics of archaeological features and the human activity reflected in it.
The present paper gives a brief introduction to soil micromorphology and its application on agro-ecology and land degradation. It also reviews the progress of soil micromorphology in the past over twenty years. Investigating the interaction between soil and plant roots, the process of land degradation using soil micromorphology, and applying computer image processing techniques for micromorphological quantity analysis will the new trend for the soil micromorphology in the future.
