Generalized Geological Model and Estimation of Hydrocarbon Bearing Prospects in the Northern Barents Sea

Summary This paper considers the results of summarized integrated geophysical investigations that were carried out from 2006 to 2012. The investigations included common depth point (CDP) seismic reflection survey, over water gravity survey, and differential hydromagnetic exploration with a total work scope of 30 000 linear kilometers. The deep structural tectonic plan, the structural and lithofacies features of the sedimentary cover section on the basic reflecting boundaries, and the features of the seismic sequences and seismic sections on a depth scale have been studied, and geological oil-and-gas zoning of the Northern Barents shelf has been made. Seventy-nine local anticlinal highs have been revealed, and the zones with potential nonstructural hydrocarbon traps have been determined. Due to the lack of huge anticlinal highs in the northern Barents Sea region, nonstructural traps are of interest in studying and replacing the mineral raw material base of Russia, as well as for arranging marine exploration.

Lower-upper Permian and Triassic Seismostratigraphic Complexes in the South-eastern Barents Sea

Present evaluation of Lower-Upper Permian and Triassic clastic deposits in the Russian Barents Sea shelf are based on detailed geological and seismostratigraphic interpretation of regional seismic lines acquired by MAGE in 2007-2009. Active uncompensated subsidence of South Barents and pre-Novaya Zemlya depressions in Early-Late Permian and sea level changes led to the formation of three sequences in which low-stand, transgressive and high-stand system tracts were identified. Low stand system tracts infill central parts of the basin and contain high-amplitude discontinuous reflections which may indicate sandstones of basin fans. High-stand system tracts are characterized by sigmoid progradational reflection pattern with high-amplitude facies at clinoform bends corresponding to perspective shallow-water reservoirs. Pemian-Triassic erosion unconformity is well-traced at the basin margins. Triassic strata in the study area were formed in deltaic, coastal and shallow-marine conditions under constant compensation of basin subsidence with large volumes of sediments. They are characterized by hummocky high-amplitude reflection configuration at basin margins and low-amplitude sub-parallel discontinuous seismic pattern in the central parts. Bright, parallel, continuous reflections in the Middle Triassic correspond to sea level rise and shale deposition. Structural and stratigraphic traps were identified in Triassic complex.

Development Zone Forecast of Possible Hydrocarbon Accumulation Features on the North Barents Shelf

Summary The work presents the generalized results of the regional integrated geophysical surveys conducted by JSC Marine arctic geological expedition (MAGE) in the North Barents shelf water area, including reflection seismic surveys, gravity and differential hydromagnetic measurements in the volume of 30 000 line kilometers. The works were performed under order of the Federal Subsoil Resources Management Agency (Rosnedra) within the frame of “Long-term government program of study and recovery of the Russian mineral resources base”. The conducted thematic studies allowed to reveal the trends for distribution of reservoir zones, cap rocks and source rock strata as well as development zones of possible hydrocarbon traps of different types - anticline traps, massive and combined - lithologic-stratigraphic ones. On the basis of the performed studies, a forecast for hydrocarbon potential of the studied region was made and classification of possible hydrocarbon accumulations depending on their prospectivity was carried out.

The East Siberian Sea Continental Margin: Geological Structure and Petroleum Potential.

Summary In 2011–2016 there were carried out investigations in order to study the regional peculiarities of the geological structure of sedimentary basins of the East Siberian Sea continental margin. The RV Geolog Dmitriy Nalivkin executed integrated regional marine exploration in the area of more than 52,200 km2 (3,600 lkm) and the RV Nikolay Trubyatchinsky conducted works in the area of 107,000 km2 (4,000 lkm) in the eastern part. The survey range consisted of 2D offshore seismic, shipboard gravity measurements and differential hydromagnetometry. The crustal structure has been studied to a depth of 22–30 km. The sedimentary cover in transitional area continent - ocean has been studied to a depth of 14.0 km. In the consolidated crust section there has been found the Archean-Proterozoic crystalline basement of an ancient platform, weakly dislocated Paleozoic-Mesozoic intermediate structural stage and the basin Upper Cretaceous-Cenozoic sedimentary cover. The expected oil and gas geological resources within the studied part of sedimentary basins of the East Siberian Sea continental margin are a little over 1.0 billion TOE. As part of the generalizing studies the seismostratigraphic model of the East Siberian shelf continental margin and the adjacent deep water areas has been composed taking into account modern seismic data.

Abstract New seismic research was carried out by JSC Marine Arctic Geological Expedition in 2006–2008, providing the first integrated geophysical grid (20×30 km). The main purpose was to study the geological structure of the sedimentary cover of the north Barents shelf and investigate the structural–tectonic plan at different stratigraphic levels. The geological results yielded new information on the tectonic structure, depositional environments, palaeobasin geometry, bathymetry and regional history of geological development. The geological interpretation of the Lower Palaeozoic part of the section provided the most interesting results.

The regional stage of geological exploration in the northern Barents Sea is almost complete. For the seismic observations the density there is more than 0.2 line km/km². The density has been achieved mostly through the surveys by JSC Marine Arctic Geological Expedition performed for the Federal Subsoil Resources Management Agency, Rosnedra, under the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation in 2006-2012. The total volume of completed geophysical surveys including 2D CMP reflection seismic acquisition, shipboard gravity and differential marine magnetometer measurements is more than 30,000 line km. The seismic data acquired along with the maps of anomalous potential fields and their continuations allowed for the evaluation of oil and gas potential in that region (Figure 1).
