Constraining spatial variability in recharge and discharge in an arid environment through modeling carbon‐14 with improved boundary conditions

Abstract Carbon‐14 ( 14 C) has been widely used to estimate groundwater recharge rates in arid regions, and is increasingly being used as a tool to assist numerical model calibration. However, lack of knowledge on 14 C inputs to groundwater potentially limits its reliability for constraining spatial variability in recharge. In this study, we use direct measurements of 14 C in the unsaturated zone to develop a 14 C input map for a regional scale unconfined aquifer in the Ti Tree Basin in central Australia. The map is used as a boundary condition for a 3‐D groundwater flow and solute transport model for the basin. The model is calibrated to both groundwater 14 C activity and groundwater level, and calibration is achieved by varying recharge rates in 18 hydrogeological zones. We test the sensitivity of the calibration to both the 14 C boundary condition, and the number or recharge zones used. The calibrated recharge rates help resolve the conceptual model for the basin, and demonstrate that spatially distributed discharge (through evapotranspiration) is an important part of the water balance. This approach demonstrates the importance of boundary conditions for 14 C transport modeling ( 14 C input activity), for improving estimates of spatial variability in recharge and discharge.

World Karst Spring hydrograph (WoKaS) database is a compilation of karst spring discharge observations from across the globe. The database consist of over 400 spring discharge datasets which were collected from researchers, national hydrological databases and agencies in different countries and some of the datasets were digitized from published articles. The WoKaS database aims to serve as resourceful tool which will promotes large-scale karst hydrological studies, improves management, protection, process and comparative understanding of the karst aquifer systems.

Dynamics of component carbon fluxes in a semi‐arid Acacia woodland, central Australia

Vast areas in the interior of Australia are exposed to regular but infrequent periods of heavy rainfall, interspersed with long periods at high temperatures, but little is known of the carbon budget of these remote areas or how they respond to extreme precipitation. In this study, we applied three methods to partition net ecosystem photosynthesis into gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (R e ) during two years of contrasting rainfall. The first year was wet (>250 mm above average rainfall), while little precipitation fell during the second year (>100 mm below average). During the first year of study, rates of GPP were large (793 g C m −2 yr −1 ) in this semi‐arid Mulga ( Acacia aneura ) and grass savanna due to complementary photosynthetic responses by the canopy and C 4 understorey to cycles of heavy rainfall. Patterns in GPP during the summer and autumn matched those in leaf area index (LAI), photosynthetic activity, and autotrophic respiration. During the dry year, small but positive photosynthetic uptake by Mulga contributed to the neutral carbon budget (GPP / R e = 1.06 ± 0.03). Small rates of photosynthesis by evergreen Mulga when dry were supported by storage of soil moisture above a relatively shallow hardpan. Little soil organic matter (1.1%) was available to support heterotrophic respiration (R h ) without input of fresh substrate. The two largest sources of R e in this study were autotrophic respiration by the seasonal understorey and R h through decomposition of fresh organic matter supplied by the senescent understorey.
