Characteristics of PmP phases from earthquakes and their role in crustal tomography:An active volcanic area example,northeastern Japan

Later earthquake-sourced PmP phases have the potential to significantly improve ray coverage and resolution of crustal tomography methods,as their trajectories are quite different from those of shallower P phases.This paper analyzes the characteristics of later PmP arrival times from earthquakes with different focal depths.The results show that PmP arrival time differences from earthquakes at a range of focal depths are gradually lowered with increasing offset.We found that where the first recorded P-wave phase was the intra-crustal refraction phase(Pg),the differences in arrival time between Pg and PmP phases decreased with increasing focal depth at an offset of less than 120 km.Where the first P-wave phase is the upper mantle refraction phase(Pn),the difference in arrival times between Pn and PmP phases became larger with an increase in focal depth at an offset of more than 150 km.A total of 394 PmP phases and 3356 first P phases were picked from seismograms in the active volcanic area of northeastern Japan,according to the characteristics of calculated arrival times,amplitudes and particle motions.These were used to investigate the role of PmP phases in crustal tomography beneath an active volcanic region.Results of the detailed resolution analysis show that the addition of PmP data can improve significantly the resolution of the lower crustal structure in tomographic images.After the PmP data were included in the tomographic inversion,the path of upwelling magma,along which a series of low-frequency microearthquakes is clearly distributed,was better imaged.These results suggest that the PmP phase has an important role in detailed crustal tomography.

Susceptibility evaluation of slip avalanche-slip geohazards in Xiangyun (Southwest China) based on lM-LR coupling

Xiangyun County is a typical mountainous county. At present, few people have studied geological hazards in Xiangyun County, so it is particularly important to choose appropriate methods for disaster assessment in the study area. (1) Research background: Xiangyun County is located in western Yunnan, China, where geological disasters such as landslides and collapses occur frequently. Not only endanger the safety of people's lives and property, but also destroy the ecological environment within the territory. (2) Methods: The distribution characteristics and influencing factors of geological hazards in Xiangyun County were studied and analyzed, and 9 influencing factors such as elevation, slope, slope direction, stratigraphic lithology, NDVI and rainfall were selected to evaluate the disaster susceptibility of the study area. Through the correlation analysis of evaluation factors, the evaluation system is constructed by combining the information model and the information—logistic regression model. Using ArcGIS software, the study was divided into 5 grades: extremely high, high, medium, low and extremely low prone areas. (3) Results: ROC curve was used to test the evaluation results of the two models respectively. The accuracy of the information model was 74%, and the accuracy of the coupling model was 83%. Extremely high and high-risk areas account for 18% and 24% of the total area, respectively. (4) Conclusion: The results show that the coupled model test has a high precision and can provide a reliable basis for this evaluation.

Crustal structure and its low-velocity layer in transition zone of South China

Low-velocity layer in crustal structure has a close relationship with tectonic and dynamic settings.Many seismic profiles in South China have demonstrated that low-velocity layer generally exists in the middle crust.The onshore-offshore deep seismic experiment was implemented in the transition zone between South China and northeastern South China Sea in 2001.By analyzing the seismic data from land stations and OBSs,different seismic phases were identified,and their travel time arrivals were modeled by ray-tracing program MacRay.Then the crustal structure was obtained along OBS-2001 profile,and the low-velocity layer was identified based on its travel-time gap.The low-velocity(5.5—5.9km·s~(-1)) layer exists in the bottom of upper crust(10.0—18.0 km deep)from Xintang area to 150.0 km SE of the Nanao Island,with a thickness about 3.0—4.0 km.It has a relatively stable spacial distribution and was deduced to be the extensionof the low-velocity layer of South China.The dehydration of water-containing minerals and the presence of melted or partially melted rock in the crust maybe the main factors that reduce the P-wave velocity.
