Note: Measurement method for sound velocity of melts in large volume press and its application to liquid sodium up to 2.0 GPa

Based on large volume press and conventional pulse-echo ultrasonic technique, we have overcome the difficulty in determining the length of liquid specimen under high pressure, and the sound velocity in liquid Na has been measured up to 2 GPa. The P-V data deduced by our sound velocity results through equation of state is in an excellent agreement with previous data directly determined by piezometer method. This new experimental technique is convenient and ready for use, being expected to advance investigation on thermodynamic properties of liquid metals and other melts under high pressure.

Elastic Characteristics of Serpentinite Dehydration at High Pressure and its Significance

Abstract To understand the elastic characteristics during serpentinite dehydration, the ultrasonic velocities of the serpentinite from Shuanggoujie, Yunnan Province, southwest China, were measured at the pressure 1.0GPa and high temperature by the pulse transmission method. During the measurement of the ultrasonic velocity, the waveforms were observed. The ultrasonic velocities of the serpentinite decreased sharply with the increasing temperature as it is higher than 640 °C. At the temperature higher than 700 °C, the experimental sample exploded in the chamber. It was discovered that the amplitude of the ultrasonic wave recorded as the ultrasonic velocity began to decrease was smaller than that before the sample exploded. Comparing the present experiment with the previous experiments, we suggested that the drop of the ultrasonic velocity and the increase of its amplitude are associated with the dehydration of the serpentine in the rock. The phenomenon of the amplitude's increase can not be explained exactly at present. The new discovery of this study may provide a clue for elucidating and predicting distractive changes of the Earth's interior.

High pressure X-ray diffraction study on BaWO₄-II

BaWO4-II has been synthesized at 5 GPa and 610°C. Its high pressure behavior was studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at room temperature up to 17 GPa. BaWO4-II retains its monoclinic structure. Bulk and axial moduli determined by fitting a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state to lattice parameters are: K 0=86.2±1.9 GPa, K 0(a)=56.0±0.9 GPa, K 0(b)=85.3±2.4 GPa, and K 0(c)=146.1±3.2 GPa with a fixed K′=4. Analysis of axial compressible modulus shows that the a-axis is 2.61 times more compressible than the c-axis and 1.71 times more compressible than the b-axis. The beta angle decreases smoothly between room pressure and 17 GPa from 93.78° to 90.90°.

Compressional behavior of strontianite SrCO3 by synchrotron X-ray radiation diffraction: effects of pressure transmitting media

The compressional behavior of strontianite SrCO3 was investigated at ambient temperature and high pressure, using a diamond anvil cell (DAC) with Ne as a pressure transmitting medium. X-ray diffraction patterns were collected to ~52 GPa using in situ angle-dispersive synchrotron-based powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). A phase transition was observed at ~20 GPa, and no indications of further transitions were detected up to ~52 GPa. The pressure-volume (P-V) data within 0.27-17.35 GPa were fitted to a third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state (BM3 EoS) to obtain the elastic coefficients including zero-pressure unit-cell volume, isothermal bulk modulus and its pressure derivative: V0 = 258.4(3) Å3, KT0 = 55(2) GPa, and K'T0 = 4.3(3). The V0 and KT0 were obtained as 258.1(2) Å3 and 57.1(6) GPa, when fixed K'T0 = 4. The axial compressional behavior of strontianite was also investigated by fitting the pressure-lattice parameter data to a parameterized form of the BM3 EoS, and the compression of the a-, b-, and c-axis was strongly anisotropic, with Ka0 = 104(6), Kb0 = 52(12), and Kc0 = 31.6(5) GPa. Based on this and previous studies using different pressure transmitting media (PTM), the effects PTM on the compressional behavior of strontianite were discussed.

A new cubic perovskite in PbGeO3 at high pressures

A new cubic perovskite polymorph of PbGeO3 (Phase II) was synthesized by laser heating in the diamond-anvil cell (DAC) at the pressure of 36 GPa. Fitting the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state against its observed P-V data yields a bulk modulus K0 of 196(6) GPa and the volume V0 of 56.70(13) Å3 when K0′ is assumed being 4. After the pressure is released, the PbGeO3 Phase II changes gradually into an amorphous phase, which contains mainly fourfold-coordinated germanium. It indicates that the PbGeO3 Phase II with a GeO6 octahedron framework transforms to a GeO4 tetrahedron network during the amorphization. The existence of PbGeO3 cubic perovskite Phase II at high pressures indicates that the polarized character of the Pb2+ ion induced by its 6s2 lone pair electrons would be totally reduced in the environment of major silicate perovskites inside the lower mantle, and thus the Pb atom would substitute the Ca atom to enter the CaSiO3 perovskite.

A simple external resistance heating diamond anvil cell and its application for synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction

A simple external heating assemblage allowing diamond anvil cell experiments at pressures up to 34 GPa and temperatures up to 653 K was constructed. This cell can be connected to the synchrotron radiation conveniently. The design and construction of this cell are fully described, as well as its applications for x-ray diffraction. Heating is carried out by using an external-heating system, which is made of NiCr resistance wire, and the temperature was measured by a NiCr-NiSi or PtRh-Pt thermocouple. We showed the performance of the new system by introducing the phase transition study of cinnabar (alpha-HgS) and thermal equation of state study of almandine at high pressure and temperature with this cell.
