Estimation of OSL trap parameters by optical “cleaning” — a critical study

The so-called thermal “cleaning” applied in thermoluminescence analysis allows distinguishing TL signal originating from different traps of comparable thermal depths. Here, the detailed study on the suitability of a similar approach — which can be called optical “cleaning” — for the analysis of OSL process has been carried out by means of computer modelling. The optical “cleaning” is realized by short optical stimulation applied directly after irradiation. It turns out that this approach does not help to separate signals related to various traps having similar optical cross-section (OCS) values. For some sets of trap parameters, sufficiently good reconstruction of the trap optical cross-sections can be achieved by the analysis of the conventional OSL curve obtained directly after sample irradiation, while the OSL curve analysis after “cleaning” does not provide any additional data. For other cases the analysis of both curves with and without “cleaning” leads to optical cross-section values different from those assumed in the model, but just in such situations the optical “cleaning” can be helpful. The differences between the OSL components of the conventional curve and the one obtained after “cleaning” can be used as indicators of an incompatibility of the trap parameters obtained from the OSL analysis with their actual values.

Thermal stability assessment of OSL signal by measuring the OSL thermal depletion curves

Metastable states called traps in minerals are responsible for the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) exploited in dating sediments and thermochronometry. The accuracy of trap parameters that determine the OSL thermal stability is crucial for the quality of results. A method of trap parameter determination used more and more often is the isothermal holding experiment. The problem that makes measurement results hard to interpret is the presence of other traps in the sample apart from the investigated one. Here, simulations of basic processes during isothermal holding experiments are made for a model including three traps. They prove that the irradiation dose and preheat impact the estimated trap parameters. In the presented results of experiments for quartz, which is a much more complex system than the considered model, one can recognize the characteristic effects observed in the simulations. The ways of recognizing the effects responsible for disturbances of results and improving measurements are indicated.

Determining the kinetic parameters of traps in quartz using the thermally modulated OSL method

The parameters of traps in quartz determine the thermal stability of OSL components and define the time range of dating. Their precise values are crucial for the thermal history of rock modelled in OSL thermochronometry. The values of trap parameters appearing in the literature depend on the quartz sample tested and the method used, even in the case of the most widely researched fast OSL component. Recently, it was found that it is possible to effectively separate the fast OSL component in quartz when the thermally modulated OSL (TM-OSL) method is conducted using a wavelength of 620 nm. Here, the possibility of fast component separation by the TM-OSL method for measuring OSL thermal depletion curves (OTDC) (isothermal OSL decay) and so-called TL difference curves (the TL signal bleached during the optical stimulation) is used. Trap parameters obtained independently in the OTDC experiments and by the IR and VHR methods applied to TL difference curves are compared. The parameter values stay in agreement in all methods used for three quartz samples from sediments of various origins. The new approach to measuring the OTDCs with the TM-OSL method enables the best precision. The mean value of trap parameters obtained in all methods and for all samples (E = 1.66 ± 0.02 eV, s = (4.1 ± 2.4) × 1013 s−1) is consistent with the literature data. TL difference curves are fitted with satisfactory quality by a first-order kinetics peak using the obtained trap parameters.

Residual Hole Concentration in Recombination Centres after Bleaching

Trapped charge dating method using electron spin resonance (ESR) of quartz is progressively used for sediment dating. ESR signals can be used for accurate age estimation only when these signals are zeroed by sunlight exposure before the layer creation or when one knows their ESR residual level (the part of the signal that is not bleached). It is well known that the ESR signal related to the Al-hole centres in quartz used for sediment dating has a significant residual signal. From the point of view of luminescence models, as a hole trap, the Al-hole centre is considered as a recombination centre in quartz. Recently, it was demonstrated experimentally that the ESR signal of the Al-hole centre is dependent on the total dose absorbed by the quartz sample in the past. The same effect was confirmed by simulations of the charge transport processes for a model including two recombination centres. Here, the dependence of residual hole concentration (RHC) in the recombination centres on the total dose absorbed by a sample in the past is studied in detail by computer simulations for a wide range of model parameters. The impact that the various relations of centre parameters have on the dependence of the residual as a function of dose is investigated and the implications for the dating practice are discussed.

Les sables de Fontainebleau: A Natural Quartz Reference Sample and its Characterisation

Fundamental studies on luminescence production in natural quartz require samples which can be studied by groups of laboratories using complementary methods. In the framework of a European collaboration studying quartz luminescence, a sample originating from the Fontainebleau Sandstone Formation in France was selected for characterisation and distribution to establish a starting point for interlaboratory work. Here we report on the preparation and characterisation work undertaken before distribution with the aim of ensuring that each laboratory received comparable material. Material was purified to enrich the quartz concentration, followed by mineralogical screening by SEM and ICP-MS analyses. Luminescence screening measurements were undertaken at a single laboratory (SUERC) to verify the suitability of the sample for use within the study, and to establish the level of homogeneity of subsamples prepared for distribution. The sample underwent minimal non-chemical pre-treatment by multiple cycles of magnetic separation and annealing. SEM analysis showed that the sample consists mainly of SiO2. The luminescence characterisation confirmed a dose sensitivity of ca. 22,000–160,000 cts K−1 Gy−1 per 260–290 grains for the 110◦C UV TL peak, well developed low (here: 100–300◦C) temperature (pre-dose) TL signals and high OSL sensitivities. The grain to grain OSL response varies by more than one order of magnitude. No significant IRSL signal was observed. In summary, the results from luminescence characterisation confirm the suitability of the sample for the luminescence experiments envisaged and have established a basis for comparability in studies conducted by a network of laboratories.

Further developments in luminescence dating, dosimetry and temperature-sensing require a deep understanding of luminescence processes and their driving parameters. Natural quartz is one of the most widely used minerals for these purposes. Still, poor reproducibility of results often hampers comparability and credibility from findings in the literature. We identified the lack of suitable natural reference samples as a pivotal problem impeding significant progression. Ideally, basic investigations involve several laboratories working on well-characterised reference quartz samples with different characteristics. Investigations should include multiple complementing methods to analyse luminescence properties and mineralogical and geochemical composition. Here, we present such a multi-technique luminescence comparison of two natural quartz samples. Next to the recently introduced Fontainebleau (FB) reference quartz, we propose another reference sample derived from the 'Silver Sands of Morar' (lab code 'MR'; Scotland, UK). Our experiments confirm that both quartz samples behave fundamentally different in terms of signal composition and sensitivity. The comparative characterisation of both samples targeted electron traps via thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques and luminescence centres via radioluminescence and time-resolved OSL spectrometry. In summary, we conclude that all observed differences are likely the results of divergent defect concentrations rather than variances in defects' composition (nature). The measurement data of our study are accessible open-access for inspection by others.
