Recent progress in lithologic description and microfossil dating of onshore basins from around the Caribbean has improved constraints on the age and tectonic setting of major basin-forming periods. The author presents an integrated tectonostratigraphic summary from the northern, western, and southwestern Caribbean and use this framework to interpret seismic profiles in offshore areas lacking wells.

This article attempts to present the geological characteristics and tectonic and sedimentary evolution of Uruguayan basins and the extent to which they have been explored. Uruguay is on the Atlantic coast of South America. The country covers about 318,000 sq km, including offshore and onshore territories corresponding to more than 65% of the various sedimentary basins. Four basins underlie the country: the Norte basin, the Santa Lucia basin, the offshore Punta del Este basin, and the offshore-onshore Pelotas-Merin basin. The Norte basin is a Paleozoic basin while the others are Mesozoic basins. Each basin has been explored to a different extent, as this paper explains.

Marine geological survey of the 1:1 million Yongshujiao Sheet shows the geological characteristics of the shallow, middle and deep levels of the crust below the area. For the shallow level of the crust, the focus is on submarine topography, geomorphology, surface sediments, mineral resources and potential geological hazards; for the middle level of the crust, the study focuses on Cenozoic stratigraphy, fault systems, magrnatic rocks and petroleum-bearing basins; and for the deep level of the crust, the authors focus on the continental blocks, magnetic basement, deep faults and Moho. The following major breskthroughs are made in these studies: ① the stratigraphic characteristics and relationships of various sedimentary basins have been understood through a comparative study of Cenozoic strata, and on that basis, petroleum prospects in this area have been evaluated; ② the solid mineral resources possibly of commercial value have been evaluated based on surface sediment characteristics; and ③ the characteristics of the crust structure have been analyzed by using the data of the magnetic basement and Moho.
