SEM morphological study on carapace of Cyclestheria hislopi and comparison with fossil taxa

The circum-tropically distributed cryptic extant clam shrimp species Cyclestheria hislopi (Baird, 1859) is thought to be the only species of Cyclestherida, although molecular data show that its populations on different continents have large genetic distance (Schwentner et al., 2013). Its parthenogenetical reproduction and direct ovoviviparous development in the dorsal brood chamber indicate that C. hislopi is the sister taxon of all Cladocera (Olsen et al., 1996; Olsen, 1999; Olesen & Richter, 2013; Schwentner et al., 2018). While the large carapace, capable of enclosing the whole body, shows a close similarity with spinicaudatans. In this paper we document its carapace ornamentation by the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and compare to related fossil taxa.

Evaluation of Cretaceous Hinterland Weathering and Climate in the Sichuan Basin, SW China

Cretaceous is characterized by high atmospheric CO2 concentration and a resultantly high temperature. Thus, the Earth system, which operated during the greenhouse condition, can be deduced by the investigation of the paleoclimate during the Cretaceous. However, information of paleoclimate from continental inland-basins is scarce compared to that from continental margin marine-basins. In this research, the changes of weathering condition through the whole Cretaceous Period were reconstructed by analyzing the whole-rock chemical composition and clay mineral composition of mudstone samples collected in the Sichuan Basin, SW China. The reconstructed paleoweathering intensity positively correlates with paleotemperature estimate, indicating that Cenomanian-Turonian stages were climatic optimum in the Sichuan Basin as well. Furthermore, the result suggests a Cenomanian-Turonian extremely high amplitude humidity fluctuation.

Abstract We welcome any new interpretation or alternative hypothesis regarding the taxonomic affinity of the enigmatic Oculudentavis khaungraae . However, here we demonstrate that Li et al. have failed to provide conclusive evidence for the reidentification of HPG-15-3 as a squamate. We analyse this specimen in a matrix that includes a broad sample of diapsid reptiles and resolve support for this identification only when no avian taxa are included. Regardless of whether this peculiar skull belongs to a tiny bird or to a bizarre new group of lizards, the holotype of Oculudentavis khaungraae is a very interesting and unusual specimen, the discovery of which represents an important contribution to palaeontology. Its discovery documents a potential new case of convergent evolution in reptiles, while highlighting the importance of amber deposits for documenting taxa not recorded in sedimentary deposits.
