Synergistic use of MOMS-01 and LANDSAT TM data

Abstract Imagery covering the Socompa volcano and debris avalanche deposit in northern Chile was acquired by MOMS-01 when the Sun was low in the western sky. Illumination from the west shows many important topographic features to advantage. These are inconspicuous or indistinguishable on LANDSAT TM images acquired at higher solar elevation. The effective spatial resolution of MOMS-01 is similar to that of the TM and its capacity for spectral discrimination is less. A technique has been developed to combine the multispectral information offered by TM with the topographic detail visible on MOMS-01 imagery recorded at a time of low solar elevation.

En base a evidencias morfologicas, se interpretan los depositos de nube ardiente del volcan Tata Sabaya (oeste de Bolivia), como depositos de una gran avalancha volcanica de detritos, similar a la ocurrida en el volcan Saint Helens (noroeste de EE.UU.), en Mayo de 1980. Los bloques con diaclasamiento prismatico y los depositos de pomez descritos por Deruelle y Brousse (1984), son evidencias de actividad magmatica, pero las relaciones estratigraficas entre estos depositos y aquellos de la avalancha de detritos no son claras.

Frequent earthquakes north of the Yangtse river prompted the Chinese to speculate about the Earth's interior in the 1st century AD. Although they attributed such events to an imbalance between Yin and Yang, these early geophysicists also developed the first instrument to measure the seismic waves produced by earthquakes.

Spectroscopic observation of HCl degassing from Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat

Open‐path Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic techniques were employed to study gas emissions from Soufriere Hills volcano in July–August 1996. Observations were made using both volcanic and artificial sources of infrared energy. Column amounts of HCl fall in the range 1–100 ppmv m but other species expected in the gas phase, notably SO 2 , are not apparent in the spectra. The minimum detection limit for SO 2 in these data indicates that the HCl/SO 2 molecular ratio exceeded 10. Scaled against measured fluxes of SO 2 , the HCl emission rate during this period exceeded 15 kg s −1 (1300 t d −1 ). Comparison of our results with other geochemical measurements of Soufriere Hills emissions is complicated by inherent differences between the analytical methods employed. While the ability to measure atmospheric concentrations of reactive trace gases at high temporal resolution is of clear use in environmental and medical studies of volcanic effluents, a better understanding of the kinetics of plume chemistry is needed to resolve ambiguities in interpretation of time‐series FTIR observations.

The Cerro Purico Shield Complex, North Chile

Cerro Purico is a 1.3 Ma old ignimbrite shield volcano. The first erupted unit was the rhyolitic Toconao ignimbrite (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7100), followed after an erosional interval by the dacitic Purico ignimbrite with the same radiometric age (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7085). Andesitic to dacitic lavas and extrusive domes were later emplaced in the summit region. The upper part of the Purico ignimbrite contains banded and mafic (andesitic) pumices isotopically indistinguishable from the host. The youngest dome (Chascon) contains basaltic xenoliths characterized by Sr isotope ratios (0.7059) lower than the host dacite (0.7073). While the major and trace element chemistry of the suite is unexceptional, a complex magmatic history is required to explain the origin of mafic pumice clasts and isotopically contrasted mafic xenoliths. Simple crustal anatexis cannot account for the range of compositions observed.
