Re-appearance of precipitated aragonite crystal fans as evidence for expansion of oceanic dissolved inorganic carbon reservoir in the aftermath of the Lomagundi-Jatuli Event

The initial accumulation of atmospheric oxygen is marked by the unprecedented positive δ13Ccarb excursions of the Lomagundi-Jatuli Event (LJE) and records an interval of abnormal O2 production through elevated rates of organic carbon burial. Emerging evidence suggests that the post-LJE atmosphere-ocean system might have suffered a significant deoxygenation. These dynamic perturbations in the oceanic redox state and biogeochemical cycles would have led to fundamental changes in carbonate precipitation dynamics. Here, we report the discovery of centimeter-sized crystal fans in the post-LJE Huaiyincun Formation, Hutuo Supergroup in the North China Craton. The hexagonal cross-sections and square terminations suggest that these fan-like dolomitic structures were originally aragonite crystal fans (ACF). Variations of stromatolite morphology and frequent occurrences of storm-related deposits in the Huaiyincun Formation point to repeated cycles of sea level changes. The bedding-parallel distribution of the ACF and the homogeneous δ13C values of the ACF-bearing dolostones are consistent with a primary depositional origin for the ACF. An updated compilation of published records of ACF throughout geological history highlights a clear absence of ACF from the initiation of the Paleoproterozoic Great Oxidation Event until the end of the LJE, and a global reappearance of ACF in the post-LJE late Paleoproterozoic. We propose that the reappearance of ACF is in agreement with the expansion of the oceanic dissolved inorganic carbon reservoir. At the same time, consumption of dissolved oxygen during the oxidation of organic matter might have been stimulated by ferruginous deep seawater, facilitating the formation of Huiayincun ACF.

Structural evolution and hydrocarbon accumulation of Luxi Depression

Located in the eastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, Luxi Depression covers an area of 760 km{sup 2} and is one of the more than 250 small rifts of Northeast Rift System, the basement of which is Hercynian told belt. The Depression has undergone two Late Jurassic events: rifting and depression. The rifting sedimentation (the main period) may be divided into four stages: in the initial tensional faulting stage (Yixian Age) are accumulated a set of mantle-sourced volcanic rocks; in the fast subsiding stage (Jiufotang Age) the sedimentary system is distributed in belts under the control of boundary faults; in the steep area alluvial fans and near-shore sublacustrine fans are developed; in the gentle area braided deltas are developed; in the central deep area dark mudstones and sublacustrine gravity flows are developed. Meanwhile the rollover structures began to form on the down-thrown walls of the faults and the drape structures are formed on the convex side of the volcanic rocks. The stable subsiding stage (Shahai Age) is mainly a shallow-semi-deep lacustrine system; the rollover structures are generally finished (Fuxin Age). Most of the fill of the re-rising shrinking stage are near-shallow-lake and marsh facies sedimentation. There are five kinds ofmore » oil reservoirs distributed around the oil-generating depressions: rollover anticline, structure-lithology reservoir, updip pinch out, lenticular sandstone, and impermeable sandstone seals. Such reservoir formation models are relatively representative in rift system and can be a model for oil and gas exploration in similar depressions.« less

Gas extraction technology and application of near horizontal high directional drilling

In order to solve the problem of gas accumulation in the upper corner caused by large gas emission due to high mining intensity in the fully mechanized top coal caving face of Wangjialing coal mine, we used numerical simulation method combined with the key stratum layer control theory to study the roof caving trend and development law of inclined mining fissure. Then we analyzed the evolution process of goaf fissure with the advance of the working face and the development height of roof fissure. Finally, we got the best hole layout position and drilling structure of near horizontal high-level directional long drilling. The practice indicates that we achieved nice gas extraction effect by setting near horizontal high-level directional long drilling borehole according to the above research results. The maximum net extraction volume of a single borehole is 2.10 m3/min, the maximum extraction volume fraction is 31.39%, and the total net amount of gas extracted from the four boreholes under construction is 289900 m3. The gas concentration in the upper corner of the working face decreased to 0.46% during extraction, and the problem of gas overrun in the upper corner was effectively solved.
