A Simple n-Dopant Derived from Diquat Boosts the Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells to 18.3%

Molecular doping has recently been shown to improve the operating characteristics of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Here, we prepare neutral Diquat (DQ) and use it as n-dopant to improve the performance of state-of-the-art OPVs. Adding DQ in ternary bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) cells based of PM6:Y6:PC71BM is found to consistently increase their power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 16.7 to 17.4%. Analyses of materials and devices reveal that DQ acts as n-type dopant and morphology modifier for the BHJ leading to observable changes in its surface topography. The resulting n-doped BHJs exhibit higher optical absorption coefficients, balanced ambipolar transport, longer carrier lifetimes and suppressed bimolecular recombination, which are ultimately responsible for the increased PCE. The use of DQ was successfully extended to OPVs based on PM6:BTP-eC9:PC71BM for which a maximum PCE of 18.3% (uncertified) was achieved. Our study highlights DQ as a promising dopant for application in next generation organic solar cells.

High‐Efficiency Perovskite–Organic Blend Light‐Emitting Diodes Featuring Self‐Assembled Monolayers as Hole‐Injecting Interlayers

Abstract The high photoluminescence efficiency, color purity, extended gamut, and solution processability make low‐dimensional hybrid perovskites attractive for light‐emitting diode (PeLED) applications. However, controlling the microstructure of these materials to improve the device performance remains challenging. Here, the development of highly efficient green PeLEDs based on blends of the quasi‐2D (q2D) perovskite, PEA 2 Cs 4 Pb 5 Br 16 , and the wide bandgap organic semiconductor 2,7 dioctyl[1] benzothieno[3,2‐b]benzothiophene (C 8 ‐BTBT) is reported. The presence of C 8 ‐BTBT enables the formation of single‐crystal‐like q2D PEA 2 Cs 4 Pb 5 Br 16 domains that are uniform and highly luminescent. Combining the PEA 2 Cs 4 Pb 5 Br 16 :C 8 ‐BTBT with self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) as hole‐injecting layers (HILs), yields green PeLEDs with greatly enhanced performance characteristics, including external quantum efficiency up to 18.6%, current efficiency up to 46.3 cd A −1 , the luminance of 45 276 cd m −2 , and improved operational stability compared to neat PeLEDs. The enhanced performance originates from multiple synergistic effects, including enhanced hole‐injection enabled by the SAM HILs, the single crystal‐like quality of the perovskite phase, and the reduced concentration of electronic defects. This work highlights perovskite:organic blends as promising systems for use in LEDs, while the use of SAM HILs creates new opportunities toward simpler and more stable PeLEDs.

Enhanced sub-1 eV detection in organic photodetectors through tuning polymer energetics and microstructure

One of the key challenges facing organic photodiodes (OPDs) is increasing the detection into the infrared region. Organic semiconductor polymers provide a platform for tuning the bandgap and optoelectronic response to go beyond the traditional 1000-nanometer benchmark. In this work, we present a near-infrared (NIR) polymer with absorption up to 1500 nanometers. The polymer-based OPD delivers a high specific detectivity D* of 1.03 × 1010 Jones (-2 volts) at 1200 nanometers and a dark current Jd of just 2.3 × 10-6 ampere per square centimeter at -2 volts. We demonstrate a strong improvement of all OPD metrics in the NIR region compared to previously reported NIR OPD due to the enhanced crystallinity and optimized energy alignment, which leads to reduced charge recombination. The high D* value in the 1100-to-1300-nanometer region is particularly promising for biosensing applications. We demonstrate the OPD as a pulse oximeter under NIR illumination, delivering heart rate and blood oxygen saturation readings in real time without signal amplification.
