Coupling Rock-Fracture Propagation with Thermal Stress and Fluid Flow

This paper describes the theory behind a recent extension of a two-dimensional (2D) boundary-element code, FRACOD, to enable simulations of either coupled fracture (F)-hydraulic (H) processes or coupled F-thermal stress (T) in rocks. This extension is the next step in the ongoing development of a three-dimensional (3D) fracture mechanics code that couples F-H-T processes and predicts fracture initiation and propagation under thermal and hydraulic loadings. The original FRACOD simulated both mode I (tensile) and mode II (shear) fracture propagation that only involved mechanical processes in rock masses. In this study, the F-T coupling in FRACOD was developed using an indirect boundary-element method based on fictitious heat sources. The F-H coupling in FRACOD focused on fluid flow in explicit rock fractures using a cubic law. An explicit iteration method is used to simulate the fluid flow process in fractures and its interaction with mechanical deformation. Several verification and application cases have been included in the paper that demonstrate the effectiveness of the coupled functions. The extended code has been applied to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) underground storage experiment in South Korea and the Äspö pillar stability experiment (APSE) pillar spalling experiment in Sweden, and these applications are reported elsewhere.

SCIAMACHY Level1 data: Calibration concept and in-flight calibration

Abstract. This paper discusses the basic concept of the calibration of the SCIAMACHY instrument and remaining open issues. SCIAMACHY is a scanning Limb/Nadir spectrometer covering the wavelength range from 212 nm to 2386 nm. It was launched on-board ENVISAT in February 2002. In general the instrument performance is excellent: It performs as tested on ground and there is only very minor degradation in time. The only exception is the unexpected formation of water ice on the infrared channels 7 and 8 that attenuates the signal and a light leak in channel 7. Both effects will be discussed. In the paper we will explain all individual calibration steps needed to come to a wavelength calibrated spectrum of the Earth reflectance. Open points in the calibrations and latest improvements, such as the new radiometric calibration will also be treated.

SCIAMACHY Limb Spectra

The space-borne spectrometer SCIAMACHY aboard ESA’s Envisat satellite has been observing the Earth’s atmospheric radiance since April 2002. The instrument is recording spectra which cover the ultra-violet, visible, and near infra-red spectral regions almost continuously. The measurements are performed in three different geometries. In this article, we show for the first time limb scattering spectra which cover SCIAMACHY’s entire spectral range. The atmospheric features are separated from the solar and instrumental features by a normalization procedure. Prominent features of all three types are discussed. 2004 COSPAR. CALIBRATION OF SCIAMACHY IN-FLIGHT MEASURED IRRADIANCES AND RADIANCES - FIRST RESULTS OF LEVEL 1 VALIDATION (CASIMIR, ENVISAT AOID 406)

SCIAMACHY is part of the payload of ESA’s new Environmental Satellite ENVISAT which was launched into a sunsynchronous polar orbit on 2002-02-28. As a prerequisite for high quality data products an in-flight radiometric and spectral calibration and validation of SCIAMACHY (ir)radiance measurements has to be performed. This paper covers part of the validation efforts during the first nine months of SCIAMACHY in orbit with special emphasis on the application of the internal light sources for radiometric and spectral calibration. Presented is the comparison of the solar irradiance spectrum contained in SCIAMACHY level 1b data products with a solar spectrum derived by R. L. Kurucz, solar irradiances measured by the UARS instruments SOLSTICE and SUSIM, and with the SCIAMACHY solar irradiance derived with independent implemented calibration routines.

SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT - 4 Years in Space

SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT has now successfully operated more than 4 years in space. The current in-flight performance of the instrument shows an excellent status with only a few minor in-flight non-conformances. A large volume of high quality scientific data has been acquired with results being retrieved covering many aspects of the changing Earth's atmosphere. In this paper a brief overview of SCIAMACHY is given with special emphasis on operations and performance aspects.

SCIAMACHY 4 Years in Orbit - Instrument Operations and In-flight Performance Status

SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT has now successfully operated 4 years in space. The ambitious scientific objectives required an operations concept which fully exploits the instrument flexibility but keeps the operational effort to an acceptable minimum. The concept, which had been developed in phase C/D, proved its capabilities in-flight and ensures that SCIAMACHY generates a continuous stream of high-quality scientific measurement data. The current in-flight performance of the instrument shows an excellent status with only a few minor in-flight non-conformances. From a technical point of view SCIAMACHY is well prepared for an extension of the mission.
