Luminescence chronology of fluvial and marine records from subsurface core in Kaveri delta, Tamil Nadu: Implications to sea level fluctuations

South-Eastern coastal plains of India experience some of the major delta formations of the Indian subcontinent majorly affected by fluctuations of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and sea level. Past shoreline signatures in the form of palaeo beach ridges in Kaveri delta (Tamil Nadu, India), suggest a wave-dominated delta and thus past sea-level variations affecting directly the sedimentary dynamics of the Kaveri river forcing the river to either aggrade or prograde. Chronostratigraphic and foraminiferal study of the 25 m deep sediment core taken 2.5 km onshore from Tamil Nadu coast, Kaveri delta shows evidence of changing coastline over the last 150 ka. Various units in the core reflect eight major phases of increased sea level (~3.4 ka, ~5.0 ka, 9–6 ka, 60–57 ka, 89–81 ka, ~102 ka,~121 ka and 143–140 ka) partly coinciding with the global climate cycles MIS 1, MIS 3, MIS 5, MIS 6 respectively during the late Quaternary period. During ~121 ka and 9–6 ka, direct signature of marine transgression is observed by the presence of foraminifera in the core location. The study also shows that the sea transgression during ~121 ka was much longer-lasting and higher than during 9–6 ka, even though not revealed in the Quaternary sea level curve given by previous authors. Depositional breaks are observed in the core during periods of lower sea levels as the river responded by incision. Total organic matter of the deposition between 9–6 ka was observed as high as 2.5–6% suggesting oxygen stressed conditions during the period.

Luminescence chronology of late-Holocene palaeofloods in the upper Kaveri basin, India: An insight into the climate–flood relationship

Instrumental/historic records have helped to understand the extreme flood–climate relationship in the modern environment; however, few studies are available to understand their long-term relation (10 2 –10 3 years) due to the poor preservation and lack of dating techniques. It remains uncertain whether extreme flooding is linked with long-term wet phases of climate or a random event caused by an unusual downpour irrespective of climate. Luminescence analysis of quartz grains from river/floodplain sediments in the Kaveri basin, southern India, showed heterogeneous bleaching. We demonstrated the successful application of various statistical age models in estimating ages of heterogeneously bleached young sediments. This study shows distinct flood clusters occurred during the times of major shifts in the monsoon climate, from fluvial dormancy to sudden outburst of monsoons (~2 ka), from warmer to colder (onset of ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA) ~ 14th century), from colder to warmer (end of LIA ~ 19th century) and ~20th century, indicating that climatic pattern can be associated with more frequent occurrences of extreme flood events. The study also shows that the two major flood events of the 20th century reported from the upper Kaveri were produced by high intensity short duration storms, suggesting that not all wet phases are associated with major floods and all dry phases with low floods/droughts. The excellent match of the chronology with the historical data, instrumental data and published literature based on proxy data on the Indian summer monsoon validates the chronology and the potential of sedimentary archives for future palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the study area.

Variability of Indian monsoonal rainfall over the past 100 ka and its implication for C₃–C₄vegetational change

Oxygen and carbon isotope ratios of soil carbonate and carbon isotope ratios of soil organic matter (SOM) separated from three cores, Kalpi, IITK and Firozpur, of the Ganga Plain, India are used to reconstruct past rainfall variations and their effect on ambient vegetation. The δ 18 O values of soil carbonate (δ 18 O SC ) analyzed from the cores range from −8.2 to −4.1‰. Using these variations in δ 18 O SC values we are able, for the first time, to show periodic change in rainfall amount between 100 and 18 ka with three peaks of higher monsoon at about 100, 40 and 25 ka. The estimation of rainfall variations using δ 18 O value of rainwater-amount effect suggests maximum decrease in rainfall intensity (~ 20%) during the last glacial maximum. The δ 13 C values of soil carbonate (δ 13 C SC ) and SOM (δ 13 C SOM ) range from −6.3 to + 1.6‰ and −28.9 to −19.4‰, respectively, implying varying proportions of C 3 and C 4 vegetations over the Ganga Plain during the last 100 ka. The comparison between monsoonal rainfall and atmospheric CO 2 with vegetation for the time period 84 to 18 ka indicate that relative abundances of C 3 and C 4 vegetations were mainly driven by variations in monsoonal rainfall.
