Soft template-assisted synthesis of single crystalline β-cobalt hydroxide with distinct morphologies

In this work, a facile soft template-assisted water-bath method was adopted to synthesize pure phase single-crystalline β-cobalt hydroxide. Using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as soft templates, β-Co(OH)2 with hexagonal, disc-like and flower-like morphologies was successfully fabricated. It was found that all of the nanostructures exhibited preferentially oriented crystal growth along the (001) plane. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the soft templates had an important role in guiding the crystal growth and determining the final structure of β-Co(OH)2. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) measurements indicated that the flower-like structures had superior electrochemical properties over hexagonal and disc-like β-Co(OH)2. A four-step growth mechanism of β-Co(OH)2 was proposed based on time-dependent morphological evolution results. The results reveal the potentiality of soft templates in fine-tuning the morphology of single crystal β-Co(OH)2 nanomaterials.

Three-Dimensional Super-Resolution Morphology by Near-Field Assisted White-Light Interferometry

Recent developments in far-field fluorescent microscopy have enabled nanoscale imaging of biological entities by ingenious applications of fluorescent probes. For non-fluorescence applications, however, scanning probe microscopy still remains one of the most commonly used methods to "image" nanoscale features in all three dimensions, despite its limited throughput and invasiveness to scanned samples. Here, we propose a time-efficient three-dimensional super-resolution microscopy method: near-field assisted white light interferometry (NFWLI). This method takes advantage of topography acquisition using white-light interferometry and lateral near-field imaging via a microsphere superlens. The ability to discern structures in central processing units (CPUs) with minimum feature sizes of approximately 50 nm in the lateral dimensions and approximately 10 nm in the axial dimension within 25 s (40 times faster than atomic force microscopes) was demonstrated. We elaborate in this paper the principles of NFWLI and demonstrate its potential for becoming a practical method for high-speed and non-toxic three-dimensional nanoscale imaging.

Modulation of perovskite degradation with multiple-barrier for light-heat stable perovskite solar cells

The long-term stability of perovskite solar cells remains one of the most important challenges for the commercialization of this emerging photovoltaic technology. Here, we adopt a non-noble metal/metal oxide/polymer multiple-barrier to suppress the halide consumption and gaseous perovskite decomposition products release with the chemically inert bismuth electrode and Al2O3/parylene thin-film encapsulation, as well as the tightly closed system created by the multiple-barrier to jointly suppress the degradation of perovskite solar cells, allowing the corresponding decomposition reactions to reach benign equilibria. The resulting encapsulated formamidinium cesium-based perovskite solar cells with multiple-barrier maintain 90% of their initial efficiencies after continuous operation at 45 °C for 5200 h and 93% of their initial efficiency after continuous operation at 75 °C for 1000 h under 1 sun equivalent white-light LED illumination.

New compounds constructed from polyoxometalates and transition metal coordination complexes with lower positive charge

Five new hybrid compounds constructed from polyoxometalates and transition metal coordination complexes with lower positive charge: [PW11CuO39][Cu(bpy)2]5 (1), [BW12O40][Cu(bpy)2]5 (2) [BW12O40][Cu(Phen)2]3[Cu(Phen)(H2O)]2·2H2O (3), [SiW12O40][Cu(bpy)2]4 (4) and [PW12O40][Cu(bpy)2]4 (5) have been prepared and characterized by IR, UV-Vis, XPS, XRD and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The packing motif of the [Cu(bpy)2]+ copper coordination complexes in compound 1 exhibits square supramolecular channels running along the a axis, which are then filled by the [PW11CuO39]5− ions. Compound 2 is isomorphours with compound 1. Compound 3 contains a novel 2-D supramolecular layer structure constructed from [Cu(Phen)2]+ copper coordination complexes through π⋯π interactions. The packing motif of the [Cu(bpy)2]+ copper coordination complexes in compound 4 exhibits a supramolecular channel which is different from compound 1. Compound 5 is isomorphours with compound 4.

Mechanical strengthening of a perovskite–substrate heterointerface for highly stable solar cells

We show the mechanical strengthening of the buried interface in perovskite solar cells by using a cohesive macromolecular binder. Solar cells with a strengthened interface delivered a T97.5 lifespan of over 1600 h under 1-sun illumination at 55 °C.

Universal growth of perovskite thin monocrystals from high solute flux for sensitive self-driven X-ray detection

Abstract Metal-halide perovskite thin monocrystals featuring efficient carrier collection and transport capabilities are well suited for radiation detectors, yet their growth in a generic, well-controlled manner remains challenging. Here, we reveal that mass transfer is one major limiting factor during solution growth of perovskite thin monocrystals. A general approach is developed to overcome synthetic limitation by using a high solute flux system, in which mass diffusion coefficient is improved from 1.7×10 –10 to 5.4×10 –10 m 2 s –1 by suppressing monomer aggregation. The generality of this approach is validated by the synthesis of 29 types of perovskite thin monocrystals at 40–90 °C with the growth velocity up to 27.2 μm min –1 . The as-grown perovskite monocrystals deliver a high X-ray sensitivity of 1.74×10 5 µC Gy −1 cm −2 without applied bias. The findings regarding limited mass transfer and high-flux crystallization are crucial towards advancing the preparation and application of perovskite thin monocrystals.

Scanning superlens microscopy for non-invasive large field-of-view visible light nanoscale imaging

Abstract Nanoscale correlation of structural information acquisition with specific-molecule identification provides new insight for studying rare subcellular events. To achieve this correlation, scanning electron microscopy has been combined with super-resolution fluorescent microscopy, despite its destructivity when acquiring biological structure information. Here we propose time-efficient non-invasive microsphere-based scanning superlens microscopy that enables the large-area observation of live-cell morphology or sub-membrane structures with sub-diffraction-limited resolution and is demonstrated by observing biological and non-biological objects. This microscopy operates in both non-invasive and contact modes with ∼200 times the acquisition efficiency of atomic force microscopy, which is achieved by replacing the point of an atomic force microscope tip with an imaging area of microspheres and stitching the areas recorded during scanning, enabling sub-diffraction-limited resolution. Our method marks a possible path to non-invasive cell imaging and simultaneous tracking of specific molecules with nanoscale resolution, facilitating the study of subcellular events over a total cell period.

Rational design of high-quality 2D/3D perovskite heterostructure crystals for record-performance polarization-sensitive photodetection

Polarization-sensitive photodetection is central to optics applications and has been successfully demonstrated in photodetectors of two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as layered hybrid perovskites; however, achieving high polarization sensitivity in such a photodetector remains extremely challenging. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a high-performance polarization-sensitive photodetector using single-crystalline 2D/3D perovskite heterostructure, namely, (4-AMP)(MA)2Pb3Br10/MAPbBr3 (MA = methylammonium; 4-AMP = 4-(aminomethyl)piperidinium), which exhibits ultrahigh polarization sensitivity up to 17.6 under self-driven mode. To our knowledge, such a high polarization selectivity has surpassed all of the reported perovskite-based devices, and is comparable to, or even better than, the traditional inorganic heterostructure-based photodetectors. Further studies reveal that the built-in electric field formed at the junction can spatially separate the photogenerated electrons and holes, reducing their recombination rate and thus enhancing the performance for polarization-sensitive photodetection. This work provides a new source of polarization-sensitive materials and insights into designing novel optoelectronic devices.
