Spatio-Temporal Evolution and Driving Mechanism of Green Innovation in China

Sustainable development has become a global consensus, and green innovation is the key to promoting transition to sustainable development. The study on green innovation contributes to develop and implement green innovation policies. This paper investigates the spatio-temporal characteristics and driving mechanism of green innovation 2009–2019 in China from the perspective of economic geography based on a variety of methods such as GIS tools and Geodetector, in two dimensions of green innovation power (GIP) and green innovation growth ability (GIGA). The findings show that (1) The GIP and GIGA in China continue to increase, with obvious decreasing gradient characteristics from eastern to central and western China, extreme polarization, and obvious spatial aggregation, and the high-value regions show a change from coastal and riverine distribution to coastal distribution, with Shandong and Yangtze River Delta as the centers of high-value regions. (2) The power of the 18 driving factors on green innovation varies widely across time, and the 7 factors such as green area in urban completed area and investment in urban environmental infrastructure facilities are super interaction factors. Besides, the 5 variables of innovation input, foreign connection, economic environment, market environment and environmental regulation have different driving forces on green innovation, suggesting that the driving mechanism has changed in different periods. (3) Core factors of GIP were identified as R&D intramural expenditure and R&D personnel equivalent; important factors were identified as 5 factors such as R&D intramural expenditure in high-tech industry and FDI. Core factors of GIGA were identified as R&D intramural expenditure and added value of financial industry; important factors were identified as 4 factors such as R&D intramural expenditure in high-tech industry and GDP. (4) The 31 provinces in China were classified into 4 types of policy areas by BCG model, and proper policy suggestions were put forward. The research methods and conclusions of this paper can provide reference for green innovation policy optimization in China and other countries under similar conditions.

Neutralization epitope responsible for the hepatitis B virus subtype-specific protection in chimpanzees

Neutralizing monoclonal antibody (BX-182) directed against the d determinant of hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen protected chimpanzees from infection by HBV subtype adw but not by subtype ayw, as demonstrated by intravenously inoculating a mixture of the antibody with the respective subtype of the virus. To elucidate the mechanism underlying the subtype-specific protection, a combinatorial approach of screening random peptide phage libraries, bioinformatics, and structure analysis was used in this study to identify the neutralization epitope responsible for the observed protection. The epitope was mapped at the N terminus of the pre-S1 region of the hepatitis B surface antigen between residues 17 and 21, of which the residues Val-18/Pro-19 were critical for antibody binding. Alignment of amino acid sequences derived from diverse genetic variants of HBV revealed that the epitope was present in ad subtypes and in their corresponding genotypes A, B, C, F, and H. By contrast, this epitope was not found in a majority of ay subtypes or in genotypes D, E, and G, where the antigenic residues Val-18/Pro-19 within the epitope were replaced by Thr/Ser, Thr/Thr, or Ala/Ser, respectively, resulting in a drastic conformational change of the epitope. These data indicate that, by binding discriminately to the subtype "d" epitope in the pre-S1 region, neutralizing antibody BX-182 protects chimpanzees from HBV infection in a subtype-specific manner, suggesting a potential escape mechanism for HBV genetic variants.

Research on the mechanism of information infrastructure affecting industrial structure upgrading

Abstract The construction of information infrastructure as well as the transformation and upgrading of the industrial structure are among the major challenges for the Chinese economy. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore how information infrastructure affects the upgrading of industrial structure. Based on the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2013 to 2020, mediating effect model and non-parametric percentile bootstrap method are used to carry out empirical research, by creating an information infrastructure construction level and industrial structure upgrading indicators. The results show that, in addition to the direct effect of information infrastructure on industrial structure upgrading, information infrastructure can also work indirectly through three paths: (1) information infrastructure acts on industrial structure upgrading by enhancing urbanization level; (2) information infrastructure affects industrial structure upgrading by boosting technological innovation; (3) information infrastructure first enhances urbanization level, then acts on technological innovation, and finally promotes industrial structure upgrading. In addition, the intermediary effect of technological innovation is stronger than urbanization. In general, this study acknowledges that urbanization and technological innovation are partial mediators in the process of information infrastructure affecting industrial structure upgrading, notwithstanding other potential impact pathways being studied further.

Factors Affecting Runoff and Sediment Load Changes in the Wuding River Basin from 1960 to 2020

To investigate changes in runoff and sediment load in the Wuding River basin under the combined influence of climate change and human activities, trends were analyzed from 1960 to 2020, and the contribution rate of climate change and human activities was calculated. It was observed that the runoff and sediment load Mann–Kendall test value ranges at eight gauging stations were −7.42 to −3.88 and −9.28 to −3.34, respectively, indicating a significant decreasing trend in both. During the period of 1970–2000, the contribution of human activities to the reduction in runoff and sediment load was 69.9% and 75.3%, respectively. However, the impact of human activities intensified after 2001 due to the implementation of the policy of returning farmland to forests in the Wuding River basin, which contributed to 118.4% and 114.5% of the reduction in runoff and sediment load, respectively. Check dam and reservoir construction, reforestation, water diversion, and other human activities were all important factors in runoff and sediment load reduction. In particular, the total sediment retention by reservoirs in the Wuding River basin was approximately 879 million tons until 2010, and the total sediment retention by check dams was approximately 2747 million t until 2017. This study can provide support for the utilization of water resources and the construction of ecological civilization in the Wuding River basin, and can also provide a reference for the study of water and sediment changes in other basins.
