Quantitative patterns of morphological variation in the appendicular skeleton of the Early Cretaceous birdConfuciusornis

Confuciusornis sanctus stands out among the remarkable diversity of birds of the Jehol biota (Lower Cretaceous, Liaoning Province, China). Its basal position in the phylogenetic tree of birds, combined with the exceptional number of well-preserved, largely complete and articulated specimens, makes it a perfect model system for studying the variation, development and life history of early Mesozoic birds. A comprehensive morphometric study (measurements of humerus, ulna, radius, femur and tibia) previously identified two distinct size classes of C. sanctus, while demonstrating the lack of statistical support of the association between this size dimorphism and the characteristic pair of long tail feathers present in some specimens. Four plausible explanations were discussed to account for the resultant size classes: the existence of more than one species in the sample; sexual size dimorphism; two size classes corresponding to attritional death assemblages; and/or a particular growth pattern similar to that inferred for non-avian dinosaurs. Here we present an expanded statistical analysis based on a larger sample of C. sanctus that substantiates previous interpretations, but also addresses the statistical association between the presence/absence of tail feathers and fore- and hind-limb allometry. We discuss the implication of the resulting quantitative patterns of morphological variation to understand better confuciusornithid taxonomy and the life history of C. sanctus.

Mosaic evolution in an asymmetrically feathered troodontid dinosaur with transitional features

Abstract Asymmetrical feathers have been associated with flight capability but are also found in species that do not fly, and their appearance was a major event in feather evolution. Among non-avialan theropods, they are only known in microraptorine dromaeosaurids. Here we report a new troodontid, Jianianhualong tengi gen. et sp. nov., from the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group of China, that has anatomical features that are transitional between long-armed basal troodontids and derived short-armed ones, shedding new light on troodontid character evolution. It indicates that troodontid feathering is similar to Archaeopteryx in having large arm and leg feathers as well as frond-like tail feathering, confirming that these feathering characteristics were widely present among basal paravians. Most significantly, the taxon has the earliest known asymmetrical troodontid feathers, suggesting that feather asymmetry was ancestral to Paraves. This taxon also displays a mosaic distribution of characters like Sinusonasus , another troodontid with transitional anatomical features.

Digital restoration of the pectoral girdles of two Early Cretaceous birds, and implications for early flight evolution

Abstract Pectoral girdle morphology is a key determinant of flight capability, but in some respects is poorly known among stem birds. Here, we reconstruct the pectoral girdles of the Early Cretaceous birds Sapeornis and Piscivorenantiornis based on computed tomography and three-dimensional visualization, revealing key morphological details. Enantiornithines such as Piscivorenantiornis have a uniquely localized scapula-coracoid joint, with only one area of articulation. This single articulation contrasts with the double articulation widely present in non-enantiornithine pennaraptoran theropods, including Sapeornis and crown birds, which comprises main and subsidiary articular contacts. A partially closed triosseal canal occurs in non-euornithine birds, representing a transitional stage in flight apparatus evolution. Numerous modifications of the pectoral girdle along the line to crown birds, and lineage-specific pectoral girdle variations, produced diverse pectoral girdle morphologies among Mesozoic birds, which ensured that a commensurate range of capability levels and modes emerged during the early evolution of flight.

An Analytical Method for Determining the Bottom‐Hole Pressure of Vertical Well With Multiple Fractures

Hydraulic fracturing has been a common treatment to enhance well productivity, especially in tight oil and gas reservoirs. Studying the pressure response characteristics of fractured reservoir has been a hot topic due to the significant contribution of fractures to conductivity enhancement. Because of the difficulty in describing the flow problems in vertical fractured well and the lack of related literatures, a novel method to determine the bottom‐hole pressure of a vertical well with multiple fractures based on Newman product method is proposed in this paper. First, the physical model and corresponding mathematical model are established. Then, the solution of bottom‐hole pressure can be obtained through Laplace transformation. Sequentially, the validations of computational method and computational codes contain are presented. From the view of curve fitting and interpretation results, the calculations in this paper are in good agreement with the previous numerical results and our computation method is reliable. Next, a group of typical curves are generated to analyze the flow regimes. And a series of curves are generated to demonstrate effects of key parameters on curve shape. The results indicate that increasing the fracture wings, fracture intersection angle, and fracture length uniformity can enhance the well productivity. Lastly, a case study is exhibited to show the application of the proposed method.

Endocranial morphology of Liaoceratops yanzigouensis (Dinosauria: Ceratopsia) from Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota of Liaoning in China

Liaoceratops is a small basal neoceratopsian dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota of western Liaoning, China. Because its postcranial skeleton is lacking, its behaviour and palaeoecology remain poorly understood. By using computed tomography (CT), we reconstructed the cranial endocast and endosseous labyrinths of an adult individual of Liaoceratops yanzigouensis (PMoL-AD00097). Analysis and comparisons indicate that the brain, olfactory bulb and inner ear of adult Liaoceratops more closely resemble those observed in adult specimens of the basal ceratopsian Psittacosaurus than those in more derived ceratopsians. The relatively large olfactory bulb, discernible floccular lobes, and relatively long semicircular canals suggest that the adult Liaoceratops had a keen sense of smell, a well-developed sensory input for the reflexive stabilisation of gaze and posture, and a nearly horizontal head posture. Based on its relatively short cochlear ducts, adult Liaoceratops likely vocalised at and heard more efficiently to relatively high frequencies than the derived ceratopsian Pachyrhinosaurus and Triceratops. The relatively well-developed semicircular canals suggest that adult Liaoceratops was agile biped and had a similar locomoter mode with adult Psittacosaurus.

Cranial morphology of an Early Cretaceous Monjurosuchid (Reptilia: Diapsida) from Liaoning Province of China and evolution of the choristoderan palate

A new specimen of Philydrosaurus proseilus from the Early Cretaceous Chiufotang (Jiufotang) Formation preserves the first complete palate of a monjurosuchid choristodere. As in other choristoderes, the palate of Philydrosaurus is akinetic, extended by a broad contact between the vomer and maxilla, and equipped with multiple batteries of palatal teeth. This specimen provides phylogenetically significant information and clarifies the distribution of many apomorphies within Choristodera. Philydrosaurus is primitive relative to the Neochoristodera in that it exhibits only a moderate degree of posterior displacement of the choanae and retains a relatively large interpterygoid vacuity. However, Philydrosaurus also exhibits several derived features previously considered diagnostic of the Neochoristodera, including establishment of a long midline contact of the pterygoids and development of a distinct nasopalatal trough extending from the choana. The choristodere palate exhibits significant modification of the primitive diapsid condition, including elongation of the vomers, establishment of a vomer–maxilla contact, posterior displacement of the choanae, development of the nasopalatal trough, and reduction of the interpterygoid vacuity.
