Comprehensive bioinformatics analysis reveals novel potential biomarkers associated with aging and mitochondria in osteoporosis

Osteoporosis (OP) is a prevalent age-related bone metabolic disease. Aging and mitochondrial dysfunction are involved in the onset and progression of OP, but the specific mechanisms have not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to identify novel potential biomarkers associated with aging and mitochondria in OP. In this study, based on GEO database, aging-related and mitochondria-related differentially expressed genes (AR&MRDEGs) were screened. The AR&MRDEGs were enriched in mitochondrial structure and function. Then, 6 key genes were identified by WGCNA and multiple machine learning, and a novel diagnostic model was constructed. The efficacy of diagnostic model was validated using external datasets. The results showed that diagnostic model had favorable diagnostic prediction ability. Next, key gene regulatory networks were constructed and single-gene GSEA analysis was performed. In addition, based on a single-cell dataset from OP, single-cell differentially expressed genes (scDEGs) were identified. The results revealed that aging-related and mitochondria-related genes (AR&MRGs) were enriched in the ERK pathway in tissue stem cells (TSCs), and in mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization in monocytes. Cellular communication analysis showed that TSCs were active, with numerous signaling interactions with monocytes, macrophages and immune cells. Finally, the expression of key gene was verified by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). This study is expected to provide strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of OP targeting aging and mitochondria.

Achieving Synergies of Carbon Emission Reduction, Cost Savings, and Asset Investments in China’s Industrial Sector: Towards Sustainable Practices

This study aims to investigate the dynamic correlations among carbon emission reduction, total cost savings, and asset investments in the industrial sector in China. This study uses the panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) model and the generalized method of moments (GMM) model to obtain three conclusions based on Chinese industrial industry data from 2005–2019. (1) The interaction between carbon emission reduction and cost reduction is bidirectional. A carbon emission decrease can result in persistent cost cutting, while measures in shrinking costs lead to reducing carbon emissions with lasting effects. Moreover, carbon emission decline has strong inertia, while cost reduction is softer. (2) Green investment promotes reducing carbon emissions and is efficient and sustainable. Conversely, completing carbon reduction milestones will inhibit asset expansion in the subsequent period. (3) China’s industrial sector has already achieved the “synergy of emission reduction and cost decrease” development model. The transmission chain “asset investment–carbon emission decline–cost decrease–carbon emission abatement” has been established. Nonetheless, a gap remains between the mature cycle of decarbonization, cost saving, and effectiveness. Finally, it is recommended that the government focuses on the synergistic effect of carbon and cost reduction, encourages continuous green investment, and systematically organizes decarbonization actions. This study provides a basis for increasing the interest of companies in transitioning to a low-carbon economy, contributing to the simultaneous realization of green development and economic benefits.

Microwave Memristive-like Nonlinearity in a Dielectric Metamaterial

Memristor exhibit interesting and valuable circuit properties and have thus become the subject of increasing scientific interest. Scientists wonder if they can conceive a microwave memristor that behaves as a memristor operating with electromagnetic fields. Here, we report a microwave memristive-like nonlinear phenomenon at room temperature in dielectric metamaterials consisting of CaTiO3-ZrO2 ceramic dielectric cubes. Hysteretic transmission-incident field power loops (similar to the hysteretic I-V loop of memristor which is the fingerprint of memristor) with various characteristics were systematically observed in the metamaterials, which exhibited designable microwave memristive-like behavior. The effect is attributed to the decreasing permittivity of the dielectric cubes with the increasing temperature generated by the interaction between the electromagnetic waves and the dielectric cubes. This work demonstrates the feasibility of fabrication transient photonic memristor at microwave frequencies with metamaterials.

Microwave Bandpass Filter Based on Mie-Resonance Extraordinary Transmission

Microwave bandpass filter structure has been designed and fabricated by filling the periodically metallic apertures with dielectric particles. The microwave cannot transmit through the metallic subwavelength apertures. By filling the metallic apertures with dielectric particles, a transmission passband with insertion loss 2 dB appears at the frequency of 10-12 GHz. Both simulated and experimental results show that the passband is induced by the Mie resonance of the dielectric particles. In addition, the passband frequency can be tuned by the size and the permittivity of the dielectric particles. This approach is suitable to fabricate the microwave bandpass filters.

Porous VOxNy nanoribbons supported on CNTs as efficient and stable non-noble electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction

Abstract Novel nanocomposites of carbon nanotubes supported porous VO x N y nonoribbons (VO x N y -CNTs) have been synthesized by the annealing of the sol-gel mixture of CNTs and V 2 O 5 under NH 3 atmosphere as well as the ageing process in air. Besides the morphological and structural characterizations revealed by TEM, SEAD, EDS, XRD and XPS measurements, typical electrochemical tests including cyclic voltammetry (CV), rotating disk electrode (RDE) and chronoamperometry have been employed to determine the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance of VO x N y -CNTs. Inspiringly, the results indicate that VO x N y -CNTs catalyst exhibits a 0.4 mA/cm 2 larger diffusion-limited current density, a 0.10 V smaller onset potential value, a 10.73% less of ORR current decay and an excellent methanol-tolerance compared with commercial Pt/C catalyst. Therefore, we have reasonable grounds to believe that this new VO x N y -CNTs nanocomposites can be regarded as a promising non-precious methanol-tolerant ORR catalyst candidate for alkaline fuel cells.

Novel VN/C nanocomposites as methanol-tolerant oxygen reduction electrocatalyst in alkaline electrolyte

Abstract A novel VN/C nanostructure consisting of VN nanoparticles and graphite-dominant carbon layers is synthesized by nitridation of V 2 O 5 using melamine as reductant under inert atmosphere. High crystalline VN nanoparticles are observed to be uniformly distributed in carbon layers with an average size of ca 13.45 nm. Moreover, the electrocatalytic performance of VN/C towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline electrolyte is fascinating. The results show that VN/C has a considerable ORR activity, including a 75 percent value of the diffusion-limited current density and a 0.11 V smaller value about the onset potential with respect to Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the excellent methanol-tolerance performance of VN/C has also been verified with 3 M methanol. Combined with the competitive prices, this VN/C nanocomposite can serve as an appropriate non-precious methanol-tolerant ORR catalyst for alkaline fuel cells.

Tunable Dielectric Properties of Ferrite-Dielectric Based Metamaterial

A ferrite-dielectric metamaterial composed of dielectric and ferrite cuboids has been investigated by experiments and simulations. By interacting with the electromagnetic wave, the Mie resonance can take place in the dielectric cuboids and the ferromagnetic precession will appear in the ferrite cuboids. The magnetic field distributions show the electric Mie resonance of the dielectric cuboids can be influenced by the ferromagnetic precession of ferrite cuboids when a certain magnetic field is applied. The effective permittivity of the metamaterial can be tuned by modifying the applied magnetic field. A good agreement between experimental and simulated results is demonstrated, which confirms that these metamaterials can be used for tunable microwave devices.
