THE UPPER CARBONIFEROUS CONODONT SEQUENCE ACROSS THE MOSCOVIAN-KASIMOVIAN BOUNDARY IN SOUTH CHINA

This paper describes in detail the conodont sequence across the Moscovian-Kasimovian boundary of the Upper Carboniferous in South China. The following conodont zones in descending order are recognized: Streptognathodus gracilis, St. cancellosus, Idiognathodus sagittalis, Swadelina makhlinae-Sw.nodocarinata, Sw. subexcelsa, and Idiognathodus podolskensis zones. Their worldwide biostratigraphic correlation is discussed. Based on the Chinese data and on the correlation of these conodont zones in the world,we believe that the first appearance of Idiognathodus sagittalis as the base of the Kasimovian is the best choice. Idiognathodus sagittalis, Swadelina makhlinae and Sw. subexcelsa are here reported for the first time from China.

NEW DISCOVERY OF CONODONTS FROM THE UPPER ORDOVICIAN PINGLIANG FORMATION OF PINGLIANG, GANSU, CHINA AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE

In addition to the Pygodus anserinus conodont fauna referred to the Atlantic Province, which was formerly found in the Upper Ordovician Pingliang Formation of Pingliang, Gansu, the Belodina compressa, Erismodus quaridactylus, and Plectodina aculeata faunas referred to the American Midcontinent Province were found in the same formation at the same section. The Belodina compressa, Erismodus quadridactylus, Plectodina aculeata, and Pygodus anserinus zones in descending order can be recognized in this section. the Upper three zones can be correlated with the American Midcontinent zones, while the Pygodus anserinus Zone can be correlated with the same zone of the North Atlantic conodont zones. Alternation of the two faunas, the North Atlantic Fauna and North American Midcontinent Fauna do not mean the changes of the conodont fauna provinces. It is caused by the changes of the environments, especialy the changes of the see level. The discovery of the North American conodont zones is important not only for the correlation of conodont zones, but also for the paleogeography and palaeobiogeography.

ORDOVICIAN CONODONT DIVERSIFICATION OF THE LOWER YANGTZE VALLEY

After restudy on the Ordovician conodont taxonomy and ranges of the conodont species published before and our new materials, the conodont stratigraphical ranges in each zone of the Lower Yangtze Valley (especially that of the Nanjing Hills area) are summarized. Five bio-events can be recognized during the Ordovician. The conodont radiation in the studied area reached its acme at the Tremadocian-Floian boundary (Serratognathus diversus Zone), early Dapingian (Baltoniodus triangularis Zone), and Middle-Late Darriwilian (Eoplacognathus suecicus Zone). Besides, the conodont species has experienced a rapid increase during the early Darriwilian (Lenodus antivariabilis Zone) and early Katian (Hamarodus europaeus Zone). The research suggests that the conodont radiation may be related to the local sea-level change.

Abstract Recent reports show Eoplacognathus crassus Chen & Zhang, a previously poorly known Ordovician platform conodont species originally described from China, to be a valuable index fossil that is useful for both local and regional correlations. New information bearing on its occurrence in China forms the basis of a reassessment of the range of this species in terms of graptolite biozones. It occurs in the Pacific Province Acrograptus ellesae Biozone and the Atlantic Province Didymo-graptus artus Biozone, and it appears to have the potential to serve as an important guide fossil for a portion of the lowermost British Llanvirnian Series as well as for an interval in the lower part of the global Darri-wilian Stage. ECOS III A preliminary conodont sequence from Cambrian to Triassic has been recognized in China in recent years, totalling 1 04 conodont lon es or Assemblage lones (Cambrian-9, Ordovician-22, Silurian-9, Devonian-26, Carboniferous-I I , Permian-8, Triassic1 9 ) . Primitive Lower and Middle Cam brian conodonts have been found. Monocostodus sevierensis or Cordylodus intermedius may be selected as a marker for the beginning of the Ordovician. Two endemie conodont lon es in the Lower Silurian have been established . Devonian conodont lones are exactly the same as those in Europe. Polygnathus costatus partitus and Palmatolepis disparilis have been proposed as defining the beginning of the Middle and U pper Devonian, respectively. There are still many gaps in our knowledge of the Carboniferous conodont sequence. The Changhsing Limestone is considered to be the highest horizon of the Permian.
