Garnrnaruslawrencianus is classed as a genuine brackish-water species on the basis of the survival of juveniles, developing eggs and of reproducing adult females.This 1s consistent with its estuarine distribution in the northwestern Atlantic.At low salinities G. lawrencianus produced larger and fewer eggs but a total brood volume equivalent to that produced at higher salinities.Young hatched from the larger eggs at low salinities equalled in length those hatched from smaller eggs produced at higher salinities.

Anonyx amphipods feed extensively on dead or weakened animals, often of large size. They cut off strips of food using the wide incisor processes of their mandibles like a pair of shears. The mandibles and associated mouthparts are specialized for this shearing action. The strips of food are coiled and packed into their proventriculi.

Seasonal changes in abundance of Gammarus oceanicus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) in Newfoundland

Abundance of Gammarus oceanicus reaches a peak in late summer – early autumn and declines to a low in the spring just before the young are produced. G. oceanicus disappears from the upper beach in late autumn, but is found permanently at lower levels. At low tide the numbers found under stones vary directly with stone size and inversely with the level of the stone on the beach. This, in turn, is related to environmental temperature. In the microhabitat under the stones, temperature varies inversely with stone size and directly with the level on the beach.

Gammarus obtusatus is found on rocky, moderately exposed shores from the Gulf of Maine to northeastern Newfoundland. A population at St. Philips, Conception Bay, Nfld., was studied from 1964 to 1965 and one at St. Andrews, Bay of Fundy, N.B., intermittently. Fifty percent maturity of the females occurs at 7.5 mm. Mature females produce a succession of broods between November and September, at which time they enter the resting stage. The November brood is released the next May. Fecundity increases with the size of the female. Individuals survive at the most for 1 year. The males are larger than the females.

The genus Anonyx (Crustacea, Amphipoda) in the North Pacific and Arctic oceans: Anonyx laticoxae group

Thirteen species of the Anonyx laticoxae group (uropod 2 with the rami not broadened and with the inner ramus not constricted) are listed for the North Pacific region. Five new species, Anonyx schefferi, Anonyx stegnegeri, Anonyx gurjanovai, Anonyx hurleyi, and Anonyx petersoni are described. Anonyx japonicus is synonymized with Anonyx affinis, and Anonyx lebedi and A. orientalis are raised to full species. Eleven of these species are known only from the North Pacific region. Anonyx laticoxae and Anonyx affinis are the only two that are also found in the North Atlantic region.

Some aspects of the biology of Calliopius laeviusculus (Krøyer) (Crustacea, Amphipoda) in the northwestern Atlantic

Calliopius laeviusculus is an amphiboreal species found on rocky shores in the western Atlantic from Hudson Bay south to Long Island Sound. Fifty percent of the females were calculated to be mature at 5.6 and 6.7 mm in the summer and winter respectively in Newfoundland waters, but, in Labrador, maturity was not achieved in females up to 10 mm in length. In Newfoundland several generations are produced per year and the females may have more than one brood. However, the females are in the resting stage between August and November–December and young are only released from spring until late summer. The overwintering animals are larger than those found in the summer and the population reaches a peak in late summer. In Labrador, where only one generation is produced per year, young are released in the spring but probably do not reach maturity until the autumn. In Newfoundland fecundity does not vary seasonally.

Gammarus tigrinus is an endemic estuarine species of the northwestern Atlantic found from the St. Lawrence estuary south to Florida. At St. Andrews, N.B., 50% maturity occurs at 6.1 mm in the female. Females produce a series of broods between April and September at which time they enter the resting stage. The oogonia begin to enlarge in February, but are not fertilized until April. The young hatched in the spring probably enter the resting stage in late summer before producing the first brood. The older generation disappears in the summer and the life cycle is annual.

Gammarus finmarchicus is an amphi-Atlantic species. In the western Atlantic it is found from the island of St. Pierre south to Long Island Sound. At St. Andrews, New Brunswick, 50% maturity occurs at 10.5 mm in the females. Reproduction is in progress throughout the year, but small females evidently are in a resting condition during September–October before breeding. The release of young by the population is greater in the spring, summer, and early autumn than it is in late autumn and winter. The young released in the spring and summer do not reproduce until the next year so that the life cycle is annual.
