Plutonism and Precambrian Magmatism in India

* E-mail: tahmad001@yahoo.co.in; tahmad001@gmail.com We summarize the work done by various workers on plutonism and Precambrian magmatic activities in India. During the last four years (2004-2007) several integrated studies on plutons (including Archaean-Proterozoic magmatism) involving field-based strain fabrics mapping, petrology, geochronology and whole-rock geochemistry including isotopes have been carried out and published in peer-reviewed international and Indian journals. Archaean geological period represents one-third history of our planet. Paradoxically despite the fact that much of the growth of continental crust and important mineralization probably occurred at this time, little is known about this period. Numerous studies suggest that Archaean represented a period during which crust formed and stabilized into cratons. All the exposed Archaean cratons are dominated by three lithological associations: (i) tonalitic-trondhjemiticgranodioritic (TTG) assemblages which represents first differentiates of the continental crust, (ii) volcanicsedimentary greenstone associations (greenstone belts) which contain ultra-high-temperature lavas, the best witness of Archaean mantle, and (iii) voluminous late potassic granite plutons, which are often associated with high-grade metamorphism, that provide information on crustal reworking, granite-greenstone tectonics and cratonization of Archaean crust.

Geochronological and geochemical constraints on the petrogenesis of alkali granites from the Makrohar Granulite Belt: Evidence for Mesoproterozoic extensional regime in the eastern Central Indian Shield

The Chotanagpur Gneissic Complex (CGC) is characterized by the Makrohar Granulite Belt (MGB) at its north‐western margin parallel to Son‐Narmada lineaments. The MGB exhibits a typical association of mantle‐derived mafic tholeiitic and alkaline rocks along with the felsic units. The zircon U–Pb data on the intrusive granite gneiss from this association define a crystallization age of 1,498 ± 38 Ma, representing a widespread Mesoproterozoic within‐plate magmatic event in CGC synchronous with the breakup of the Columbia Supercontinent. These granite gneisses have an alkaline affinity and are metaluminous in character. They exhibit many of the geochemical characteristics of anorogenic (A‐type) magmas, including enrichment of incompatible trace elements, like Zr, Hf, Nb, Y, Ga, and rare earth elements (REE), but low in Ba and Sr as well as high FeO t /(FeO t + MgO) (~0.98) values and Ga/Al (~3.92) ratios. They show less fractionated REE patterns, characterized by relatively enriched LREE and flat HREE with negative Eu anomaly, and have high Zr‐saturation temperatures (~955°C). Considering their field characteristics and all the geochemical and isotopic features, we conclude that they were derived from melting the lower crust metasomatized by mantle‐derived alkali‐rich fluids due to asthenospheric upwelling.

The Aravalli Craton is situated on the north-western edge of India and has a geological history ranging from the Paleoarchean to the Quaternary.The basement of the Aravalli Craton (Banded Gneissic Complex or BGC) and its supracrustal sequences (Aravalli and Delhi Supergroups) serve as an excellent archive to understand the crustal and geodynamic evolution of continental crusts during the Precambrian period of the Earth's history.Here, we present a brief overview along with the recent developments on the status of its Precambrian geology.
