Solvation Sheath Reorganization by Alkyl Chain Tuning Promises Lean-Electrolyte Li–S Batteries

Sparsely solvating electrolyte (SSE), which can achieve a quasi-solid-phase sulfur reaction path, stands out as a promising strategy to alleviate the dependence on electrolyte usage and construct lean-electrolyte lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Nonetheless, its formation relies upon a high dosage of salt and diluent, thereby leading to increased electrolyte cost. To this end, we herein customize a localized SSE (LSSE) featuring a low ratio of salt-to-solvent and diluent-to-solvent through alkyl chain tuning. A multimodal 2D nuclear magnetic resonance technique is developed to unveil the Li-ion solvation sheath reorganization, which is crucial for studying the coordination and dynamics in liquid electrolytes. LSSE affords an anion-derived solid electrolyte interface and effective restriction of the shuttling effect; hence, our Li–S batteries can sustain a steady operation under 4 μL mgS–1 and 3 mg cm–2. Our work opens a new avenue for advancing SSE design in the pursuit of pragmatic lean-electrolyte Li–S batteries.

Kinetically Favorable Li–S Battery Electrolytes

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries suffer from rampant polysulfide shuttling and sluggish reaction kinetics, which have curtailed sulfur utilization and deteriorated their actual performance. To circumvent these detrimental issues, electrolyte engineering is a reliable strategy to control polysulfide behavior and facilitate reaction kinetics. However, the electrolyte–polysulfide nexus remains elusive, and the electrolyte design principle is far from clear, especially for pragmatic application. In this Review, key approaches to obtain kinetically favorable Li–S battery electrolytes are elucidated from three perspectives: (i) high-donor-number components, (ii) homogeneous catalysts, and (iii) endogenous co-mediators. Particular attention is paid to probing the underlying working mechanism. In addition, reaction kinetics and electrochemical performances are systematically studied, especially highlighting the strategic effectiveness of kinetically favorable Li–S battery electrolytes in lean-electrolyte conditions. This Review aims to offer meaningful guidance for the rational design of kinetically favorable electrolytes to enhance the performance and advance the commercialization of Li–S batteries.

The lithium sulfur battery is regarded as a promising energy solution because of its high energy density. However, the insulating nature and large volumetric expansion of sulfur and the high solubility of polysulfides restrict their practical applications. Here carbon nanotube (CNT)-induced yolk–shell carbon nanopolyhedra, with Co–N-doping, is used as host material for sulfur. The CNTs are used to create a conductive network which interweaves each carbon polyhedron and induces the formation of a yolk–shell structure during the sulfur melt-diffusion process due to the "perforation effect". The CNT-connected Co–N-doped carbon nanopolyhedra containing sulfur yolk–shell structure (S@Co–N–C/CNTs-0.5) can achieve a capacity of 712.2 mAh g–1 at 1675 (1 C) mA g–1 after 300 cycles and 511.8 mAh g–1 at 3350 (2 C) mA g–1. The outstanding performance is attributed to the new paradigm, S@Co–N–C/CNTs-0.5 yolk–shell structure, which creates a conductive network allowing for improved electron transport and convenient electrolyte infiltration, as well as enhanced reaction kinetics for the electrochemical process synchronously. The significant internal void space of yolk–shell structure effectively accommodates the volume expansion of sulfur. Simultaneously, Co–N-doping in yolk–shell structure carbon polyhedra can synergistically trap polysulfides due to the strong chemical adsorption.
