Our study investigated 12 study sites in four main islands of Tho Chu archipelago in 2019. Six Sargassum species were recorded for the flora of Tho Chu Archipelago, viz.Sargassum aquifolium (Turner) C.Agardh, Sargassum feldmannii Pham-Hoang Ho, Sargassum ilicifolium (Turner) C.Agardh, Sargassum mcclurei Setchell, Sargassum oligocystum Montagne, Sargassum polycystum C.Agardh, among which three species, namely Sargassum oligocystum Montagne, Sargassum feldmannii Pham-Hoang Ho and Sargassum mcclurei Setchell were newly recorded for Vietnam. There was a significant difference in species composition between Tho Chu, Hon Xanh, Hon Tu and Hon Cao islands; among them, Hon Xanh island differed from the other three islands by 28%, Hon Tu island and Tho Chu island were mostly similarity in flora composition with the similarity index of 85.7%. The morphology of some Sargassum species varied by ecological characteristics, especially for Sargassum aquifolium (Turner) C. Agardh and Sargassum oligocystum Montagne.

Coastal social-ecological systems in the Caribbean are affected by pelagic Sargassum spp. influxes and decomposition, but most satellite monitoring efforts focus on offshore waters. We developed a method to detect and spatial-temporally assess sargassum accumulations and their decaying stages along the shoreline and nearshore waters. A multi-predictor Random Forest model combining Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument reflectance bands and several vegetation, seaweed, water, and water quality indices was developed within the online Google Earth Engine platform. The model achieved 97 % overall accuracy and identified both fresh and decomposing sargassum, as well as the Sargassum-brown-tide generated from decomposing sargassum. We identified three hotspots of sargassum accumulation in La Parguera, Puerto Rico and found that sargassum was present every month in at least one of its forms during the entire time series (September 2015–January 2022). This research provides information to understand sargassum impacts and areas where mitigation efforts need to focus.

Abstract Sargassum species form large beds that play an important role in coastal ecosystems. The beds are abundant and Sargassum is often used as food and in Asian medicine in Vietnam. As a base for future use and conservation, we surveyed 14 species of Sargassum at eight locations during April-May of 2018 and 2019. Sargassum species from Vietnam were divisible into northern and southern groups; the northern group comprised Sargassum graminifolium , Sargassum herklotsii , and Sargassum cotoense , which occur in the North and North Central zones. The southern group comprised Sargassum bicorne , Sargassum feldmannii , Sargassum ilicifolium , Sargassum swartzii , and two endemic species, Sargassum phamhoangii and Sargassum quinhonense , which occur in the Central to South West zones. Three species, Sargassum aquifolium , Sargassum oligocystum , and Sargassum polycystum , were widespread along the long coast of Vietnam. This is the first report on distribution patterns of Sargassum species along the long coast of Vietnam. Our study provides baseline data for evaluating ecological disturbance and risks of Sargassum -associated ecosystems.
