The Culprit of Bias for Paleointensity Estimation in the Shaw‐Type Protocol and an Innovative Calculation Method

Abstract Paleointensity records are vital for understanding the Earth's evolution, but obtaining accurate paleointensity is a challenging task. The Shaw‐type method, a widely‐used paleointensity protocol, produces biased results occasionally despite strict selection criteria. By examining the relationships between paleointensities and rock magnetic parameters from a pseudo‐Tsunakawa‐Shaw experiment, we ascertain that changes in the ratio of thermal to anhysteretic remanent magnetization (R) are proportional to bias in paleointensity, especially prominent in samples with hundred‐nanometer‐scale magnetic grains, and thus proved to be the culprit for the bias. Furthermore, we develop a method exploiting the Linear regression of R with Diverse cut‐off coercivity intervals for estimating Shaw‐type paleointensities (LoRD‐Shaw). Combined with a curve fit technique for samples with “folding" phenomenon, the LoRD‐Shaw method yields high‐accuracy results in all tested samples, demonstrating its efficiency in mitigating paleointensity bias from thermal alteration. The new method will enhance acquisition of high‐precision paleointensities for constraining the geodynamo evolution.

Remagnetization of Upper Triassic Limestone From the Central Lhasa Terrane (Tibet): Identification, Mechanisms, and Implications for Diagnosing Secondary Remanent Magnetization in Carbonate Rocks

Abstract Carbonate rocks, widely used for quantifying paleolatitude of the Gondwana‐derived terranes on the Tibetan Plateau and the geodynamic evolution of the Tethyan Oceans, are prone to remagnetization. However, diagnosing such secondary remanent magnetization is difficult and the mistakes have induced confusion in paleogeographic reconstructions. To evaluate if the Upper Triassic limestones of the Duoburi Formation from the Lhasa terrane carry a primary remanence, we report comprehensive rock magnetic, diffuse reflectance spectroscopic, and petrographic results of these rocks. We discover that magnetic carriers vary systematically from magnetite to magnetite plus minor hematite/goethite to hematite/goethite plus minor magnetite with change of rock color and demagnetization behavior of the specimens. Most magnetite and all hematite/goethite grains have clear authigenic origin and were possibly formed during oxidation of early diagenetic pyrite. Such a process was likely assisted by oxic fluid circulation as shown by omnipresent calcite veins within the rocks. These authigenic iron oxides have widely distributed grain sizes with most of them being superparamagnetic at room temperature. Detrital (titano)magnetite is also recognized in some specimens, but its concentration is much lower than that of the authigenic magnetic grains. Based on these results, we conclude that limestone from the Duoburi Formation was remagnetized due to fluid circulation during late diagenesis. We discuss criteria used for diagnosing remagnetization in carbonate rocks, and suggest that a robust evaluation of the remanence origin should integrate field tests, statistics of the remanence direction, rock magnetic properties, and petrographic observations with the limits of each criterion being carefully considered.

Recent Advances in Chinese Archeomagnetism

The geomagnetic field is one of Earth's fundamental properties with a history of ~3.5 Gyr. The field, generated in Earth's core is a window to the deep interior of Earth and may have played a key role in evolution of life on our planet. Materials on Earth's surface that contain magnetic minerals can record information about the geomagnetic field in which they formed. Fired archeological materials (e.g., pottery, brick, and burnt clay) are favorable recorders of the field, and have been widely employed to recover geomagnetic variations over periods of hundreds to thousands of years. The longevity of Chinese civilization and the abundant nature of archeological artifacts make Chinese archeomagnetism a promising source of data. The main work of Chinese archeomagnetism was carried out in the 1980s and 90s, followed by a break of more than a decade; in the 2010s activity resumed. In this paper, we review the development of Chinese archeomagnetism, including a summary of previous work, recent progress, remaining issues and future studies with the aim of promoting an understanding of archeomagnetic work in China and to guide the way for future studies. Here, we compile published data, including some data discovered in old publications that have not yet been included in paleomagnetic databases. We also establish the first, albeit preliminary, archeomagnetic reference curves (with 42 declination / inclination pairs and 76 / 192 archeointensities) for the geomagnetic field in China (ArchInt_China.1a / ArchInt_China.1b, ArchDec_China.1, ArchInc_China.1), which can be used for global comparison of the field and regional archeomagnetic dating.

Rapid drift of the Tethyan Himalaya terrane before two-stage India-Asia collision

The India-Asia collision is an outstanding smoking gun in the study of continental collision dynamics. How and when the continental collision occurred remains a long-standing controversy. Here we present two new paleomagnetic data sets from rocks deposited on the distal part of the Indian passive margin, which indicate that the Tethyan Himalaya terrane was situated at a paleolatitude of ∼19.4°S at ∼75 Ma and moved rapidly northward to reach a paleolatitude of ∼13.7°N at ∼61 Ma. This implies that the Tethyan Himalaya terrane rifted from India after ∼75 Ma, generating the North India Sea. We document a new two-stage continental collision, first at ∼61 Ma between the Lhasa and Tethyan Himalaya terranes, and subsequently at ∼53-48 Ma between the Tethyan Himalaya terrane and India, diachronously closing the North India Sea from west to east. Our scenario matches the history of India-Asia convergence rates and reconciles multiple lines of geologic evidence for the collision.
