Turnover Rate of Soil Organic Matter and Origin of Soil ¹⁴Co₂ in Deep Soil from a Subtropical Forest in Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve, South China

This paper examines the carbon isotopes ( 13 C, 14 C) of soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil CO 2 from an evergreen broadleaf forest in southern China during the rainy season. The distribution of SOC δ 13 C, and SOC content with depth, exhibits a regular decomposition of SOC compartments with different turnover rates. Labile carbon is the main component in the topsoil (0–12 cm) and has a turnover rate between 0.1 and 0.01 yr –1 . In the middle section (12–35 cm), SOC was mainly comprised of mediate carbon with turnover rates ranging between 0.01 and 0.025. Below 35 cm depth (underlayer section), the SOC turnover rate is slower than 0.001 yr –1 , indicating that passive carbon is the main component of SOC in this section. The total production of humus-derived CO 2 is 123.84 g C m –2 yr –1 , from which 88% originated in the topsoil. The middle and underlayer sections contribute only 10% and 2% to the total humus-derived CO 2 production, respectively. Soil CO 2 δ 13 C varies from –24.7‰ to –24.0‰, showing a slight isotopic depth gradient. Similar to soil CO 2 δ 13 C, Δ 14 C values, which range from 100.0‰ to 107.2‰, are obviously higher than that of atmospheric CO 2 (60–70‰) and SOC in the middle and underlayer section, suggesting that soil CO 2 in the profile most likely originates mainly from SOC decomposition in the topsoil. A model of soil CO 2 Δ 14 C indicates that the humus-derived CO 2 from the topsoil contributes about 65–78% to soil CO 2 in each soil gas sampling layer. In addition, the humus-derived CO 2 contributes ∼81% on average to total soil CO 2 in the profile, in good agreement with the field observation. The distribution and origin of soil 14 CO 2 imply that soil CO 2 will be an important source of atmospheric 14 CO 2 well into the future.

Radiocarbon‐derived source apportionment of fine carbonaceous aerosols before, during, and after the 2014 Asia‐Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Beijing, China

Abstract The Asia‐Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit took place in Beijing, China, 5–11 November 2014, during which numerous measures were performed to control the air pollution, and consequently, the sky of Beijing was so clean that the public called it “APEC blue.” The concentrations before, during, and after the APEC summit are 14.4 ± 6.81 µg C/m 3 , 6.66 ± 2.99 µg C/m 3 , and 32.3 ± 10.6 µg C/m 3 , respectively, for organic carbon (OC), and 2.27 ± 1.17 µg C/m 3 , 0.76 ± 0.52 µg C/m 3 , and 4.99 ± 1.74 µg C/m 3 , respectively, for elemental carbon (EC). We quantify the contributions of fossil and nonfossil sources to the OC and EC using radiocarbon. Results show that the contribution of nonfossil sources is 56 ± 1% (before APEC), 61 ± 1% (during APEC), and 48 ± 1% (after APEC), respectively, for OC, and 36 ± 4% (before APEC), 46 ± 1% (during APEC), and 33 ± 4% (after APEC), respectively, for EC. Comparing to the period before APEC, 70% and 60% of fossil EC and OC and 60% and 50% of nonfossil EC and OC are reduced, respectively, implying that the control on the nonfossil sources has considerable contribution to the good air quality in Beijing. Both EC and OC mass loadings during the APEC summit would have increased by 60% if the biomass‐burning activities were not taken into account for control. In such a case, the atmospheric visibility would decrease 20% at least and the blue sky thereby would likely not have been visible during the summit.

Penetration of Bomb ¹⁴C Into the Deepest Ocean Trench

Abstract The food source of hadal endemic fauna provides an insight into the carbon cycle in trenches and a biological adaptation to the impoverished and harsh trench environment. Here, we present the first Δ 14 C results of hadal amphipods from three trenches in the Pacific to define the organic matter source in these remote ecosystems. Amphipod muscle tissues contain a bomb 14 C signature (Δ 14 C from 10 ± 2‰ to 65 ± 2‰), thereby revealing a dietary preference for labile and fresh organic matter derived from the surface water. Thus, the carbon cycle in the deepest ocean trench has a tight linkage with the surface ocean via the food chain. The bomb 14 C dating result suggests that hadal amphipods have a low tissue turnover rate and an unexpectedly long lifetime (>10 years), at more than 4 times higher than the common longevity (~2 years) of amphipods in shallow waters.

Sources of non-fossil-fuel emissions in carbonaceous aerosols during early winter in Chinese cities

Abstract. China experiences frequent and severe haze outbreaks from the beginning of winter. Carbonaceous aerosols are regarded as an essential factor in controlling the formation and evolution of haze episodes. To elucidate the carbon sources of air pollution, source apportionment was conducted using radiocarbon (14C) and unique molecular organic tracers. Daily 24 h PM2. 5 samples were collected continuously from October 2013 to November 2013 in 10 Chinese cities. The 14C results indicated that non-fossil-fuel (NF) emissions were predominant in total carbon (TC; average = 65 ± 7 %). Approximately half of the EC was derived primarily from biomass burning (BB) (average = 46 ± 11 %), while over half of the organic carbon (OC) fraction comprised NF (average = 68 ± 7 %). On average, the largest contributor to TC was NF-derived secondary OC (SOCnf), which accounted for 46 ± 7 % of TC, followed by SOC derived from fossil fuels (FF) (SOCf; 16 ± 3 %), BB-derived primary OC (POCbb; 13 ± 5 %), POC derived from FF (POCf; 12 ± 3 %), EC derived from FF (ECf; 7 ± 2 %) and EC derived from BB (ECbb; 6 ± 2 %). The regional background carbonaceous aerosol composition was characterized by NF sources; POCs played a major role in northern China, while SOCs contributed more in other regions. However, during haze episodes, there were no dramatic changes in the carbon source or composition in the cities under study, but the contribution of POC from both FF and NF increased significantly.

The Use of Levoglucosan and Radiocarbon for Source Apportionment of PM_2.5Carbonaceous Aerosols at a Background Site in East China

Samples of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were collected during July 2009 to March 2010 at a regional background site in East China. The mass concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) were characterized by the highest levels in winter (December to February) and the lowest abundances in summer (June to August). Conversely, the concentrations of levoglucosan were higher in summer than in winter. The observations were associated to the anthropogenic air pollutions (predominantly fossil-fuel combustions) transport from the center and north China with the northwest winds in winter and large contribution of the open biomass burning activities in South China and East China in summer, which was evident by air-mass trajectories and MODIS satellite fire counts. To assign fossil and nonfossil contributions of carbonaceous matters, the radiocarbon contents in water-insoluble OC (WINSOC) and EC in 4 combined samples representing four seasons were analyzed using the isolation system established in China. The results indicated that biomass burning and biogenic sources (59%) were the major contribution to the WINSOC, whereas fossil fuel (78%) was the dominant contributor to the refractory EC at this site. The source variation obtained by radiocarbon was consistent with other indicators, such as the OC/EC ratios and the levoglucosan concentration. Biomass burning and biogenic emissions were found to predominate in the summer and autumn, whereas fossil fuel emissions predominate in winter and spring.
