Efficient and simultaneous capture of iodine and methyl iodide achieved by a covalent organic framework

Radioactive molecular iodine (I2) and organic iodides, mainly methyl iodide (CH3I), coexist in the off-gas stream of nuclear power plants at low concentrations, whereas few adsorbents can effectively adsorb low-concentration I2 and CH3I simultaneously. Here we demonstrate that the I2 adsorption can occur on various adsorptive sites and be promoted through intermolecular interactions. The CH3I adsorption capacity is positively correlated with the content of strong binding sites but is unrelated to the textural properties of the adsorbent. These insights allow us to design a covalent organic framework to simultaneously capture I2 and CH3I at low concentrations. The developed material, COF-TAPT, combines high crystallinity, a large surface area, and abundant nucleophilic groups and exhibits a record-high static CH3I adsorption capacity (1.53 g·g-1 at 25 °C). In the dynamic mixed-gas adsorption with 150 ppm of I2 and 50 ppm of CH3I, COF-TAPT presents an excellent total iodine capture capacity (1.51 g·g-1), surpassing various benchmark adsorbents. This work deepens the understanding of I2/CH3I adsorption mechanisms, providing guidance for the development of novel adsorbents for related applications.

Strategies for high-temperature methyl iodide capture in azolate-based metal-organic frameworks

Abstract Efficiently capturing radioactive methyl iodide (CH 3 I), present at low concentrations in the high-temperature off-gas of nuclear facilities, poses a significant challenge. Here we present two strategies for CH 3 I adsorption at elevated temperatures using a unified azolate-based metal-organic framework, MFU-4 l . The primary strategy leverages counter anions in MFU-4 l as nucleophiles, engaging in metathesis reactions with CH 3 I. The results uncover a direct positive correlation between CH 3 I breakthrough uptakes and the nucleophilicity of the counter anions. Notably, the optimal variant featuring SCN - as the counter anion achieves a CH 3 I capacity of 0.41 g g −1 at 150 °C under 0.01 bar, surpassing all previously reported adsorbents evaluated under identical conditions. Moreover, this capacity can be easily restored through ion exchange. The secondary strategy incorporates coordinatively unsaturated Cu(I) sites into MFU-4 l , enabling non-dissociative chemisorption for CH 3 I at 150 °C. This modified adsorbent outperforms traditional materials and can be regenerated with polar organic solvents. Beyond achieving a high CH 3 I adsorption capacity, our study offers profound insights into CH 3 I capture strategies viable for practically relevant high-temperature scenarios.

Over 18% ternary polymer solar cells enabled by a terpolymer as the third component

"Ternary blending" and "random terpolymerization" strategies have both proven effective for enhancing the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, reports on the combination of the two strategies remain rare. Here, a terpolymer PM6-Si30 was constructed by inserting chlorine and alkylsilyl-substituted benzodithiophene (BDT) unit (0.3 equivalent) into the state-of-the-art polymer PM6. The terpolymer exhibitsadeep highest-occupied-molecular-orbital energy and good miscibility with both PM6 and BTP-eC9 (C9) and enables its use as a third component into PM6:PM6-Si30:C9 bulk-heterojunction for OSCs. The resulting cells exhibit maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.27%, which is higher than that obtained for the optimized control binary PM6:C9-based OSC (17.38%). The enhanced performance of the PM6:PM6-Si30:C9 cells is attributed to improved charge transport, favorable molecular arrangement, reduced energy loss and suppressed bimolecular recombination. The work demonstrates the potential of random terpolymer as a third component in OSCs and highlights a new strategy for the construction of a ternary system with improved photovoltaic performance.

Three-dimensional inhomogeneity of zeolite structure and composition revealed by electron ptychography

Structural and compositional inhomogeneity is common in zeolites and considerably affects their properties. Thickness-limited lateral resolution, lack of depth resolution, and electron dose-constrained focusing limit local structural studies of zeolites in conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We demonstrate that a multislice ptychography method based on four-dimensional scanning TEM (4D-STEM) data can overcome these limitations. Images obtained from a ~40-nanometer-thick MFI zeolite exhibited a lateral resolution of ~0.85 angstrom that enabled the identification of individual framework oxygen (O) atoms and the precise determination of the orientations of adsorbed molecules. Furthermore, a depth resolution of ~6.6 nanometers allowed probing of the three-dimensional distribution of O vacancies, as well as the phase boundaries in intergrown MFI and MEL zeolites. The 4D-STEM ptychography can be generally applied to other materials with similar high electron-beam sensitivity.

Engineering grain boundaries in monolayer molybdenum disulfide for efficient water-ion separation

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have long been considered as ideal platforms for developing separation membranes. However, it is difficult to generate uniform subnanometer pores over large areas on 2D materials. We report that the well-defined eight-membered ring (8-MR) pores, typically formed at the boundaries of two antiparallel grains of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), can serve as molecular sieves for efficient water-ion separation. The density of grain boundaries and, consequently, the number of 8-MR pores can be tuned by regulating the grain size. Optimized MoS 2 membranes outperformed the state-of-the-art membranes in forward osmosis tests by demonstrating both ultrahigh water/sodium chloride selectivity and exceptional water permeance. Creating precise pore structures on atomically thin films through grain boundary engineering presents a promising route for producing membranes suitable for various applications.

Ligand‐engineered Zr‐MOF membranes with fast water transport channels for alcohol–water separation

Abstract Metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes with rich functionality and a tunable pore system are promising for molecular separation. However, an inadequate pore microenvironment and low water stability may hamper the extension of their use in gas separation to liquid separation (e.g., organic solvent dehydration). In this study, we report a high‐valence Zr‐MOF membrane with high stability and tunable pore microenvironment, prepared using a mixed‐ligand strategy based on fumarate ( fum ) and 2‐methylfumarate ( mes ) ligands for the pervaporation dehydration of alcohols. The introduction of a methyl group in the ligand side chain narrowed the aperture size while balancing the hydrophilicity, thus facilitating the fast and selective permeation of water over alcohol molecules. The resulting mes/fum‐Zr‐MOF membrane with a mes content of 30% displayed excellent butanol/water separation performance with total flux of 5226 g −1 ·m −2 ·h −1 , separation factor of 1281, and water content of 99.3% in the permeate, transcending the upper‐bound of state‐of‐the‐art MOF and polymer membranes, thereby exhibiting immense potential for alcohols dehydration.
