Deformación hercínica de la cuenca devono-carbonífera de Los Santos de Maimona (Badajoz): implicaciones en la estructura de la Zona de Ossa-Morena

La cuenca de Los Santos de Maimona (Sur de la provincia de Badajoz), con una acusada morfologia elongada (3 * 25 km), esta limitada por 2 grandes fallas subparalelas, que ponen en contacto los materiales volcanosedimentarios que rellenan la cuenca (Devonico Superior-Carbonifero) con el bsamento neoproterozoico y Cambrico inferior. Dentro de la cuenca se reconoce hacia el sureste una zona emergida, una zona de platafroma en la parte central y unas facies de talud y de zonas mas profundas en las areas occidentales. La orogenia hercinica cerro la cuenca devono-carbonifera con la generacion de pliegues apretados pero sin desarrollo de foliacion. Estos pliegues, de direccion NO-SE, muestran flancos con buzamientos elevados (70o-90o) al igual que los ejes (>50o). La restitucion de la cartografia indica que esta deformacion tuvo lugar bajo un regimen transpresivo izquierdo, que llevo asociado un salto lateral de la menos 15 km. La ausencia de foliacion indica que la cizalla pura que acompano a la cizalla simple izquierda no pudo ser muy importante. El modelo de deformacion obtenido contrasta enormemente con los modelos que asocian las cuencas carboniferas a frentes sinorogenicos de grandes pliegues tumbados y mantos.

In the aim of the project Recognition of the Miocene of the distal region of the Lower Tagus Basin through a borehole with continuous sampling, Temperature, Natural Gamma Ray, Neutron (almost in all the borehole), Sonic, SP and SPR (in two small sections in upper and lower parts of the Miocene Series) geophysical logs were carried on.Interpretation of those logs and comparison with chronological, lithostratigraphical, micropaleontological and clay minerals data, helped in the definition of depositional sequences and to obtain paleoenvironmental reconstructions that could lead to a better understanding ofthe evolution of the Sembal Peninsula and Lisboa regions Miocene gulf. Log data agree with the lithologic succession observed in the Belverde borehole, essentially silty sandstones/sandy siltstones (with variable clay content) to clays, often with marly intercalations. Sonic logs (and Neutron logs, in general) reflect the sediments porosity. The higher acoustic velocities are often related to compact/massive layers as claystones and/or limestones and rather fossiliferous marly layers. Lower values are obtained for porous, silty sandstones (fossiliferous and with scarce clay content) and bio-calcareous sandstones. As indicative, we obtained the mean values of 2500-3000mls for the higher velocities and 1300-1600rn/s for the lowest ones. In Natural Gamma Ray log, the radiation peaks can be correlated to often fossiliferous marly micaceous layers. Radioactive micas are present. It seems that the gamma peaks and the depositional sequences previously defmed for the Lower Tagus Basin (see Antunes et ai., 1999,2000; Pais et al., 2002) can be correlated, taking also into account the whole available micropaleontological, palynological and isotopic evidence.

A new geological map of the Badajoz province (SW Spain) at a 1:100.000 scale is presented including substantial changes with respect to previously published cartographic compilations. The main modifications are related to the reference stratigraphic sequences and their chronology. The new stratigraphic and paleonthological data gathered reveal that large areas of the Ossa-Morena Zone (ZOM) previously attributed to either Precambrian, Ordovician or even Devonian are in fact of Cambrian age. This allows for a new stratigraphic column and a drastic simplification of the cartography by eliminating many of the 'Units' and 'Domains' that appeared in previous maps. In the areas of the La Codosera and Sierra de la Lapa (Central-lberian Zone), formations previously assigned to the Ordovician and Silurian have been found to be Upper Devonian to Carboniferous in age. Finally; the existence of a Devonian to Carboniferous continuous basin extending over the northern ZOM and southern ZCI is postulated. The changes introduced in the new geological map should have important implications in palinspastic models of the Hercynian paleogeography.
