Columbite-tantalite minerals from Nanping granitic pegmatites, South China: compositional trends and genetic implications

The No31 pegmatite group is the largest pegmatite cluster of the Nanping pegmatite field and represents one of the most important Ta-Nb deposits in China. The columbite-tantalite occurring in No31 pegmatites showed faint oscillatory zonation and complex patchy zonation patterns in back-scattered electron images. Microprobe analyses revealed that columbite-tantalite in the pegmatites has a wide range of composition. Neither Mn/(Mn + Fe) nor Ta/(Ta + Nb) atomic ratio has obvious trend of compositional variation along the profile of a single pegmatite dike. However, in the quadrilateral diagrams the compositional trend in columbite-tantalite varies front ferrocolumbite to tantocolumbite, then to manganotantalite. The features of zonation and composition in columbite-tantalite imply that the formation of Nanping pegmatites underwent original differentiation stage and later metasomatism stage.

Geochemistry and origin of metal, olivine clasts, and matrix in the Dong Ujimqin Qi mesosiderite

Abstract— The Dong Ujimqin Qi mesosiderite is the first recorded fall of a stony‐iron meteorite in China. According to silicate textures and metal composition, this meteorite is classified as a member of subgroup IB. Instrumental neutron activation analyses (INAA) of metals show that the matrix metal has lower concentrations of Os, Ir, Re, and Pt, but higher concentrations of Ni and Au than the 7.5 cm metal nodule present in the meteorite. We attribute these compositional differences to fractional crystallization of molten metal. Studies of olivine clasts show that FeO contents are uniform in individual olivine crystals but are variable for different olivine clasts. Although concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) change within olivine clasts, they all exhibit a vee‐shaped pattern relative to CI chondrites. The relatively high concentrations of REEs in olivine and the shape of REE patterns require a liquid high in REEs and especially in light REEs. As such a liquid was absent from the region where basaltic and gabbroic clasts formed, mesosiderite olivine must have formed in a part of the differentiated asteroid that is different from the location where other mesosiderite silicate clasts formed.

REE Daughter Minerals Trapped in Fluid Inclusions in the Giant Bayan Obo REE-Nb-Fe Deposit, Inner Mongolia, China

The Bayan Obo REE-Nb-Fe deposit hosts the world's largest known REE resource. The deposit consists of replacement bodies hosted in dolomite marble and of magnetite, REE fluorocarbonates, fluorite aegirine, amphibole, calcite, and barite. Three types of fluid inclusions have been recognized: two-phase aqueous liquid-vapor (L-V), two- to three-phase CO2 (C), and three-phase liquid-vapor-solid (L-V-S) inclusions. Microthermometry measurements indicate that the carbonic phase in C inclusions is nearly pure CO2. During heating experiments, hexagonal or irregular-shaped daughter minerals in L-V-S inclusions complete dissolution at temperatures of 420-480°C and recrystallize again at about 400-320°C. These show that daughter minerals in multiphase inclusions in mineralizing veins were crystallized from trapped fluids, and are real daughter minerals. REE-carbonates, halite, sylvite, barite, calcite, and pyroxene (?) have been identified on the basis of crystal habit (microscopic and SEM) and EDX analysis. By comparison with Raman spectra of reference REE-carbonate mineral crystals, hexagonal or irregular-shaped daughter minerals in L-V-S inclusions might be cebaite and bastnaesite. The presence of REE-carbonates as an abundant solid in the ore-forming veins shows that the original oreforming fluids were very rich in REE, and therefore had the potential to produce economic REE ores at Bayan Obo.

Geochemical Characteristics of a Carbonatite Dyke Rich in Rare Earths from Bayan Obo, China

The whole-rock geochemistry of a rare earths rich carhonatite dykes that locates at Dulahala and lies 3 km north-east to the East Ore body of the giant Bayan Obo RE-Nb-Fe deposit was analysed. The dyke cuts cross HI coarse quartz sandstone and H2 fine quartzite of the Proterozoic Bayan Obo group. RE content in the dyke varies greatly up to 20% (mass fraction), which comprises rich RE ores. Light RE in carbonatites are extredmely en carbonatite and strongly fractionated relative to heavy RE, hut no Eu anomaly. The carbonatite may be produced by mechanisms as follows: the carbonatite magma is directly formed by very low degree(F1%) partial meltding of enriched lithospheric mantle, leaving residual minerals characterized by abundant garnet; then the magma arises into a chamber within the crust where they will undergo fractional crystallization, which makes RE further concentrated in carbonatite. The RE patterns and spider diagrams of the carbonatite are identical to those fine-grained dolomite marble that is the ore-host rock for the Bayan Obo deposit. However, the carbonatite is calcic, which is different from the fine-dgrained dodlomite marble in major element geochemistry. The difference is suggested to be resulted from that the carbonatite dyke is not affected by a large scale dolomitization, while the fine-grained dolomite marble might be the product of dolomitized carbonatite intrusive body that might set up a hydrothermal system in the region, which transported Mg from the Bayan Obo sediments, especially form the shales to the carbonatite intrusion.
