Onset and maturation of Asian summer monsoon precipitation reconstructed from intra-annual tree-ring oxygen isotopes from the southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract We present a long-term seasonal tree ring cellulose oxygen isotope (δ 18 O c ) time series created by analyzing four segments (S1, S2, S3, and S4) per year during the period of 1951–2009 from southeastern Tibetan Plateau. This intraseasonal δ 18 O c reveals the onset and mature phase of the summer monsoon precipitation in this region. Analysis indicates that the δ 18 O c of S1 has the strongest correlation with precipitation during the regional monsoon onset (29–33 pentads, May 21–June 10, r = −0.69), and the δ 18 O c values for S2, S3, and S4 correlate strongly with June, July, and August precipitation, respectively. Combined δ 18 O c of S2, S3, and S4 shows the most robust correlation ( r = −0.82) with the mature-phase monsoon precipitation (June-July-August, JJA), passing rigorous statistical tests for calibration and verification in dendroclimatology. These results demonstrate the feasibility in using long-term intraseasonal δ 18 O c to reconstruct the Asian summer monsoon's intraseasonal variations.

Tree‐ring δ¹⁸O evidence for the drought history of eastern Tianshan Mountains, northwest China since 1700 AD

ABSTRACT We developed an annual tree‐ring δ 18 O chronology from Larix sibirica in the eastern Tianshan Mountains of northwestern China. Climatic response revealed that tree‐ring δ 18 O was significantly positively correlated with the mean and maximum July–August temperatures, whereas the July precipitation and relative humidity were significantly negatively correlated with tree‐ring δ 18 O . The self‐calibrating Palmer drought severity index (sc_PDSI) in July–August was significantly correlated with the tree‐ring δ 18 O , which reflects the comprehensive effects of the three parameters on tree‐ring δ 18 O fractionation. We established a robust reconstruction of July–August sc_ PDSI that accounted for 38.4% of the total variance of sc_PDSI from 1959 to 2008. The sc_PDSI reconstruction yields new insights on past drought that were not previously realized in other PDSI reconstructions (e.g. Monsoon Asia Drought Atlas) from the region. The reconstruction revealed several wet and dry periods but no trend towards a wetter climate in the eastern Tianshan Mountains during the last two decades. It also detected synergistic effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation on regional moisture conditions as a result of teleconnections between tropical oceans and mid‐latitude circulation patterns.

Method to measure tree-ring width, density, elemental composition, and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes using one sample

Abstract Tree-ring width (RW), density, elemental composition, and stable carbon and oxygen isotope (δ 13 C, δ 18 O) are widely used as proxies to assess climate change, ecology, and environmental pollution; however, a specific pretreatment has been needed for each proxy. Here, we developed a method by which each proxy can be measured in the same sample. First, the sample is polished for ring width measurement. After obtaining the ring width data, the sample is cut to form a 1-mm-thick wood plate. The sample is then mounted in a vertical sample holder, and gradually scanned by an X-ray beam. Simultaneously, the count rates of the fluorescent photons of elements (for chemical characterization) and a radiographic grayscale image (for wood density) are obtained, i.e. the density and the element content are obtained. Then, cellulose is isolated from the 1-mm wood plate by removal of lignin, and hemicellulose. After producing this cellulose plate, cellulose subsamples are separated by knife under the microscope for inter-annual and intra-annual stable carbon and oxygen isotope (δ 13 C, δ 18 O) analysis. Based on this method, RW, density, elemental composition, δ 13 C, and δ 18 O can be measured from the same sample, which reduces sample amount and treatment time, and is helpful for multi-proxy comparison and combination research.

To reveal the influence of current warming on tree growth and δ 18 O in a sensitive high‐latitude region that is undergoing rapid climate change, we examined tree width and the earlywood and latewood δ 18 O at two sites with a 400‐m elevation difference in the S ygera M ountains of the southeastern T ibetan P lateau. The study period was from 1950 to 2011. The mean tree‐ring index at the low site was higher than that at the high site during the study period. The climatic responses of earlywood and latewood δ 18 O at both sites were similar. Earlywood δ 18 O was mainly influenced by the J une to A ugust temperature and total cloud cover, whereas latewood δ 18 O was mainly controlled by relative humidity from J uly to A ugust. Spatial correlations with CRU TS 3.1 regional data suggest that our δ 18 O chronologies can represent climatic changes over large regions. The high offset between earlywood δ 18 O at the two sites (2.3‰ higher at the low site) was mainly influenced by the high temperature lapse rate as a function of altitude during the earlywood growing season. Furthermore, meltwater with lower δ 18 O values might have affected earlywood δ 18 O at the high site, and thereby increased the earlywood δ 18 O offset between two sites. The low latewood δ 18 O offset between the two sites (0.4‰ higher at the low site) was not significant, but appears to have been primarily influenced by the low precipitation δ 18 O lapse rate as a function of altitude during the latewood growing season. Earlywood δ 18 O of S mith fir suitable for reconstructing past temperatures and latewood δ 18 O suitable for reconstructing past relative humidity on the southeastern T ibetan P lateau were identified.

Increased Variability of Thailand's Chao Phraya River Peak Season Flow and Its Association With ENSO Variability: Evidence From Tree Ring δ ¹⁸ O

Abstract We present a statistically robust reconstruction of Thailand's Chao Phraya River peak season streamflow (CPRPF) that spans the 202 years from 1804 to 2005 CE. Our reconstruction is based on tree ring δ 18 O series derived from three Pinus merkusii sites from Laos and Thailand. The regional δ 18 O index accounts for 57% of the observed variance of CPRPF. Spatial correlation and 21‐year running correlation analyses reveal that CPRPF is greatly influenced by regional precipitation variations associated with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Periods of enhanced and reduced ENSO activity are associated with strong and weak ENSO‐streamflow correlation, respectively. At the longer timescale, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) appears to modulate the ENSO‐streamflow correlations, with the most extreme flood events along the Chao Phraya River occurring during periods of increased frequency of La Niña events that coincide with extended cold phases of the PDO. The CPRPF reconstruction could aid management planning for Thailand's water resources.

Hydrological Extremes in the Upper Yangtze River Over the Past 700 yr Inferred From a Tree Ring δ¹⁸O Record

Abstract Ongoing global warming has a strong influence on regional hydrological cycles. The upper reaches of the Yangtze River (UYR) are highly vulnerable to extreme hydrological droughts and floods, but a lack of long‐term streamflow observations has limited our understanding on global warming influences. Here, we establish an annually resolved and absolutely dated tree‐ring oxygen ( δ 18 O) isotope chronology and use it to reconstruct the summer streamflow history of the UYR between 1260 and 2017. The UYR experienced 79 extreme floods and 107 extreme hydrological droughts over this period. We found a trend toward dry conditions in the region with tendencies for an increased drought probability since around 1850s. Especially, the frequency of hydrological droughts in recent decades has been outside the envelope of natural variability of extreme hydrological droughts. The temporal evolution of hydrological extremes is closely linked to variability of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) at decadal scales. The UYR has experienced more frequent droughts during dry spells and experienced more frequent floods during wet spells of the ISM. The recent increase in the frequency of hydrological droughts is consistent with the observed trend toward a weaker ISM and increasing temperatures. Weaker transport of low‐level moisture and greater evaporation caused by global warming have contributed to the increase in extreme hydrological droughts. Our results thus provide a long‐term context for observed hydrological changes and suggest that the UYR will experience more frequent and severe extreme events as a consequence of increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

A reconstruction of June–July temperature since AD 1383 for Western Sichuan Plateau, China using tree‐ring width

Abstract Global warming has a significant impact on the ecosystem of the high‐altitude areas of the Tibetan Plateau, such as land degradation and the rapid retreat of glaciers. It is important to understand the effects of global warming occurring over hundreds or thousands of years. However, the long‐term reconstruction of temperature is still lacking for the region of Western Sichuan Plateau (WSP). In this study, we reconstructed summer (June–July) temperatures back to 1383 for the WSP region based on a significant positive correlation between the standard chronology and summer temperature. The reconstruction passed statistical tests and explained 55.4% of the climatic variance in the period for which data are available (1962–2005). There have been five periods with warm summers and five with cold summers during the past 623 years. Warm periods occurred in 1383–1445, 1525–1590, 1700–1724, 1825–1870, and 1930–1960, while relatively cold periods occurred in 1446–1524, 1591–1675, 1725–1824, 1900–1929, and 1961–1990. A comparison with observed data and regional temperature reconstruction series shows that the reconstruction has a high degree of consistency and is indicative and reliability. The spatial correlation was analysed with Climatic Research Unit gridded data to detect the spatial representativeness of the reconstruction, confirming that the reconstruction has a strong regional temperature signal for the WSP. Furthermore, ensemble empirical mode decomposition indicates quasi‐oscillations of 2.8–3.3, 6.4–8.3, 11.1–14.2, 25–38.4, 89, and 138 years in the reconstructed temperature time series during the past 623 years. El Niño Southern Oscillation cycles, solar activity, and Atlantic multi‐decadal oscillation may be the primary forcing factors. Meanwhile, the coordinated action of temperature‐induced drought stress with a late growing season related to delayed snowmelt can potentially be attributed to the divergence problem (observed around 2005).
