Metallic‐State SnS₂ Nanosheets with Expanded Lattice Spacing for High‐Performance Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract Metallic‐state 2D SnS 2 nanosheets with expanded lattice spacing and a defect‐rich structure were synthesized by the intercalation of Ni into the van der Waals gap of SnS 2 . The expanded lattice spacing efficiently enhanced the electrochemical performance of the SnS 2 for sodium‐ion batteries owing to the change electron state density and energy band structure. In operando synchrotron XRD and theoretical calculations were used to gain insight into the influence of foreign metal‐ion doping and its location. The optimized architecture obtained by in situ uniform growth of nanosheets on carbon fibers significantly enhanced the electrochemical performance. The inherent advantages of this architecture are shorter paths for ion insertion and extraction, larger contact area for more sodium diffusion pathways, and superior electrolyte penetration. Benefiting from the Ni intercalated SnS 2 bilayer, the internal adjustment of the electronic state and the enlarged interlayer spacing significantly enhanced the electron transport kinetics, which can be explained by the metallic‐state properties. The integrated electrode exhibited an initial high reversible capacity of 795 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , with a stable capacity retention of 666 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. Good rate capability was also exhibited with specific capacities of 691, 564, 437 mAh g −1 at current densities of 200, 500, and 1000 mA g −1 , respectively.

Consolidating the Vulnerable Interphase of Ni-Rich Layered Cathode by Multifunctional Water-Based Binder

Ni-rich layered oxides hold significant promise as cathodes for lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, the susceptibility of their interphase at deep state-of-charge (SoC) imposes substantial limitations on their practical viability. Herein, we propose a water-based composite binder of dextran sulfate sodium-co-poly(acrylic acid) lithium (DSS-co-PAA(Li)) to address this dilemma. Capitalizing on the robust coordination bond interaction between the sulfate acid groups of DSS chains and transition-metal (TM) ion on the surface lattice, this functionally designed binder not only augments the cohesiveness within the electrode architecture but also effectively suppresses the vigorous reaction involving the highly labile Ni4+ and lattice O at the interphase. This attenuation is achieved by mitigating the undesirable phase transition and widening the energy gap between the Ni 3d and O 2p band of NCM811. Consequently, the NCM811 cathode with DSS-co-PAA(Li) binder yields an enhanced initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 93.3% and capacity retention of nearly 90% after 200 cycles.

In article number 1701610, Wen-Bin Luo, Shi-Xue Dou, and co-workers synthesize high energy density air-stable O3-type Na[Li0.05Mn0.50Ni0.30Cu0.10Mg0.05]O2 by a co-precipitation method, followed by high temperature annealing, a method suitable for mass production. It offers good compatibility with pristine hard carbon as the anode in the sodium-ion full cell system, delivering a high energy density of up to 215 W h kg−1 at 0.1 C and excellent electrochemical performance.

Advances in Low‐Temperature Dual‐Ion Batteries

Abstract Fabricating rechargeable batteries for low‐temperature (LT) applications is highly desired at high altitudes/latitudes, aerospace/subsea exploration, and defense. Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) suffer from severe loss of capacity and energy/power density at sub‐zero temperatures caused by the sluggish kinetics. By utilizing both cations and anions as charge carriers, dual‐ion batteries (DIBs) become a nascent battery system for LT tolerance by overcoming ion‐desolvation during discharge. Here, we summarize recent advances in LT DIBs. To begin with, distinctive advantages of DIBs at LTs are highlighted compared to LIBs, with a special attention to anion (de‐)intercalation, and the in‐depth understanding of key challenges for LT operation is discussed. The next major section deals with the exciting progress on the advanced strategies to improve the LT performance of DIBs, including alternative electrode materials, reliable electrolyte formulations, and construction of interphase protective layers. Finally, prospects and future developments in this exciting field of LT DIBs are suggested.

Dextran Sulfate Lithium as Versatile Binder to Stabilize High‐Voltage LiCoO₂ to 4.6 V

Abstract High‐voltage LiCoO 2 is an attractive cathode for ultra‐high energy lithium‐ion batteries in the 5G era. However, the practical application of LiCoO 2 is largely hindered by the unstable structure under high voltage. Herein, dextran sulfate lithium (DSL) is used as a versatile binder to improve the cycling stability of LiCoO 2 at 4.6 V. A coulombic efficiency of almost 100% and 93.4% capacity retention after 100 cycles has been achieved. The aqueous DSL binder can be evenly coated onto the surfaces of LiCoO 2 particles to function as an artificial interface, significantly preventing the decomposition of electrolyte and the dissolution of Co ions. More importantly, the superior interaction between the sulfate acid groups of DSL chains and the LiCoO 2 particles enhances the stability of CoO chemical bonds, further suppressing the detrimental phase transition from O3 to H1‐3 above 4.55 V. The stabilization of high‐voltage LiCoO 2 through the binder is facile and enlightening to design high energy battery materials.

Novel Germanium/Polypyrrole Composite for High Power Lithium-ion Batteries

Nano-Germanium/polypyrrole composite has been synthesized by chemical reduction method in aqueous solution. The Ge nanoparticles were directly coated on the surface of the polypyrrole. The morphology and structural properties of samples were determined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis was carried out to determine the polypyrrole content. The electrochemical properties of the samples have been investigated and their suitability as anode materials for the lithium-ion battery was examined. The discharge capacity of the Ge nanoparticles calculated in the Ge-polypyrrole composite is 1014 mAh g−1 after 50 cycles at 0.2 C rate, which is much higher than that of pristine germanium (439 mAh g−1). The composite also demonstrates high specific discharge capacities at different current rates (1318, 1032, 661 and 460 mAh g−1 at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 C, respectively). The superior electrochemical performance of Ge-polypyrrole composite could be attributed to the polypyrrole core, which provides an efficient transport pathway for electrons. SEM images of the electrodes have demonstrated that polypyrrole can also act as a conductive binder and alleviate the pulverization of electrode caused by the huge volume changes of the nanosized germanium particles during Li+ intercalation/de-intercalation.
