Large-area synthesis of high-quality and uniform monolayer WS2 on reusable Au foils

Abstract Large-area monolayer WS 2 is a desirable material for applications in next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. However, the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) with rigid and inert substrates for large-area sample growth suffers from a non-uniform number of layers, small domain size and many defects, and is not compatible with the fabrication process of flexible devices. Here we report the self-limited catalytic surface growth of uniform monolayer WS 2 single crystals of millimetre size and large-area films by ambient-pressure CVD on Au. The weak interaction between the WS 2 and Au enables the intact transfer of the monolayers to arbitrary substrates using the electrochemical bubbling method without sacrificing Au. The WS 2 shows high crystal quality and optical and electrical properties comparable or superior to mechanically exfoliated samples. We also demonstrate the roll-to-roll/bubbling production of large-area flexible films of uniform monolayer, double-layer WS 2 and WS 2 /graphene heterostructures, and batch fabrication of large-area flexible monolayer WS 2 film transistor arrays.

Gradient tungsten-doped Bi3TiNbO9 ferroelectric photocatalysts with additional built-in electric field for efficient overall water splitting

Bi3TiNbO9, a layered ferroelectric photocatalyst, exhibits great potential for overall water splitting through efficient intralayer separation of photogenerated carriers motivated by a depolarization field along the in-plane a-axis. However, the poor interlayer transport of carriers along the out-of-plane c-axis, caused by the significant potential barrier between layers, leads to a high probability of carrier recombination and consequently results in low photocatalytic activity. Here, we have developed an efficient photocatalyst consisting of Bi3TiNbO9 nanosheets with a gradient tungsten (W) doping along the c-axis. This results in the generation of an additional electric field along the c-axis and simultaneously enhances the magnitude of depolarization field within the layers along the a-axis due to strengthened structural distortion. The combination of the built-in field along the c-axis and polarization along the a-axis can effectively facilitate the anisotropic migration of photogenerated electrons and holes to the basal {001} surface and lateral {110} surface of the nanosheets, respectively, enabling desirable spatial separation of carriers. Hence, the W-doped Bi3TiNbO9 ferroelectric photocatalyst with Rh/Cr2O3 cocatalyst achieves an efficient and durable overall water splitting feature, thereby providing an effective pathway for designing excellent layered ferroelectric photocatalysts.

Conductive porous vanadium nitride/graphene composite as chemical anchor of polysulfides for lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract Although the rechargeable lithium–sulfur battery is an advanced energy storage system, its practical implementation has been impeded by many issues, in particular the shuttle effect causing rapid capacity fade and low Coulombic efficiency. Herein, we report a conductive porous vanadium nitride nanoribbon/graphene composite accommodating the catholyte as the cathode of a lithium–sulfur battery. The vanadium nitride/graphene composite provides strong anchoring for polysulfides and fast polysulfide conversion. The anchoring effect of vanadium nitride is confirmed by experimental and theoretical results. Owing to the high conductivity of vanadium nitride, the composite cathode exhibits lower polarization and faster redox reaction kinetics than a reduced graphene oxide cathode, showing good rate and cycling performances. The initial capacity reaches 1,471 mAh g −1 and the capacity after 100 cycles is 1,252 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C, a loss of only 15%, offering a potential for use in high energy lithium–sulfur batteries.

CdPS ₃ nanosheets-based membrane with high proton conductivity enabled by Cd vacancies

Vacancies enhance proton conductivity Proton-exchange membranes (PEMs) allow for the transport of protons while acting as electrical insulators and ensuring that reactants are kept apart; therefore, they are a key component in devices such as low-temperature fuel cells. PEMs are typically made from polymers or materials embedded in a polymer matrix and need to operate in conditions of very high humidity. Starting with an inorganic, layered material, CdPS 3 , Qian et al. show that the removal of a small amount of cadmium introduces vacancies that greatly increase the proton conductivity of the PEMs (see the Perspective by Wang and He). The process works for manganese-based membranes as well, and high lithium ion transport was also observed. Science , this issue p. 596 ; see also p. 525

Edge-controlled growth and kinetics of single-crystal graphene domains by chemical vapor deposition

Significance Controlled synthesis of wafer-sized single crystalline high-quality graphene is a great challenge of graphene growth by chemical vapor deposition because of the complicated kinetics at edges that govern the growth process. Here we report the synthesis of single-crystal graphene domains with tunable edges from zigzag to armchair via a growth–etching–regrowth process. Both growth and etching of graphene are strongly dependent on the edge structure. This growth/etching behavior is well explained at the atomic level, given the concentrations of kinks on various edges, and allows control of graphene edges and morphology according to the classical kinetic Wulff construction theory. This work provides a deep understanding of the fundamental problems that limit graphene growth by chemical vapor deposition.
