Tectonic characteristics of the Qinzhou-Hangzhou Joint Belt

The continent of South China is composed of the Yangtze and Cathayian Blocks,with a collision joint belt-Qinzhou-Hangzhou Joint Belt between them.According to their differences of strata and deformations,they can be further divided into subunit,such as the Zhanggongshan tectonic melange,the Shaoxing-Jiangshan joint belt,etc.The Zhanggongshan tectonic melange overprints itself over the Jiangnan ancient island arc on south margin of the Yangtze Block,while the Shaoxing-Jiangshan joint belt represents the subducted ocean land and melange in the marginal sea between two blocks.This belt underwent several collision and joint events from Jinning epoch to Caledonian epoch.During the Jinning epoch,the Cathayian Block subducted toward the Yangtze Block and collided each other,together with a strike-slip event,thus formed a lenticular-reticulation ductility shear zone and three-stage folds.During the Caledonian epoch,the Cathayian Block collided with the Yangtze Block again and thrusted upon the Yangtze Block,inducing the Caledonian orogen of South China thrusted over the Jinning orogen.Thus brought about the final complete amalgamation of the Yangtze Block and Cathaysian Block,giving rise to the unifying South China continent and covered by the Neopaleozoic sedimentary strata.

Establishment of the Zhenzhushan Group in northeast Jiangxi and its signi ficance

The Zhenzhushan Group consists of a suite of Mesoproterozoic J ix ianian metamorphosed abyssal turbidite and volcanic rocks in the eastern segment of the convergence zone between the Yangtze plate and the Cathaysian plate in the Wuyuan-Leping areas,northern Jiangxi.From below upward it can be further divided into the Fuzikeng Formation,Zhangshan Formation,Zhouxi Formation and Zhongzhou Formation.Volcanism shows the trend of evolutions from weak to st rong and again to weak.The petro-chemical characteristics suggest that the tec tonic environment belongs to the volcanic island arc or active marginal basin and that the group is stratigraphically equivalent to the Xiushui Formation of the Shuangqiaoshan Group and the Xikou Group in a back-arc basin,the Zhujia Group,Tongchang Group-complex and Zhangcun Group-complex in an inter-arc bas in and the Shuangxiwu Group in a volcanic is-land arc,but they differ greatl y in rock association.They are synchronous but heteropic products.They combi ne to form a double-island arc orogenic belt model on the Yangtze continental m argin.It is the re-sult of subduction-collisional orogeny of the Cathaysian plate and Yangtze plate at the end of the Meso-proterozoic.The establishment of the Zhenzhushan Group provides new evidence for Mesoproterozoic plate col lision in South China.

Features of Caledonian tectonic deformation in the Zhejiang-Anhui-Jiangxi border region,China

The Zhejiang-Anhui-Jiangxi border region was affected by the South China Caledonian tectonic event in the Caledonian period. As a result, the pre-Sinian basement and earliest Paleozoic cover were strongly uplifted and folded and the Early-Mid Carboniferous strata in the Zhejiang-Anhui-Jiangxi border region directly overlies the Mesoproterozoic low-grade metamorphic series and the Middle Carboniferous in the Qingliangfeng area at the eastern end of the region overlies the Upper Cambrian, but no evidence of Caledonian magmatism is found. In addition, the Sinian-Early Silurian covers on the southern and eastern sides of the craton are detached toward the two sides and overturned together with the basement near the contact zone to form overturned folds. The covers on the northern side are detached toward the north to form slip-superposed folds and the Linxi and Lantian relict synclinal basins. The Indosinian and Yanshanian events significantly modified the Caledonian tectonic features and finally formed the tectonic framework that in the main continues to the present.
