Regulating the Surface Passivation and Residual Strain in Pure Tin Perovskite Films

The passivation of electronic defects at the surfaces and grain boundaries of perovskite materials is one of the most important strategies for suppressing charge recombination in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Although several passivation molecules have been investigated, few studies have focused on their application in regulating both the surface passivation and residual strain of perovskite films. In this study, the residual strain distribution profiles of the Cs0.1FA0.9SnI3 perovskite thin films and their effect on the photovoltaic device efficiencies were investigated. We found a gradient distribution of the out-of-plane compressive strain that correlated with the compositional inhomogeneity perpendicular to the substrate surface. By deliberately engineering dual effects of the surface passivation and residual strain, we achieved a record power conversion efficiency of up to 9.06%, the highest ever reported in a typical n–i–p architecture.

A new mechanism for mineralizing systems based on cnoidal wave instabilities

The formation of mineral deposits in mesothermal quartz veins is a complex process that has been the subject of much research. The classical fault-valve hypothesis suggests that mineralization occurs when metamorphic fluids are injected during a brittle event and then locked in to mineralize, but this hypothesis does not fully explain the regular spacing of repeated mineralized patterns that are often observed. This paper proposes a new mechanism for mineralizing systems based on the theory of cnoidal waves in solids. Cnoidal waves are standing waves that can persist for long times in materials under compressive and extensional regimes. We investigate mineral deposits by analytical and numerical methods and show that the cnoidal wave instability theory provides a plausible alternative mechanism for mineralizing systems. This study opens a new avenue for field studies to demonstrate that the mechanism-based cnoidal waves play an essential role in the formation of mineral deposits.

THMC instabilities and the Multiphysics of Earthquakes

Theoretical approaches to earthquake instabilities propose shear dominated instabilities as a source mechanism. Here we take a fresh look at the role of possible volumetric instabilities preceding a shear instability. We investigate the phenomena that may prepare earthquake instabilities using coupling of Thermo-Hydro-Mechano-Chemical (THMC) reaction-diffusion equations in a THMC diffusion matrix. We show that the off-diagonal cross-diffusivities can give rise to cross-diffusion slow (no inertia) pressure waves and propose that a resonance phenomenon of the long-wavelength limit causes constructive interference and triggers the seismic moment release.

Dendritic Growth Patterns in Rocks: Inverting the Driving and Triggering Mechanisms

Abstract Mineral precipitation can form complex patterns under non‐equilibrium conditions, in which two representative patterns are rhythmic Liesegang stripes and fractal dendrites. Interestingly, both patterns occur in the same rock formations, including various dendritic morphologies found in different rocks, such as limestone and sandstone. However, the underlying mechanism for selecting the vastly different mineral precipitation patterns remains unclear. We use a phase‐field model to reveal the mechanisms driving pattern selection in mineral precipitation. Simulations allow us to explore the effects of diffusion parameters on determining the dendritic morphologies. We also propose a general criterion to distinguish the resulting dendrites in simulations and field observations based on a qualitative visual distinction into three categories and a quantitative fractal dimension (FD) phase diagram. Using this model, we reproduce the classified dendrites in the field and invert for the key parameters that reflect the intrinsic material properties and geological environments. This study provides a quantitative tool for identifying the morphology selection mechanism with potential applications to geological field studies, exploration for resource evaluation, and other potential industrial applications.

A Thermodynamically Based Modified Cam‐Clay Model for Post‐Bifurcation Behavior of Deformation Bands

Abstract Compaction bands are a type of localized deformation that can occur as diffuse or discrete bands in porous rocks. While modeling of shear bands can replicate discrete and diffusive bands, numerical models of compaction have so far only been able to describe the formation of discrete compaction bands. In this study, we present a new thermodynamic approach to model compaction bands that is able to capture both discrete and diffuse compaction band growth. The approach is based on a reaction‐diffusion formalism that includes an additional entropy flux. This entropic velocity regularizes the solution, by introducing a characteristic diffusion length scale and controlling the mode change from discrete to diffusive post‐localisation growth. The approach is used to model compaction band growth in highly porous carbonates. The model can replicate the areas of material damage exhibiting reduced porosity which are often observed as nuclei for the growth of compaction bands in experiments. The model also has the versatility to predict the formation of diffuse compaction bands, which is a significant advance in the field of compaction band modeling. The method can potentially be used for investigating the effect of material heterogeneities on compaction band growth and is heuristic for developing new methodologies for forecasting compaction band formation.

The dynamic evolution of compaction bands in highly porous carbonates: the role of local heterogeneity for nucleation and propagation

Abstract The formation of compaction bands in porous brittle rocks such as sandstones and carbonates has a significant impact on the localization mechanisms preceding earth and planetary surface instabilities such as earthquakes, landslides, and plate boundary faults. The micromechanics underpinning the dynamics of the formation of compaction bands and its effect on alteration of pore fluid pathways are not yet fully understood. The current study seeks to understand the mechanical properties of compaction in highly porous carbonate at micro- and macro-scale using time-lapse triaxial experiments in an X-ray transparent flow and deformation cell. Images were obtained with increasing axial strain levels using X-ray computed tomography allowing mapping of the evolution of internal structures. In addition to the X-ray analysis, digital image correlation (DIC) was used to quantify the evolution of strain and precisely identify the nucleation mechanism of compaction bands and its dynamics. The effect of friction on the boundary platens was shown to be minimal as evidenced by shear strain obtained from DIC analysis. This comprehensive analysis allowed assessment of the role of heterogeneity for the initiation of compaction bands. Local regions with high porosity provide the initial seeds for discrete compaction followed by the nucleation of traveling waves that lead to diffuse growth of the compaction zone. This interesting phenomenon is expected to be a fundamental mode of compressional deformation in porous brittle media where discrete, often periodic, deformation bands are observed on compaction.

Dynamic Mechanism of Catastrophic Collapse: An New Perspective on Earthquake Physics

The collapse of man-made and natural structures is a complex phenomenon that has been studied for centuries. We propose a new approach to understanding catastrophic instabilities, based on the idea that they do not occur at the critical point, but rather develop out of the subcritical regime as short-lived extreme events. We use an extension of Onsager's reciprocal theorem to study the subcritical regime, and we show that excitable systems in this regime are attracted to a nonlocal equilibrium that defines the maximum entropy production of at least two interacting phases. In most cases, these feedback systems are arrested by dissipative processes at larger scale, but in rare cases they can form tensor networks of instabilities that ripple from the small scale to the largest scale, forming extreme events.
