A Review of Ice Deformation and Breaking Under Flexural-Gravity Waves Induced by Moving Loads

Abstract Ice-breaking methods have become increasingly significant with the ongoing development of the polar regions. Among many ice-breaking methods, ice-breaking that utilizes a moving load is unique compared with the common collision or impact methods. A moving load can generate flexural-gravity waves (FGWs), under the influence of which the ice sheet undergoes deformation and may even experience structural damage. Moving loads can be divided into above-ice loads and underwater loads. For the above-ice loads, we discuss the characteristics of the FGWs generated by a moving load acting on a complete ice sheet, an ice sheet with a crack, and an ice sheet with a lead of open water. For underwater loads, we discuss the influence on the ice-breaking characteristics of FGWs of the mode of motion, the geometrical features, and the trajectory of motion of the load. In addition to discussing the status of current research and the technical challenges of ice-breaking by moving loads, this paper also looks ahead to future research prospects and presents some preliminary ideas for consideration.

USE OF HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN ISOTOPES TO UNDERSTAND EVAPORATION FROM ENCLOSED WATERBODIES

Getting information on evaporation is important for water resource protection and managing regional enclosed waterbodies. Some lake water samples were collected in May and June from a representative enclosed waterbody – the Pearl Lake, Suzhou, China – and the hydrogen and oxygen isotopes determined. Most samples taken in June have higher δ18O and δD values than those in May, indicating that there are differences between the intensity of evaporation of May and June. This was further confirmed by the water samples’ d-excess values, which were below the meteoric line. However, the variations of d-excess value have been shown to be influenced by source moistures or evaporation processes, which were controlled by the local environment, e.g., whether the water was shaded or not. The residual water quantities calculated were 53 to 63% and 49 to 56% for May and June, respectively, relative to the initial water, indicating that about 5% of the water evaporated between 5 May and 5 June.

Statistical analyses of groundwater chemistry in the Qingdong coalmine, northern Anhui province, China: implications for water–rock interaction and water source identification

Abstract Hydrochemistry of groundwater is important in coal mines because it can be used for understanding water–rock interaction and inrush water source identification. In this study, major ion concentrations of groundwater samples from the loose layer aquifer (LA), coal-bearing aquifer (CA) and Taiyuan Formation limestone aquifer (TA) in the Qingdong coal mine, northern Anhui province, China, have been analyzed by a series of statistical methods for identifying the source of chemical constituents in groundwater and the source of inrush water. The results indicate that the mean concentration of the major ions in the LA were ordered as follows: HCO 3 − > SO 4 2− > Na + + K + > Cl − > Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ > CO 3 2− , whereas average values of the CA in decreasing order are SO 4 2− , Na + + K + , HCO 3 − , Cl − , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ and CO 3 2− , and the major ion concentrations of the TA have the following order: SO 4 2− > Na + + K + > Ca 2+ > HCO 3 − > Cl − > Mg 2+ > CO 3 2− , and most of the samples are Na-SO 4 and Ca-SO 4 types. TDS content in water increases with aquifer depth, whereas the pH values ranged from 7.1 to 8.9, indicating a weak alkaline environment. Two sources (weathering of silicate minerals and dissolution of evaporate minerals) have been identified by principal component analysis responsible for the chemical variations of the groundwater, and their contribution ratios have been quantified by Unmix model. Moreover, based on the Q-mode cluster and discriminant analyses, the samples with known sources have been identified correctly to be 95.7% and 97.6%, respectively, and the samples with unknown sources have been determined with high probability (78–100%).

APPLICATION OF MAJOR ION CONCENTRATIONS FOR THE PREDICTION OF STABLE ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION IN SURFACE WATER

The δ2H and δ18O values in water bodies are essential to the management of water resources because of the ability to insight into hydrological processes. In this study, we have measured and analyzed the major ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl–, SO24– and HCO–3 ) and stable H-O isotopes (δ2H and δ18O) for fifteen surface water samples collected from the Xinbian River in Suzhou, northern Anhui Province, China. The results show that all of the water samples are classified to be Na-HCO3 type, and the mean values of δ2H and δ18O are –42.93‰ and –5.36‰, respectively. Gibbs diagram and the relationship between δ2H and δ18O indicate that both water chemistry and stable isotopes in river water are mainly controlled by evaporation. Correlation analysis reveals that a significant correlation between major ions and δ18O. Predictors (K+, SO24– and HCO–3 ) have been selected by optimal subset regression analysis were used to model the δ18O values in the river water. Moreover, the residuals of the model were normally distributed and values between –0.2‰ to 0.2‰ for most water samples, suggesting a strong relationship between the observed and predicted δ18O values.
