Abstract:
Abstract High quality seismic data recently acquired offshore Namibia have revealed the complex interplay between sedimentation and rifting that accompanied the breakup of Gondwanaland. Seismic sequence analysis has demonstrated a complex series of superimposed phases of rifting. Jurassic early-rift sediments were deposited in a Basin & Range setting with marine embayments. Mid- to Late Jurassic extension probably culminated in acidic to intermediate volcanicity. Subsequently, late-rift fill sedimentary accumulations were terminated locally by a major period of plateau-forming effusive activity. This was coincident with the start of Early Cretaceous spreading in the South Atlantic. Shelf, slope and basinal facies are clearly defined in the post-rift succession. Although virtually undrilled, the area is considered to have very considerable petroleum potential. Seismic stratigraphy will continue to play a vital role in defining the critical juxtapositions of source rock, reservoir and seal. Keywords:

Sequence stratigraphy is a very powerful tool for analysis of facies successions. The facies successions are formed by the interaction of tectonic, eustatic, sedimentary and climatic processes. In this paper, we present the examples of the interaction using by our studies in Japanese Islands.Namely, we firstly introduce the depositional sequence model of "EXXON Group", secondary discuss the factors of eustacy, sediment supply and subsidence, then give the new topics of effect on stratigraphy, and finally describe the development in future and problems of sequence stratigraphy.1.

Sequence stratigraphy is based on seismic stratigraphy, log geology, processo-sedimentary, paleozoology, isotope geology and so on It is a synthetical subject which mainly studies relations between relative lithological sequence and circled lithological sequence in chronohorizon formation framework, and provides a new method by which division and correlatioon of sedimentary rock can be done in space We can objectively build up vertical and lateral stack sequence of sedimentary rock with sequence stratigraphy In the paper, the newest recognization about basic principle and controlling factores of sequence stratigraphy is analysed Moreover, the four developing tendencies of sequence stratigraphy are provided

Since the booming of the sequence stratigraphy, there have been a few articles using sequence stratigraphy theory to optimize traditional stratigraphic boundary, but few dealing with about the relationship between the traditional stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. In this article, in view of stratum genesis and geologic history, the authors discuss that the unification of traditional stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy lies on that both of them are the reflection of the sedimentary environment and its change. In certain scale, the changes of the sedimentary environment are in order and synchronous, which leads to the result that both of the traditional stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy are synchronous in variable scale and resolution. The history of geology indicates that it has experienced three phases, from static description phase to dynamic genesis phase, and to mechanism phase. The traditional stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy are respectively in the first and second phase, which indicates the inheritance relationship between the two kinds of stratigraphy. The relationship of the traditional stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy make the integrate stratigraphy method become necessary. The method gives a good solution to the problem of the boundary of the base of the Neogene in Bonan area.

Sequence stratigrphy is evolved from seismic stratigraphy, and has found wide use in petroleum and other sedimentary resources exploration in the world. Currently, there are probably three research groups that are undertaking the sequence stratigraphy study: Exxon group represented by Vail et al., Galloway represen ted by Galloway, and Cross's represented by Cross. They share some terms of sequence stratigraphy, but they have their own conceptual model and study ways for sequence stratigraphy. This paper tries to analyze the origin and the evolution of sequence stratigraphy, and features and predominance of these research groups.
