The evolution of chemical ordering and property in Fe1+xSe2 upon intercalation ratios

ABSTRACT Intercalation has been considered as an effective method to explore innovative two-dimensional (2D) materials and modify their properties. However, the relationship between intercalation concentration, structure, and property remains a largely uncharted territory, and the controllable synthesis of desired intercalated phases faces challenges. Here, a general intercalated rule for the effect of self-intercalation ratio on atomic arrangements is revealed. Then, the controllable synthesis of a series of Fe-intercalated 2D materials is realized. Scanning transmission electron microscopy illustrates that their intercalation structures undergo disordered/ordered/half-ordered/ordered transformation, which confirms the intercalated rule and proposes a new structure termed half-ordered intercalation. Notably, their magnetic and electrical properties can be significantly modulated by intercalation. Orderly intercalated nanoflakes possess room-temperature magnetism with composition-regulated magnetic domains. Moreover, Fe1.5Se2 and Fe1.6Se2 are scarce half-metallic materials showing different magneto-resistance behaviors. This work would guide the design and synthesis of new intercalated materials, and deepen the understanding of the relationship between structure and properties.

Dislocation-driven growth of two-dimensional lateral quantum-well superlattices

The advent of two-dimensional (2D) materials has led to extensive studies of heterostructures for novel applications. 2D lateral multiheterojunctions and superlattices have been recently demonstrated, but the available growth methods can only produce features with widths in the micrometer or, at best, 100-nm scale and usually result in rough and defective interfaces with extensive chemical intermixing. Widths smaller than 5 nm, which are needed for quantum confinement effects and quantum-well applications, have not been achieved. We demonstrate the growth of sub-2-nm quantum-well arrays in semiconductor monolayers, driven by the climb of misfit dislocations in a lattice-mismatched sulfide/selenide heterointerface. Density functional theory calculations provide an atom-by-atom description of the growth mechanism. The calculated energy bands reveal type II alignment suitable for quantum wells, suggesting that the structure could, in principle, be turned into a "conduit" of conductive nanoribbons for interconnects in future 2D integrated circuits via n-type modulation doping. This misfit dislocation-driven growth can be applied to different combinations of 2D monolayers with lattice mismatch, paving the way to a wide range of 2D quantum-well superlattices with controllable band alignment and nanoscale width.

Enhanced performance of in-plane transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers by configuring local atomic structures

Abstract The intrinsic activity of in-plane chalcogen atoms plays a significant role in the catalytic performance of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). A rational modulation of the local configurations is essential to activating the in-plane chalcogen atoms but restricted by the high energy barrier to break the in-plane TM-X (X = chalcogen) bonds. Here, we theoretically design and experimentally realize the tuning of local configurations. The electron transfer capacity of local configurations is used to screen suitable TMDs materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Among various configurations, the triangular-shape cobalt atom cluster with a central sulfur vacancy (3Co Mo - V S ) renders the distinct electrocatalytic performance of MoS 2 with much reduced overpotential and Tafel slope. The present study sheds light on deeper understanding of atomic-scale local configuration in TMDs and a methodology to boost the intrinsic activity of chalcogen atoms.
