Note: Measurement method for sound velocity of melts in large volume press and its application to liquid sodium up to 2.0 GPa

Based on large volume press and conventional pulse-echo ultrasonic technique, we have overcome the difficulty in determining the length of liquid specimen under high pressure, and the sound velocity in liquid Na has been measured up to 2 GPa. The P-V data deduced by our sound velocity results through equation of state is in an excellent agreement with previous data directly determined by piezometer method. This new experimental technique is convenient and ready for use, being expected to advance investigation on thermodynamic properties of liquid metals and other melts under high pressure.

Temperature Coefficient of Sound Velocity of Perovskite-Enstatite and Lateral Thermal Heterogeneity in Earth's Lower Mantle

Using the differences of sound velocity and temperature on the Hugoniot and isoentropic state, the temperature coefficients of sound velocity of perovskite-enstatite under high pressure were obtained. For compressional, shear and bulk wave velocities, their temperature coefficients decrease from 0.386, 0.251, 0.255 m/(s·K) at 40 GPa to 0.197, 0.131, 0.162 m/(s·K) at 140 GPa, respectively. Extrapolating these to zero pressure results in (∂K/∂T)0 = -0.0279 GPa·K-1, which is consistent very well with the value got by hydrostatic pressure experiment. On the basis of our data, we conclude that the compressional wave velocity anomaly of 0.1-0.2% in the deep lower mantle and 2% in the D" region would imply lateral thermal heterogeneity with amplitude of 53-106 K and 1066 K in these regions, respectively.

Elastic Characteristics of Serpentinite Dehydration at High Pressure and its Significance

Abstract To understand the elastic characteristics during serpentinite dehydration, the ultrasonic velocities of the serpentinite from Shuanggoujie, Yunnan Province, southwest China, were measured at the pressure 1.0GPa and high temperature by the pulse transmission method. During the measurement of the ultrasonic velocity, the waveforms were observed. The ultrasonic velocities of the serpentinite decreased sharply with the increasing temperature as it is higher than 640 °C. At the temperature higher than 700 °C, the experimental sample exploded in the chamber. It was discovered that the amplitude of the ultrasonic wave recorded as the ultrasonic velocity began to decrease was smaller than that before the sample exploded. Comparing the present experiment with the previous experiments, we suggested that the drop of the ultrasonic velocity and the increase of its amplitude are associated with the dehydration of the serpentine in the rock. The phenomenon of the amplitude's increase can not be explained exactly at present. The new discovery of this study may provide a clue for elucidating and predicting distractive changes of the Earth's interior.

High-Pressure Sound Velocity of Perovskite-Enstatite and Possible Composition of Earth's Lower Mantle

The compressional sound velocity vp for enstitate of polycrystalline specimens was measured at pressures from 40 to 140 GPa by using the optical analyzer techniques under shock loading. The dependence of vp (in units of km/s) on Hugoniot pressure p (in units of GPa) can be described by: ln vp = 3.079 - 0.691 ln p + 0.094 ln2 p. The vp satisfies Birch's law: vp = 6.213 + 1.212ρ, where ρ is corresponding density, indicating that enstatite is stable throughout the conditions of the lower mantle. Here P wave velocity is 0.5% lower and S wave velocity is 2% higher than those of preliminary reference earth model, respectively. It is concluded that the lower mantle is mainly composed of perovskite-(Mg1-x,Fex)SiO3 and only small amount of (Mg1-x,Fex)O is allowed in it.

Electrical Conductivity Experimental Studies on the Dabie Ultrahigh‐Pressure Eclogites at High Pressures and High Temperatures

Abstract Electrical conductivity is measured for dry and saturated with 1mol/L NaCl eclogites respectively at various pressures and temperatures, which are prevalent in the mid and lower crust. The results show that the electrical conductivity of dry eclogites parallel to the lineation is higher than that perpendicular to the lineation, however the activation energies along both directions are similar. The conductivity of dry eclogites at conditions relevant to the mid and lower crust is several orders of magnitude lower than that of average highly conductive layers (HCL). At room temperature, the conductivity of saturatede clogites is differently dependent on pressure in directions parallel and perpendicular to the lineation. The conductivity of saturated eclogites at mid and lower crust conditions is in the range of values of average HCL. However, the electrical conductivity of eclogites, regardless of dry or saturated conditions, is even much lower than that of Dabieshan HCL at the depths between 20 and 50km beneath the surface, and therefore is not used to explain the genesis of this HCL. Thus eclogites are not the main rock type at such depths in Dabieshan area.

Epitaxial nucleation and lateral growth of high-crystalline black phosphorus films on silicon

Abstract Black phosphorus (BP) is a promising two-dimensional layered semiconductor material for next-generation electronics and optoelectronics, with a thickness-dependent tunable direct bandgap and high carrier mobility. Though great research advantages have been achieved on BP, lateral synthesis of high quality BP films still remains a great challenge. Here, we report the direct growth of large-scale crystalline BP films on insulating silicon substrates by a gas-phase growth strategy with an epitaxial nucleation design and a further lateral growth control. The optimized lateral size of the achieved BP films can reach up to millimeters, with the ability to modulate thickness from a few to hundreds of nanometers. The as-grown BP films exhibit excellent electrical properties, with a field-effect and Hall mobility of over 1200 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and 1400 cm 2 V −1 s −1 at room temperature, respectively, comparable to those exfoliated from BP bulk crystals. Our work opens the door for broad applications with BP in scalable electronic and optoelectronic devices.
