Magmatism at Passive Margins: Effects of Depth‐Dependent Wide Rifting and Lithospheric Counterflow

Abstract Rifted passive margins exhibit a large variety in the timing, distribution, and amount of magmatism. The factors controlling magmatism during rifted margin formation, remain, however, incompletely understood, partly owing to the complex rifting styles. In this study, we use 2‐Dimensional numerical models to investigate the effects of depth‐dependent wide rifting and lithospheric counterflow on magmatism during rifted margin formation. Results show that a strong crust promotes narrow margins with a sharp transition to normal thickness oceanic crust whereas a weak crust promotes depth‐dependent wide rifting, with preferential removal of mantle lithosphere, leading to formation of wide margins with over‐thickened (>18 km) igneous crust in the distal margin. Counterflow of depleted lithospheric mantle, in contrast, may delay syn‐rift magmatism, and result in exhumed a‐magmatic continental mantle at narrow margins. The combination of wide rifting and lithospheric counterflow results in magma‐poor wide margins, with in some cases a transition to excess magmatic activity at breakup. Our models provide an explanation for the contrasting magmatic productivity at narrow and wide rifted margins, such as observed in the Lofoten‐Vesterålen, Newfoundland, Kwanza Basin, and Orange Basin margins.

No direct correlation of mantle flow beneath the North China Craton to the India-Eurasia collision: constraints from new SKS wave splitting measurements

The long-range effects of the ongoing India-Eurasia collision and their role in the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of eastern China are not well understood. Here, we investigate deformation beneath the North China Craton and the Qilian Mountain region between the Haiyuan and Kunlun faults, both of which are located immediately to the northeast of the Tibetan Plateau. We present teleseismic shear wave splitting parameters from 299 broad-band stations. These stations provided good spatial coverage in mapping upper-mantle deformation beneath the North China Craton and the Qilian Mountain. The backazimuth dependence of fast directions from stations located within the Qilian Mountain region indicates a complex anisotropy pattern. A multilayer anisotropy and/or anisotropy with a dipping symmetry axis may exist beneath the Qilian Mountain. The overlapping or underthrusting of material evident in anisotropy from this region may be a long-range effect of the India-Eurasia collision. The central North China Craton showed spatially coherent fast directions and the shear wave velocity anomalies within the upper mantle. These patterns suggest horizontal deflection of a regional mantle upwelling, possibly originating from the mantle transition zone. Anisotropy with large delay times was observed in the vicinity of Shanxi rift system. High ∂lnVS/∂lnVP values for the upper mantle indicate that anisotropy in this area is enhanced by vertically aligned melt-filled fissures. Our results suggest that the dynamic processes beneath the central North China Craton are not directly related to the India-Eurasia collision.

The Trans Mojave-Sierran shear zone and its role in Early Miocene collapse of southwestern North America

Abstract The relative motion between the Pacific and North American plates in early Miocene time was not parallel to the overall NW strike of the transform, but was instead oblique and transtensional. It has recently been proposed that in response to this divergence, the western edge of the North American plate east of the transform gravitationally collapsed and moved 100–150 km to the southwest (S50°–60°W). The region of collapse covered an area of nearly 10 6 km 2 and included what is now southern California, southwestern Arizona, and northwestern Mexico. A major structure facilitating collapse between 21 and 18 Ma was the Trans Mojave-Sierran shear zone (TMSSZ). This east-west shear zone linked the classic detachment fault terranes and metamorphic core complexes of the Mojave desert, southeastern California, southern Arizona, and Sonora, Mexico, to the transtensional plate boundary. To more fully understand the nature and kinematic significance of the TMSSZ and its role in facilitating early Miocene fragmentation of the North American plate, a palinspastic reconstruction of the Mojave desert was performed to remove the disruptive effects of the TMSSZ and younger tectonic events. Features formed just before movements along the TMSSZ were used as markers to assess the TMSSZ deformation. Our analysis indicates that TMSSZ deformation was distributed across a c. 90 km wide band; restoration of markers to their original positions implies that >80 km of dextral shear occurred along the TMSSZ. First-order dextral shear deformation within the TMSSZ is expressed internally by clockwise vertical axis rotations of large areas that were facilitated by second-order zones of sinistral shear that separated the blocks. These second-order sinistral zones apparently exploited older transfer zones of the 24-21 Ma Mojave Extensional Belt.
