REVIEW OF RECENT ADVANCES ON STUDY OF MESOZOIC MAMMALS IN CHINA

Twenty-six named species of 23 genera have been known in China from the deposits ranging from the Early Jurassic to Late Cretaceous. Except a few taxa, most of recently discovered Mesozoic mammals in China are represented by well-preserved skulls and skeletons. They have greatly improved our knowledge of the relationships of the major mammalian lineages and the character transition during the evolution of early mammals. Some localities of the Jehol Biota produced most Mesozoic mammal fossils in the past several years. These fossils represent different major groups and show high diversity in body size, locomotory adaptation, and dietary. Such diversification ensures them to occupy different niches in the common ecosystem. Frequent volcanic eruptions in western Liaoning were primarily responsible for the massive death of animals. Specimens preserved in sleeping posture, like the type specimen of Repenomamus giganticus, may indicate that the emission of poisonous gas with the volcanic eruption was probably involved in causing the disaster.

A NEW PALEOCENE TILLODONT (TILLODONTIA, MAMMALIA) FROM QIANSHAN,ANHUI, WITH A REVIEW OF PALEOCENE TILLODONTS FROM CHINA

A left lower jaw from the Paleocene Wanghudun Formation of the Qianshan Basin, Anhui Province, southern China is described. It represents a new genus and species of tillodont, named Benaius qianshuiensis gen. et sp. nov. The new species is characterized by the following features: size small, dental formula 2+?·1·4·3, i2 not greatly enlarged, p1 present but reduced and laterally compressed, no metaconid on p3, and p4 submolarized without entoconid. Reexamination of dental features of the Chinese Paleocene tillodonts, including the originally assigned taxa and the reallocated forms of the order, suggests that Lofochaius, Meiostylodon, Interogale, Plethorodon and Simplodon have affinities to the order Tillodontia, whereas Anchilestes, Dysnoetodon, Huananius , and Yuesthonyx do not have close relationships to tillodonts. This conclusion is coincident with the result of the phylogenetic analysis on the basis of the dental characters.

Palaeozoic stromatoporoid futures: A discussion of their taxonomy, mineralogy and applications in palaeoecology and palaeoenvironmental analysis

Abstract Palaeozoic stromatoporoids are calcified sponges common between Middle Ordovician and Late Devonian times in reefs and related facies. Taxonomic work is well known, but controversial because of conflict between classification schemes based on the calcareous skeleton versus spicules (which are almost completely lacking in Palaeozoic stromatoporoids); however, lower-level taxonomy (at genus-level) of the calcareous skeleton is considered reliable to be applied in palaeobiological study. Knowledge of stromatoporoid ecology is poorly developed, such that comprehensive information is available for only a few case studies, in some Silurian and Devonian examples. Thus an overall understanding of stromatoporoid responses to environmental conditions has not yet been achieved, although stromatoporoids were likely able to deal with fine-grained sediment where they mostly occur. Many stromatoporoid genera have only certain growth forms, so future focus on the use of low-level taxonomy in ecological studies, by comprehensive sampling in high-resolution studies, may establish the relationships between stromatoporoids and their environments. Intergrown organisms and growth banding in stromatoporoids are aspects that have great potential in such work. Mineralogy of stromatoporoids remains poorly understood. Regardless of their apparent state of preservation (ranging from apparently well-preserved to complete loss of calcareous skeleton features) all stromatoporoids are in fact substantially recrystallized. They underwent a peculiar diagenesis, whereby the calcareous skeleton and gallery cements of all stromatoporoids are overprinted by irregular elongated calcite crystals arranged normal to the growth laminations, most clearly visible in cross-polarized light. Stromatoporoids co-occur with mollusc shells that are always either fully recrystallized or dissolved (present as internal and external moulds); this difference means that while molluscs are likely under-represented in the fossil record, stromatoproids are not, providing confidence for palaeoecological work on their assemblages. Stromatoporoids lack characters which would readily classify them as being originally aragonite or low-Mg calcite; they may have been high-Mg calcite but the evidence is circumstantial. Their peculiar diagenetic fabric also has implications for the debate about the relationship between stromatoporoids and the concept of aragonite/calcite seas, which requires more work.

Three abrupt climatic events since the Late Pleistocene in the North China Plain

Abstract Based on the data from 121 boreholes (9552 samples) and the distribution pattern analysis of foraminifera, ostracods, pollen, spores, wooly rhinoceros, elephants, water buffalo and beachrocks in time and space, three abrupt climate change events since the Late Pleistocene are recognized in the North China Plain. These climatic events caused three very warm periods and two severely cold periods. During the two warmest periods, the mean temperature was about 7°C higher than at present, and during the two extreme cold periods, the mean temperature was some 6° lower than today. Moreover, the last warm period was in the Middle Holocene; its mean temperature was 3° higher than now in the region.

Depositional Slope Break in Shallow Marine Shelf Setting and Its Control on Regional Forced Regressive Wedge Systems Tract

During the deposition of the Miocene Zhujiang Formation,the HZ Sag in the Pearl River Mouth Basin,South China Sea,was a stably deposited shelf setting.A large-scale paleo-Pearl River water system was developed in the western part of the study area and provided abundant terrestrial clastic deposits for the large-scale Pearl River delta.A case study on sequence PSQ6 has been carried out in this paper.The depositional slope break of sequence PSQ6 is characterized by a certain developing scale of about 4 km slope width,20-60 m height difference and 80 km transverse distribution range.Depositional slope breaks were mainly developed during the ending time of the depositional period of highstand systems tract delta of underlying sequence.A regional ditch-trough system was formed along the area between depositional slope break and carbonate buildup in the east of prodeltaic subfacies,thus provided a favorable paleogeomorphic setting for the deposition and preservation of PSQ6 forced regressive wedge systems tract(FRWST) and furthermore controlled the development of regional forced regressive wedge in shelf environment.The forced regressive sandbodies are easily formed due to the ditch-trough paleogeomorphic setting in shelf environment.The prograded sandbodies directly cover the shallow marine mudstones of the underlying sequence highstand systems tract and are overlaid with the dark-color mudstones of transgressive and highstand systems tracts,thus a favorable source-reservoir-caprock assemblage is formed and stratigraphic-lithologic hydrocarbon accumulations usually occur in these areas.
