Origin of agriculture and domestication of plants and animals linked to early Holocene climate amelioration

Domestication of plants and animals was necessary for the evolution of agriculture, spatial expansion and population increase of humans during the Holocene, which facilitated the evolution of technically innov ative societies. The agricultural practices enabled pe ople to establish permanent settlements and expand urbanbased societies. Domestication of plants and animals transformed the profession of the early humans from hunting and gathering to selective hunting, herding and settled agriculture. The earliest archaeological evidences, found throughout the tropical and subtropical areas of southwestern and southern Asia, northern and central Africa and Central America, suggest rapid and large-scale domestication of plants and animals ca. 10,000–7000 cal years BP. This interval corresponds to an intense humid phase and equable climates, as observed in numerous paleo records across the regions. I suggest that domestication of plants and animals and subsequent beginning of agr iculture were linked to cli mate amelioration in the early Holocene. CLIMATE has played a critical role in the evolution of fauna and flora. Proxy data suggest occurrence of wid espread repeated, abrupt climate changes throughout the geological record 1 . Persistent abrupt changes in climate may alter ecological landscape, le ading to faunal adaptation. Human adaptation and migration in response to s evere climate changes are known from the paleo records 2 . R ecent archaeological findings from Yana River, Siberia, ind icate that humans adapted to the harsh, frigid climate of the Arctic during the late Pleistocene about 27,000 year ago 3

We present multiproxy data spanning between ~25000 and 3500 calibrated years before the present (cal yr BP) from the eastern Arabian sea (EAS). This is possibly the first record of stable isotope record in pteropods from the EAS. Based on this dataset, we found that the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) was weak during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Moreover, upwelling intensity was high during the early Holocene, which was followed by a significant weakening of ISM during the 4.2 ka event.

Linkages Between East China Sea Deep‐Sea Oxygenation and Variability in the East Asian Summer Monsoon and Kuroshio Current Over the Last 400,000 years

Abstract The East China Sea (ECS) seasonally receives a high organic input due to the terrestrial organic matter influx, which is controlled by the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM), and the increased productivity driven by upwelling of the subsurface Kuroshio Current (KC). Changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblage composition in combination with paleoceanographic proxy data (CaCO 3 (%), TOC (%), δ 13 C pf , and δ 18 O bf ) are used to reconstruct bottom water oxygenation and organic export flux variability over the last 400 kyr in the ECS. Multivariate analyses of benthic foraminiferal census data identified six biofacies characteristic of varying environmental conditions. These results suggest that enhanced EASM precipitation and KC upwelling directly influenced organic export flux and bottom water oxygen content in the ECS. The ECS bottom water was suboxic during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 to 8; suboxic to dysoxic between MIS 7 and 6, strongly dysoxic between mid‐MIS 5 and 4, and exhibited high variability between MIS 3 and 1. Spectral analysis of relative abundances of representative genera Quinqueloculina (oxic), Bulimina (suboxic), and Globobulimina (dysoxic) reveals a robust 23 kyr signal, which we attribute to precessionally‐paced changes in surface productivity and bottom water oxygenation related to KC variability over the past 400 kyr.

Assessment of the Baspa basin glaciers mass budget using different remote sensing methods and modeling techniques

Glacial melt water is the key source for various socio-industrial and domestic activities in the Himalayas. Several recent studies suggest that glaciers are experiencing rapid melt. The glaciers health can be best assessed by mass balance. However, the mass balance investigations using in-situ methods for a large sample of glaciers are highly difficult in the Himalaya. Hence, remote sensing methods and modelling techniques are preferred. However, there is a lack of information on uncertainties associated with these methods in assessing the regional scale mass balance. Hence, these methods are applied to evaluate the regional scale mass budget of Baspa basin, Western Himalaya between 2000 and 2011. The total mass loss estimated using geodetic method amounts to −0.49 ± 0.1 gigatons, temperature index method to −0.43 ± 0.012 gigatons and AAR method to −0.36 ± 0.1 gigatons. Furthermore, this study highlights the limitations of these methods in mass loss evaluation in data scarce Himalayan regions.
