Based on the precursors' study, the authors explicate the basic concepts of the high-resolution event stratigraphy and its theory basis in this paper. The high-resolution event stratigraphy is divided into four units:unit representing physical events, unit representing chemical events, unit representing biological events and composite events. An example from Global Permian-Triassic Boundary Stratotype Section——the Meishan section,Changxing County,Zhejiang Province,China is taken to discuss the application on the high-resolution event stratigraphy units.

Abstract: This paper briefly summarizes an officially ratified Global Standard Stratotype‐section and Point (GSSP) and a proposed GSSP for global stages of the Cambrian System. The Luoyixi section near Luoyixi town, Guzhang, northwestern Hunan is ratified as the boundary stratotype for the base of the global Guzhangian Stage, which is the upmost stage of an unnamed series termed provisionally as Cambrian Series 3. The GSSP position lies 121.3 m above the base of the Huaqiao Formation in the section, coinciding with the first appearance of the cosmopolitan agnostoid trilobite Lejopyge leavigata . The Duibian B section at Duibian village, Jiangshan, western Zhejiang, is proposed as the boundary stratotype for the base of the proposed global Jiangshanian Stage that is the second stage of the Furongian Series. The proposed GSSP position lies 108.12 m above the base of the Huayansi Formation in the section, coinciding with the first appearance of the cosmopolitan agnostoid trilobite Agnostotes orientalius . This horizon is also with the first appearance of the cosmopolitan polymerid trilobite Irvingella angustilimbata .

Since 1992, the siliciclastic Fortune Head section(southeastern Newfoundland, Canada) and the base of the Trichophycus pedium trace fossil zone have together served as the Precambrian Cambrian(PreC C) boundary global stratotype section and point(GSSP). However, the fact that the Fortune Head section consists mainly of siliciclastic rocks makes it difficult to correlate this section with boundary sections consisting mainly of carbonate rocks, which contain abundant small shelly fossils(SSFs) and can also be correlated using stable carbon isotope data. We propose that a predominantly carbonate section near the town of Dahai, eastern Yunnan Province, southwestern China, be designated a supplementary stratotype for the PreC C boundary GSSP, for the following reasons:(1) the Dahai section is continuous, consisting of the Neoproterozoic Baiyanshao and Daibu members conformably overlain by the Early Cambrian Zhongyicun and Dahai members and Shiyantou Formation; (2) the Early Cambrian units contain abundant SSFs representing four assemblage zones; (3) the Dahai section can be correlated with numerous other sections using stable C isotopic chemostratigraphy; (4) the famous Meishucun section, located not far from Dahai, contains both abundant SSFs and trace fossils and can be readily correlated with the SSF rich Dahai section. We further propose that the base of the Cambrian System be placed at the base of the first SSF assemblage zone(the Anabarites Protohertzina Zone), which in the Dahai section coincides with the base of Bed 11.

Auxiliary boundary stratotypes have unquestionable value in extending the knowledge of a Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) between continents, biogeographic provinces, climatic zones, depositional facies and preservational states. Two kinds of such stratotypes are in use, the Auxiliary Stratotype Point and the Auxiliary Stratotype Section, although only the Auxiliary Stratotype Point is recognised by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS).The Standard Auxiliary Boundary Stratotype, which is based on the Auxiliary Stratotype Section, is proposed here as a formal replacement for the Auxiliary Stratotype Point. As such, it would provide a detailed complementary expression of the boundary interval without the designation of a specific point -no such points can replicate the precise level defined by a GSSP either conceptually or in practice. We recommend that requirements for future Standard Auxiliary Boundary Stratotypes broadly follow ICS guidelines for GSSPs but be applied with greater flexibility.Past practice reveals inconsistency in the protocols used for approving such auxiliary boundary stratotypes. We propose that in future they require approval by the respective ICS subcommission.More than one Standard Auxiliary Boundary Stratotype may support a single GSSP but restraint should be exercised in approving them, and each will always be subordinate to the GSSP itself.
