Investigation of Shale Permeability Evolution considering Bivalued Effective Stress Coefficients for CO2 Injection

Because of the existence of multiscale pores from nano- to macroscale, a multimechanistic shale gas flow process involving the Darcy and Knudsen flows occurs during gas shale well depletion. The respective contribution of the Darcy and Knudsen flows to the permeability is constantly changing with pressure evolution. In this study, laboratory measurements of shale permeability with CO2 injections were carried out under hydrostatic conditions, using the transient pulse-decay method. The “U”-shape permeability curve resulted in both positive and negative effective stress coefficients (Biot’s coefficient)

. A permeability turning point was thus created to partition permeability curves into the Darcy and Knudsen sections. The Knudsen effect was proven to be significant at low pressure/late time in the laboratory. Effective stress and sorption-induced deformation have been found to govern the Darcy permeability evolution under the tested experimental conditions. Thus, negative effective stress coefficients, together with the positive ones, should be applied to a nonmonotonic pressure-permeability evolution to explain the concurrent effect of the Darcy flow and Knudsen flow at different pore pressures.

Study on the law of surface subsidence in layered mining of thick coal seam with medium hard roof

In this study, the change law of the surface subsidence coefficient under the condition of thick coal seam layered mining was investigated. The study is based on the measured subsidence data of the 1210-working face of the Mengba mine surface mobile observation station after the first- and second-layer mining. UDEC numerical simulation software was used to simulate the variation of surface subsidence coefficient after the first, second, third, fourth, fifth-, and sixth-layer mining when the thickness of slicing mining is 5 m. The maximum relative error between the simulated result and the measured result of the subsidence coefficient q is 2.7%, which further verifies the correctness of the established model. Moreover, the simulation results show that with the increase of the cumulative mining thickness, the subsidence coefficient q of the surface presents a segmented characteristic. When the cumulative mining thickness does not reach 25 m, the subsidence coefficient of the surface gradually increases with the increase of the mining thickness. On the other hand, when the cumulative mining thickness reaches 25 m, the subsidence coefficient of the surface will tend to a constant value and no longer change with the increase of the mining thickness. Finally, the calculation formula between the surface subsidence coefficient and the cumulative mining thickness of layered mining under the condition of medium hard roof is fitted, which provides a parameter basis for coal seam mining with similar geological conditions.

Changes in pore structure of coal caused by coal-to-gas bioconversion

Abstarct Microbial enhanced coalbed methane (ME-CBM) recovery is critically examined as a viable technology for natural gas recovery from coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs. Since the majority of gas-in-place (GIP) is stored as an adsorbed phase in fine pores of coal matrix, the nano-pore structure directly influences gas storage and transport properties. Only limited studies have quantified the alteration of the nano-pore structure due to ME-CBM treatment. This study examines the evolution of the pore structure using a combination of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), low-pressure N 2 and CO 2 adsorption (LPGA) and high-pressure methane adsorption methods. The results show that the surface fractal dimension decreases for the two bioconverted coals compared to the untreated coal. After bio-treatment, the mesopore surface area and pore volume decrease with the average pore diameter increases, while the micropore surface area increases with pore volume decreases. Both inaccessible meso-/micropore size distributions decrease after bioconversion, while the accessible micropore size distribution increases, making a portion of closed micropore network accessible. In addition, the methane adsorption capacities increase after bio-treatment, which is confirmed by the increase of micropore surface area. A conceptual physical model of methanogenesis is proposed based on the evolution of the pore structure.

Anisotropy characteristics of coal shrinkage/swelling and its impact on coal permeability evolution with CO₂ injection

Abstract Coal deforms with gas depletion during coal bed methane (CBM) primary recovery and CO 2 storage for purposes of sequestration or enhanced recovery. The sorption‐induced deformation associated with gas adsorption and desorption has been experimentally and theoretically studied and is considered to be a unique feature of coal. The results of a series of experimental measurements of coal deformation with gas injection and depletion using helium, methane, CO 2 , and various mixtures of methane and CO 2 revealed that the coal sorption‐induced deformation exhibits anisotropy, with larger deformation in direction perpendicular to bedding than those parallel to the bedding planes. Furthermore, the deformation of coal is reversible for helium and methane with injection/depletion, but not for CO 2 . Aiming at improving the understanding of enhanced CBM process, a coal deformation experimental study on methane displacement with CO 2 was performed as well, where incremental swelling was measured for each CO 2 displacement step. The total induced swelling strain (1.68%) with CO 2 saturation was less than that for pure CO 2 injection‐induced strain (1.87%) at same pressure of 5.9 MPa (850 psi). The measured deformation with CO 2 injection was applied to a constant‐volume based analytical coal permeability model, which is capable of accommodating the anisotropic sorption‐induced deformation. Based on the modeling results, it was found that application of isotropic deformation in permeability model can overestimate the permeability loss compared to anisotropic deformation. This demonstrates that the anisotropic coal deformation should be considered to predict the permeability behavior of CBM as well as CO 2 sequestration/ECBM projects. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
