An Analysis of the Current Situation of Ecological Flow Release from Large- and Medium-Sized Reservoirs in the Southeastern River Basins of China

Ecological flow is a crucial determinant of river ecosystem well-being and aquatic ecosystem stability. Large- and medium-sized reservoirs, with flood prevention, irrigation, and power generation functions, necessitate a scientifically devised ecological flow release plan for river ecosystem conservation and water quality amelioration. This study centered on three reservoirs in the Jiaojiang River Basin of Zhejiang Province, China. Using measured outflow data, the hydrological approach was initially adopted to calculate individual reservoir ecological flows. Subsequently, the entropy weight method was employed to ascertain the most suitable ecological flow. Ecological flow grade thresholds were then established to formulate the optimal release scheme. The outcomes demonstrated that the average ecological flows of Xia’an, Lishimen, and Longxi reservoirs were 1.90 m3/s, 1.95 m3/s, and 0.42 m3/s, respectively. The multi-year average ecological flow assurance rates were 62.53%, 77.72%, and 56.94%, successively. The entropy weighted downstream optimal ecological flows were 2.10 m3/s, 2.28 m3/s, and 0.44 m3/s. During periods when the monthly ecological flow assurance rate was below 60%, the three reservoirs implemented schemes of installing ecological siphons, renovating water diversion systems, and using post-dam ecological units, respectively.

Estimation of Concentration of Heterotrophic Bacteria in Surface Water of Great Wall Bay and Its Adjacent Waters, Antarctica and Preliminary Analysis of Some Relevant Factors

A survey was made of the number of the heterotrophic bacteria in surface seawater of Great Wall Bay and its adjacent waters, Antarctica during the period of austral summers from Dec.1993 to Feb. 1994. The result shows that the number of the heterotrophic bacteria in the surface waterof the surveyed area is about 798 CFU. cm-3, ranging from 53 to 4 250 CFU. cm-3. Comparison of thenumbers for three months shows a declining tendency month by month. Comparing with the previous results, this one shows that the heterotrophic bacteria number changes somewhat, but slightly. It is lower than that in nearshore waters but higher than that in the open area. This shows that there is a positive correlative relationship between CFU and NH4- N, which means that heterotrophic bacteria should be an important agent in NH4-N reproduction in the environment surveyed. There is an significant negative correlation both between CFU and NOZ-N, and between CFU and PO4-P. This means that the NOZ-N, PO.-P, which were decomposed and transformed by bacteria, were used rapidly by phytoplankton.

Assessing the contributions of human activities to runoff and sediment transport change: A method for break point identification in double mass curves based on model fitting

The upper Yellow River basin, the Wuding River basin, and the Xinshui River basin in China. The double mass curve (DMC) is a widely used tool for assessing the contributions of human activities to runoff and sediment transport change. Scientifically identifying break points in the DMC is crucial for the assessment of human activities contribution. This study proposes a DMC break point identification method using model fitting and applies it to three watersheds with different human disturbance intensities, while also highlighting issues that should be considered in the application of DMC. Compared to the baseline period, the runoff transport at Toudaoguai, Baijiachuan, and Daning stations decreased by 36.25 %, 43.68 %, and 51.17 %, with human activities contributing 109.64 %, 102.45 %, and 107.85 %, respectively. Human activities contribution was underestimated by 7.21 %, 6.88 %, and 14.45 %, respectively when using break point identification methods only based on runoff. Additionally, the trends in runoff (sediment) transport may not perfectly align with when human activities occur. The effect of human activities and climate change on runoff and sediment transport is not quantified in absolute terms, the human contributions calculated by DMC methods are only relative. The findings of this study can provide a scientific reference for the application of DMC to calculate the contribution of human activities to runoff and sediment transport change.
