Transparent Organic and Metal Halide Tandem Scintillators for High-Resolution Dual-Energy X-ray Imaging

Dual-energy X-ray imaging (DEXI) is a cutting-edge technology that provides more detailed material-specific information than the traditional single-energy X-ray imaging strategy. Herein, we designed and fabricated a top-filter-bottom (TFB) sandwich structure scintillator for high-resolution DEXI within a single exposure. More specifically, the low- and high-energy X-ray photons were sequentially absorbed by the top and bottom scintillators and were efficiently converted into their corresponding emission colors. By discriminating between these different emission spectra of the transparent TFB sandwich structure scintillator, DEXI can provide not only unique X-ray energy information but also an exceptional resolution of approximately 18 lp/mm on stacked images that surpasses most of the reported single-layer organic- and metal halide-based scintillators. The conceptual demonstrations of decomposition and reconstruction in DEXI were also realized on several biological imaging objects. This breakthrough research paves the way for the development of scintillator architectures specifically designed for DEXI.

Defect Engineering to Achieve Photostable Wide Bandgap Metal Halide Perovskites

Bandgap tuning is a crucial characteristic of metal-halide perovskites, with benchmark lead-iodide compounds having a bandgap of 1.6 eV. To increase the bandgap up to 2.0 eV, a straightforward strategy is to partially substitute iodide with bromide in so-called mixed-halide lead perovskites. Such compounds are prone, however, to light-induced halide segregation resulting in bandgap instability, which limits their application in tandem solar cells and a variety of optoelectronic devices. Crystallinity improvement and surface passivation strategies can effectively slow down, but not completely stop, such light-induced instability. Here we identify the defects and the intragap electronic states that trigger the material transformation and bandgap shift. Based on such knowledge, we engineer the perovskite band edge energetics by replacing lead with tin and radically deactivate the photoactivity of such defects. This leads to metal halide perovskites with a photostable bandgap over a wide spectral range and associated solar cells with photostable open circuit voltages.

Role of Trapped Carriers Dynamics in Operating Lead Halide Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells

Here we investigate the role of charge trapping/recombination dynamics at halide interstitials, responsible for halide segregation, when wide-band gap perovskites are embodied in solar cells. Such dynamics can be either fast (picoseconds-nanoseconds) or slow (nanoseconds-μs) according to the oxidation state of the halide defect. When carriers accumulate within the perovskite, at open-circuit conditions, the trapping/recombination process having the slowest dynamics causes photo instability predominantly. When the solar cell is under a load, the device performances are mainly affected by the fast carrier trapping, depending on a direct competition between the trapping rate and the charge extraction efficiency. We show that by selectively passivating the defects correlated to fast carrier trappings, the solar cell operation and stability can be largely improved by improving the charge extraction. Thus, a deep knowledge of the chemical nature of defect activities and the corresponding electronic dynamics is crucial for maximizing the performance and stability of wide bandgap perovskite solar cells.

Copper Iodide Inks for High-Resolution X-ray Imaging Screens

Copper-based halide scintillators have attracted considerable interest because of their high light yields, low detection limits, low toxicity, and moderate fabrication conditions. Here, we synthesized two Cu(I) iodide inks, comprising zero-dimensional Cu4I6(L1)2 nanoparticles (L1 = 1-propyl-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-1-ium) and one-dimensional Cu4I6(L2)2 nanorods (L2 = 4-dimethylamino-1-ethylpyridinium) for X-ray imaging application. The Cu4I6(L1)2 nanoparticles and Cu4I6(L2)2 nanorods exhibited broadband green and yellow emission with an ultrahigh photoluminescence quantum yield of 95.3% and 92.2%, respectively. Consequently, the two Cu(I) iodide ink-based X-ray screens exhibited low detection limits of 96.4 and 102.1 nGy s–1, respectively, which are approximately 55 times lower than the dose required for standard medical diagnosis (5.5 μGy s–1). Importantly, both the scintillation screens exhibited extraordinary X-ray imaging resolutions exceeding 30 lp mm–1, more than double those of the conventional CsI:Tl and Ga2O2S:Tb scintillators. This study provides a new avenue for exploring high-resolution X-ray imaging screens on the basis of Cu-based halide ink for medical radiography and nondestructive detection.

Oxygen Vacancy Induced Flat Phonon Mode at FeSe /SrTiO3 interface

Abstract A high-frequency optical phonon mode of SrTiO 3 (STO) was found to assist the high-temperature superconductivity observed recently at the interface between monolayer FeSe and STO substrate. However, the origin of this mode is not clear. Through first-principles calculations, we find that there is a novel polar phonon mode on the surface layers of the STO substrate, which does not exist in the STO crystals. The oxygen vacancies near the FeSe/STO interface drives the dispersion of this phonon mode to be flat and lowers its energy, whereas the charge transfer between STO substrate and FeSe monolayer further reduces its energy to 81 meV. This energy is in good agreement with the experimental value fitted by Lee et al. for the phonon mode responsible for the observed replica band separations and the increased superconducting gap. The oxygen-vacancy-induced flat and polar phonon mode provides clues for understanding the origin of high Tc superconductivity at the FeSe/STO interface.

Photothermal-Catalyzing CO₂ Methanation over Different-Shaped CeO₂-Based Ru Nanoparticles

The Ru/CeO2 samples were prepared with loading Ru nanoparticles onto three different shapes (nanocubes, rods, and polyhedrons) of the CeO2 surface and evaluated for catalytic performances in CO2 methanation under visible light or not. It was found that the cube-like Ru/CeO2 sample (Ru/CeO2-c) exhibited a visible light-enhanced catalytic performance, but an insignificant photopromoted activity occurred on rod- or polyhedron-like Ru/CeO2 samples (Ru/CeO2-r or Ru/CeO2-p). The detailed catalytic mechanism was monitored by temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance. It was proposed that the different photoassist activities of Ru/CeO2 under illumination were caused by the different metal–support interaction forces. The strong interaction formed in Ru/CeO2-c could promote the photoexcited electrons from cube-like CeO2 to transfer onto the Ru surface, which accelerated the generation of oxygen vacancies in Ru/CeO2-c. On the contrary, a weak interaction occurred on Ru/CeO2-r and Ru/CeO2-p samples. In this case, the photoexcited electrons would hardly transfer onto the Ru surface, and no more oxygen vacancies were generated on Ru/CeO2-r and Ru/CeO2-p, resulting in a negligible photopromoted activity.
