Spectroscopy of 74Ge: From soft to rigid triaxiality

The first heavy ion fusion–evaporation reaction study for 74Ge has been performed through the reaction channel Zn70(Li7,2np)Ge74 at beam energies of 30 and 35 MeV. Previously known yrast band is extended to higher spins and five new collective bands are established. Based on comparison with the neighboring 72,76Ge isotopes, an intermediate pattern of energy staggering S(I) is observed in the γ band of 74Ge. The collective structure of 74Ge, including the excitation energies and transition probabilities of ground-state band and γ band, is reproduced by the state-of-the-art five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) model constructed from the covariant density functional. By including the 72,76,78Ge isotopes, systematical investigation of the structure evolution in Ge isotopes is performed. Based on the systematic comparisons and analysis, the triaxial evolution with spin in 74Ge is revealed and 74Ge is found to be the crucial nucleus marking the triaxial evolution from soft to rigid in Ge isotopes.

Observation of a novel stapler band in 75 As

The heavy ion fusion–evaporation reaction study for the high-spin spectroscopy of 75As has been performed via the reaction channel 70Zn(9Be, 1p3n)75As at a beam energy of 42 MeV. The collective structure especially a dipole band in 75As is established for the first time. The properties of this dipole band are investigated in terms of the self-consistent tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory. Based on the theoretical description and the examination of the angular momentum components, this dipole band can be interpreted as a novel stapler band, where the valence neutrons in (1g9/2) orbital rather than the collective core are responsible for the closing of the stapler of angular momentum.

Symbolic Time-Series Analysis of Gas Turbine Gas Path Electrostatic Monitoring Data

The aero-engine gas-path electrostatic monitoring system is capable of providing early warning of impending gas-path component faults. In the presented work, a method is proposed to acquire signal sample under a specific operating condition for on-line fault detection. The symbolic time-series analysis (STSA) method is adopted for the analysis of signal sample. Advantages of the proposed method include its efficiency in numerical computations and being less sensitive to measurement noise, which is suitable for in situ engine health monitoring application. A case study is carried out on a data set acquired during a turbojet engine reliability test program. It is found that the proposed symbolic analysis techniques can be used to characterize the statistical patterns presented in the gas path electrostatic monitoring data (GPEMD) for different health conditions. The proposed anomaly measure, i.e., the relative entropy derived from the statistical patterns, is confirmed to be able to indicate the gas path components faults. Finally, the further research task and direction are discussed.

In-Service Reliability Assessment of Turbine Blade Thermal Barrier Coatings Based on a Novel Cumulative Damage Index Model

Abstract Thermal barrier coating (TBC) has been used widely on turbine blades to provide temperature and oxidation protection. With the turbine inlet temperature continuously increasing, TBCs have become more likely to oxide spallation, leading to premature failure of blade metal substrates. Thus, It is necessary to accurately evaluate the in-service reliability of TBCs for blade life assessment and engine operation safety. Nowadays, it is common to dynamically record aero-engine operating and performance data, called dynamic covariate data, which provides periodic snapshots for obtaining reliability information of engine components. Nevertheless, existing TBC life prediction models that pay adequate attention to dynamic covariate information are rare. This paper focuses on using limited failure samples with associated dynamic covariate data to make in-service reliability assessments of TBCs through a proposed cumulative damage index model. For the demonstration of the proposed approach, an integrated TBC life simulation approach has been introduced, which comprises engine performance, blade thermal, TBC damage, and damage accumulation models. The case study shows that the proposed cumulative damage index model-based method provides more stable and accurate results than the traditional statistical method based on failure-time data.
