Preliminary Report on the Courtedoux Dinosaur Tracksite from the Kimmeridgian of Switzerland

Abstract:
In 2002 a new dinosaur tracksite was discovered in calcareous laminites of early Late Kimmeridgian age along the future course of the "Transjurane" highway in Courtedoux, Canton Jura, Northern Switzerland. The site has an extraordinary scientific potential, as the laminites, which have been deposited in an intertidal to supratidal environment, contain at least 6 track-bearing levels in a total thickness of about 1 m. The laminites are being systematically excavated by the "Section de paleontologie" over an area of approximately 1500 m2. So far the main track level has been uncovered over an area of about 650 m2, which reveals 2 trackways of theropods and 17 trackways of sauropods. The sauropod tracks are the smallest known in the Kimmeridgian so far, and the trackways belong to the ichnogenus Parabrontopodus, which has been revealed for the first time in Switzerland. The tracksite belongs to the "Middle Kimmeridgian megatracksite" sensu Meyer (2000), and represents the most important dinosaur tracksite in Switzerland, perhaps with the potential for development into one of the world's largest sauropod tracksites. It will be protected in situ underneath an especially constructed highway-bridge, thus offering opportunities for future research and the development of an interpretative center for education and tourism.Keywords:

Sensu
The species diversity of Callithamnion sensu lato in South Africa is re-visited using existing literature, morphology and DNA. The identity of a putative new species is confirmed as distinct using DNA and is described here as Callithamnion africanum sp. nov. Callithamnion africanum differs molecularly and morphologically from a similar species, C. cordatum with which it shares a similar habitat and distribution range in South Africa. Callithamnion africanum is resolved in the Callithamnion sensu stricto clade and is sister to the type species of the genus, Callithamnion corymbosum. Additionally, Callithamnion stuposum, a species described from South Africa and a common component of the seaweed flora, was recovered in the larger, unresolved Callithamnion sensu lato clade. An updated species inventory of Callithamnion sensu lato in South Africa is provided, and indicates a lack of sequence data for the large majority of species. Furthermore, a global rbcL phylogeny highlights a number of taxonomic concerns regarding the classification of taxa circumscribed to Callithamnion sensu lato and calls for a global revision using DNA, type specimens or material collected from near type localities.

The nomenclatural status of the Prepuna province sensu Cabrera (1951) and sensu Morrone (1999) is clarified. The Prepuna province sensu Cabrera (1951) is demoted to a district of the Monte province, stat. nov. The valid name of the Prepuna province sensu Morrone (1999) is Cuyan High Andean province Cabrera, 1971, stat. nov. Diagnoses of these areas are provided and their endemic taxa are listed.
